Facility Planning and Design for Health, Physical Activity, Recreation, and Sport
by Thomas H. SawyerAs the cost of construction for sports and health related facilities skyrockets, it becomes paramount for those who plan, design, construct, and use these facilities to have access to a comprehensive facilities guide. The 14th edition of Facility Planning and Design for Health, Physical Activity, Recreation, and Sport is a tool for all professionals involved in facility planning and construction use. The 21st century is a time of increased interest in health, fitness, recreation, physical activity, and sport. A synopsis of the historical development of this text is important. In 1945, at the board of directors meeting of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD) in Washington, D.C., support was given to a proposal submitted by Caswell M. Miles, AAHPERD vice president for recreation, to prepare a grant to finance a national workshop on facilities. Subsequently, a request for $10,000 was submitted to and approved by Theodore P. Bank, president of the Athletic Institute, to finance the first workshop. The December 1946 workshop at Jackson s Mill, West Virginia, resulted in the publication of the premiere edition of the Guide for Planning Facilities for Athletics, Recreation, Physical and Health Education. The 1956 edition of the guide was a product of the second facilities workshop, held May 5-12, 1956, at the Kellogg Institute, and was held again January 15-24, 1965, at the Biddle Continuing Education Center, Indiana University in Bloomington. Two years later, April 29-May 8, 1967, another workshop was held at Indiana University. Among those invited were a number of outstanding college and technical personnel engaged in planning and administering programs of athletics, recreation, outdoor education, physical education, and health education. Other planning authorities and specialists receiving invitations included city planners, architects, landscape architects, engineers, and schoolhouse construction consultants. The 1974 guide was reconstructed in such a way that it would serve as a more practical tool for school administrators, physical education heads, architects, planning consultants, and all others interested in planning new areas and facilities or checking the adequacy of those already in use. The Athletic Institute and AAHPERD Council on Facilities, Equipment, and Supplies initiated the 1979 revision of the guide. A blue-ribbon steering committee was appointed by the Council. Edward Coates from Ohio State University and Richard B. Flynn from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, were appointed as co-editors and contributing authors. Professionals well known for their expertise in facility planning, design, and construction were invited to assist in a complete re-write, which resulted in Planning Facilities for Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation.

Facing It: AIDS Diaries and the Death of the Author
by Ross ChambersFor a generation or more, literary theorists have used the metaphor of "the death of the author" in considering the observation that to write is to abdicate control over the meanings one's text is capable of generating. But in the case of AIDS diaries, the metaphor can be literal. Facing Itexamines the genre not in classificatory terms but pragmatically, as the site of a social interaction. Through a detailed study of three such diaries, originating respectively in France, the United States, and Australia, Ross Chambers demonstrates that issues concerning the politics of AIDS writing and the ethics of reading are linked by a common concern with the problematics of survivorhood. Two of the diaries chosen for special attention in this light are video diaries:La Pudeur ou l'impudeurby Herv Guibert (author ofTo the Friend Who Did Not Save My Life), andSilverlake Life, by the American videomaker Tom Joslin (aided by his lover and friends, notably Peter Friedman). The third is a defiant but anxious text,Unbecoming, by an American anthropologist, Eric Michaels, who died in Brisbane, Australia, in 1988. Other authors more briefly examined include Pascal de Duve, Bertrand Duqu nelle, Alain Emmanuel Dreuilhe, David Wojnarowicz, Gary Fisher, and the filmmaker (not a diarist) Laurie Lynd. Finally, Facing It takes on the issue of its own relevance, asking what contributions literary criticism can make in the midst of an epidemic. "Groundbreaking in its approach and potentially wide in its appeal. . . . The rigor of the ideas, their dramatic nature, and the political drive of the rhetoric all should win Facing It a large readership that could extend far beyond students of narrative or queer theory. " --David Bergman, Towson University, editor ofCamp Grounds: Style and Homosexuality Ross Chambers is Distinguished University Professor of French and Comparative Literature, University of Michigan, and author ofRoom for Maneuver: Reading (the) Oppositional (in) NarrativeandStory and Situation: Narrative Seduction and the Power of Fiction.

Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers: The Truth Behind the Misinformation, Distortion, and Derision by Debunkers, Government Agencies, and Conspiracy Conmen
by Stanton T. Friedman Kathleen Marden“An excellent, in-depth book that gets to the heart of how, and why, the UFO subject has been smeared, ridiculed, and targeted by disinformation agents.” —Nick Redfern, author of Men in BlackThere is a clear conspiracy to deny the existence of UFOs.The mainstream media has misinformed us for years about UFO studies conducted by highly regarded scientists associated with some of the finest universities in the country. There is significant evidence that the US government has covered up the alien presence through misinformation, distortion, obfuscation, and ridicule. Some prominent, politically connected scientists have engaged in the cover up. And a few professional writers have helped to successfully label any scientists who have been persuaded by the evidence and brave enough to take a stand as unscientific charlatans, fanatics, and kooks.Fact, Fiction, and Flying Saucers examines the wealth of archival documents that clearly demonstrate this cooperative disinformation effort and refute the false claims made by these professional scoffers. Friedman and Marden set the record straight by examining politically motivated misinformation and presenting the compelling evidence that separates fact from fiction. They reveal:The most compelling UFO evidence, including a variety of large-scale scientific studies. The current state of UFOlogy and what the future holds. The media’s role in disclosure and denial. The government scientists whose job it is to deny. The Air Force, FBI, CIA, and NSA’s involvement.
