Isto ocorre porque o colesterol é uma substância gordurosa que pode aderir às paredes das artérias, acumular-se e causar obstrução. Isto significa que o coração precisa de bombear com mais força para enviar oxigénio e nutrientes suficientes para onde eles são necessários. Isto provoca um aumento na pressão sanguínea, que frequentemente conduz a doenças cardíacas, o que, por sua vez, leva a ataques cardíacos e AVC.
