Horóscopo chino 2023

by Ángeles Lasso

Hospital Time

by Amy Hoffman

Hospital Time is a memoir about friendship, family, and caregiving in the age of AIDS. Amy Hoffman, a writer, lesbian activist, and former editor of Gay Community News, chronicles with fury and unflinching honesty her experience serving as primary caretaker for her friend and colleague, Mike Riegle, who died from AIDS-related complications in 1992. Hoffman neither idealizes nor deifies Riegle, whom she portrays as a brilliant man, devoted prison rights activist, and very difficult friend. Hoffman became central to Riegle's caregiving when he asked her to be his health-care proxy, and although she willingly chose to do this, she explores her conflicting feelings about herself in this role and about her involvement with Riegle and his grueling struggle with hospitalization, illness, and, finally, death. She tells of the waves of grief that echoed throughout her life, awakening memories of other losses, entering her dreams and fantasies, and altering her relationships with friends, family, and even total strangers. Hoffman's memoir gives voice to the psychological and emotional havoc AIDS creates for those in the difficult role of caring for the terminally ill and it gives recognition to the role that lesbians continue to play in the AIDS emergency. A foreword by Urvashi Vaid, former executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, offers a meditation on the politics of AIDS and the role of family in the lives of lesbians and gay men.

This new diet is especially hard on Victorine, who temporarily abandons her vegetarianism. It's not until they meet a couple running an organic farm in upstate New York that they realize how far they've strayed from their native food values--and learn that you can eat well in America, too.

Hot Topics, Cool Heads: A Handbook for Civil Dialogue

by John Genette Jennifer A Linde Clark D. Olson

There is a crying need for civility in our world. From families disagreeing at Thanksgiving tables to the halls of Congress, civility is in short supply. Most people can easily point to daily examples of incivility, but most people are unable to define “civility” or recognize what it looks like, much less practice it. Hot Topics, Cool Heads: A Handbook for Civil Dialogue, written by the founders of the Institute for Civil Dialogue, traces the lack of civility in our society, defines what it is from a communication perspective, then identifies the characteristics of a civil communicator and outlines the importance of civil listening. It then introduces the format of Civil Dialogue®, a method for people to present many sides of hotly contested issues. Through spontaneously participating in an audienced dialogue, participants are led through a facilitated conversation by taking a position on a provocative statement. Civil Dialogue features a semi-circle, where people who strongly agree and strongly disagree must face one another, while those who somewhat agree and somewhat disagree sit next to them, with a neutral or undecided participant completing the semi-circle. A trained facilitator opens the dialogue by asking for brief opening statements, then allowing the participants to freely discuss their thoughts and feelings while following certain “rules of civility.” The audience is then asked for comments and questions before participants give closing statements, followed by a summary of the entire dialogue by the facilitator. By modeling civility, participants learn to understand different perspectives as they give voice to their positions. These skills of a civil communicator can be used in conversations where people vehemently disagree with one another, without the goal of advocacy, but to enhance understanding. Through this understanding comes a greater foundation for democracy. Civil Dialogue can be used in a variety of contexts, so people need not fear having conversations about politics, religion, or sex. The necessary fundamentals of Civil Dialogue are included in the appendices.

Hotel Ritz - Comparing Mexican and U.S. Street Prostitutes: Factors in HIV/AIDS Transmission

by R Dennis Shelby David J Bellis

Explore ways to reduce the rate of HIV infection in street prostitutes--and the inescapable connection between the heroin trade, prostitution, and HIV!This unique book draws on face-to-face interviews that the author conducted on the streets, with heroin-addicted street prostitutes in Southern California and their counterparts in four large Mexican cities. Author David James Bellis illustrates the significant--and surprising--differences in the risk of exposure to HIV and other STDs that exist between street prostitutes in the two countries arising from national differences in the legality, sociology, and economics of sex work. He points out that Mexican prostitutes, for whom sex work is a simple means of livelihood, are “choir girls” compared with their beaten-up, drug-addicted sisters north of the border who perform sex for drug money and are at much greater risk of HIV and other diseases, like Hepatitis C. This book explores those differences, suggesting new directions for United States prostitution and heroin-control policies--laws currently so interwoven that they reinforce each other, accounting for a deadly circle of crime and disease. In addition to the fascinating results of the author's interviews with 72 female street prostitutes in San Bernardino, California, and 102 more in Tijuana, Cd. Juárez, Cd. Victória, and Cuernavaca regarding their personal sexual, drug, and health practices, and their criminal histories, Hotel Ritz-Comparing Mexican and U.S. Street Prostitutes: Factors in HIV/AIDS Transmission explores: the licensing process for legal prostitutes in Mexico the medical testing that Mexico requires prostitutes to undergo the differences in what United States and Mexican prostitutes know about HIV transmission the difference in condom use between United States and Mexican prostitutes the potential benefits of reforming prostitution and drug laws in both countries the benefits of making methadone maintenence and syringes-and heroin-free for heroin-addicted prostitutes the proportion of United States/Mexican prostitutes who would quit the trade if they learned they had AIDS how the social support system in the United States (housing subsidies, TANF/AFDC money, food stamps, etc.) leads to a greater proportion of drug-addicted prostitutes than are found in Mexico Hotel Ritz-Comparing Mexican and U.S. Street Prostitutes: Factors in HIV/AIDS Transmission also provides you with a look at the hierarchy of female sex workers, an explanation of the etiology of AIDS transmission, and a concise history of heroin and prostitution. Helpful tables and an appendix containing the author's survey questions make the data in this well-referenced book easily understandable.
