RAISING RACE CONSCIOUSNESS: Healing Racism, Sexism and Other Isms
by Audrye ArbeWhat propelled me to write this book? In addition to being nudged by Spirit and my own Inner Guidance, I took a look around. What is this fixation on race, sex, gender, religion, class that preoccupies so many of our species? Where is our plentiful joy and wonder at the magnificence of Creation? More importantly, what can we do about any lack of wonder? Who are we, anyway, and why are we here? Personally, I am fascinated by the diversity and combinations in which we humans flourish — with our multitude of talents, looks and abilities. I love our creativity, our amazingly diverse yet similar energies and vibrations. To me, this variety is something to be honored and treasured, a reflection of the artistry and abundance of Creation. Despite the beauty that exists within diversity – racial, sexual, gender, and so on -- some of us appear to feel, believe and act as if our variety is an issue, going so far as to behave inimically toward others who outwardly "look or seem different.” From where do these attitudes stem and where do these perceptions lead? Is separation along color/sex/gender/religious lines what an-yone truly desires in the core of his/her being? It is indicative of a culture with distorted ideas about race that people can even figure out what looking alike and looking different mean. How are these differences of coloration interpreted? In a culture that loved our multiplicity of being, we would have a different conception of alike and different, as well as different feelings and vibrations within ourselves. We are in a new millennium. We have the time-space-place-resonance to be the enlightened beings that we are. The choice is open to each and every one of us.
RAPilates: Body And Mind Conditioning In The Digital Age
by Chuck D Kathy LopezHip-hop icon Chuck D presents a gorgeously illustrated Pilates exercise program for people of all ages, including the over-forty crowd LEGENDARY HIP-HOP ARTIST CHUCK D has been touring the world for four decades, since his band Public Enemy put out their first album in 1987. Now, at age sixty-three, Chuck is frequently asked how he still manages to put on such high-energy performances so many years later. His response is simple: he practices Pilates, a form of exercise and body conditioning that has become increasingly popular over the last decade. Chuck’s appreciation for Pilates took a major leap in 2016 when he was setting out on a rigorous tour schedule with a powerful and energetic new band called Prophets of Rage (a supergroup including members of Public Enemy and Rage Against the Machine). Over the next four years, the group would perform to more than two million people across the globe. As Chuck admits, he simply could not have delivered on such a massive level without his practice of Pilates. In this volume, Chuck and his Pilates guru, Kathy Lopez, present the “RAPilates” program of more than thirty mat-based exercises for people of all ages and experiences. The exercises are beautifully illustrated in the inimitable style that Chuck has demonstrated in his previous books of visual art, including STEWdio and Summer of Hamn. Like those two books, RAPilates is published on Chuck’s Enemy Books imprint, which is hosted by Akashic Books.
REACH and the Environmental Regulation of Nanotechnology: Preventing and Reducing the Environmental Impacts of Nanomaterials (Routledge Studies in Environment and Health)
by Nertila KurajREACH and the Environmental Regulation of Nanotechnology presents a thorough and comprehensive legal analysis on the status of nanoscale chemicals under the EU’s REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation, and Restriction) regulation, asking whether it effectively safeguards human health and environmental protection. This book examines the European Commission’s claim that REACH offers the best possible framework for the risk management of nanomaterials. Through a detailed and meticulous analysis of the four phases of REACH, Kuraj assesses the capacity of the Regulation to protect human health and the environment against the potential harms associated with exposure to nanomaterials, and draws attention to the ways in which the specificities of nanoscale chemicals are (not) tackled by the current REACH framework. Overall, this book is an innovative and timely contribution to the ongoing debate on how to best address the unprecedented risks posed by the growing pursuit of nanotechnological innovation by the EU and global policy agenda. REACH and the Environmental Regulation of Nanotechnology will be of great interest to advanced students and scholars of environmental law and policy, environmental governance, science and technology studies, and environment and health.

Rabies in the Streets: Interspecies Camaraderie in Urban India (Animalibus #16)
by Deborah NadalFound in two-thirds of the world, rabies is a devastating infectious disease with a 99.9 percent case-fatality rate and no cure once clinical signs appear. Rabies in the Streets tells the compelling story of the relationship between people, street animals, and rabies in India, where one-third of human rabies deaths occur. Deborah Nadal argues that only a One Health approach of “interspecies camaraderie” can save people and animals from the horrors of rabies and almost certain death.Grounded in multispecies ethnography, this book leads the reader through the streets and slums of Delhi and Jaipur, where people and animals, such as dogs, cows, and macaques, interact intimately and sometimes violently. Nadal explores the intricate web of factors that bring humans and animals into contact with one another within these urban spaces and create favorable pathways for the transmission of the rabies virus across species. This book shows how rabies is endemic in India for reasons that are as much social, cultural, and political as they are biological, ranging from inadequate sanitation to religious customs, from vaccine shortages to reliance on traditional medicine. The continuous emergence (and reemergence) of infectious diseases despite technical medical progress is a growing concern of our times and clearly questions the way we think of animal and environmental health. This original account of rabies challenges conventional approaches of separation and extermination, arguing instead that a One Health approach is our best chance at fostering mutual survival in a world increasingly overpopulated by humans, animals, and deadly pathogens.

Race Against Time: Searching for Hope in AIDS-Ravaged Africa (The CBC Massey Lectures)
by Stephen Lewis"I have spent the last four years watching people die." With these wrenching words, diplomat and humanitarian Stephen Lewis opens his 2005 CBC Massey Lectures. Lewis's determination to bear witness to the desperate plight of so many in Africa and elsewhere is balanced by his unique, personal, and often searing insider's perspective on our ongoing failure to help. Lewis recounts how, in 2000, the United Nations Millennium Summit in New York introduced eight Millennium Development Goals, which focused on fundamental issues such as education, health, and cutting poverty in half by 2015. In audacious prose, alive with anecdotes ranging from maddening to hilarious to heartbreaking, Lewis shows why and how the international community is falling desperately short of these goals. This edition includes an afterword by Lewis, covering events after the lectures were delivered in fall 2005.
