by Andrew Harvey Karuna Erickson Rodney Yee***WINNER, 2010 Spirituality & Practice Best Spiritual Book Award - YogaIn Heart Yoga, renowned spiritual writer and Sacred Activist Andrew Harvey and longtime yoga teacher Karuna Erickson present a vision of hatha yoga practice that links ancient spiritual traditions to contemporary life. Including excerpts of poetic sacred writing from mystical sages through the ages, the book reminds readers that the purpose of yoga is not to improve one's physical health or even to achieve peace of mind (although these results may be achieved along the way), but to reach a state of unity with the divine, the goal of mystics from all traditions. With detailed descriptions and photographs of fifty yoga poses and their alchemical effects on the body and consciousness, Heart Yoga presents yoga as a simple meditative practice that enables the practitioner to dwell in the heart and experience the bliss of union with the sacred power underlying all of life. The book explains how to prepare for Heart Yoga and describes the "Five Great Joys" that are part of the path. Included are the authors' own compelling stories of their individual journeys along the path of yoga: stories of suffering, transcendence, and joy that both inspire and enlighten. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Heart of Tarot: An Intuitive Approach
by Amber K Azrael Arynn KYour mind has an infinite capacity to make connections and to find meanings in disconnected facts or abstract symbols. Gestalt Tarot strips the cards of their traditional meanings, then asks you to find your own meanings in the cards. Thus, Gestalt Tarot allows you to find the symbols, fields of meaning, or patterns that easily represent significant factors in your own life or thought patterns. In all these ways, Gestalt Tarot is in harmony with the basic tenets of humanistic psychology. It honors human creativity and choices by offering a mutable view of the future, not a glimpse of an unalterable fate. It defines meaning as that which is significant to you, no matter whether it is sense or nonsense to another. And it values the dignity and strength of the individual by empowering you to explore, understand, and guide your own life.

Hearts of Wisdom: American Women Caring for Kin, 1850-1940
by Emily K. AbelDrawing upon a wealth of diaries, letters, and case records from hospitals and social service agencies, the author examines the shifting roles of caregivers between 1850 and 1940. In addition to the diaries and letters of literate white woman, she turns to slave narratives from the antebellum south and records from health-care agencies serving American Indians during the first part of the 20th century. Abel shows that women in the 19th century gained self-esteem and status through their knowledge of home remedies and nursing techniques. The medical profession gained strength with the discovery of microbes and the development of medications to treat specific diseases. During the 20th century professionals discredited women who provided health care at home. One chapter discusses mothers of children with epilepsy or mental retardation, who were pressured to place their children in institutions and to sever emotional ties with them. Another chapter explores the shift from American sign language to oralism in the education of deaf children, and the impact this had upon mothers. Abel concludes by looking briefly at the current trend to return more and more caregiving to the home.
