Sit Up Straight: Futureproof Your Body Against Chronic Pain with 12 Simple Movements

by Vinh Pham

Futureproof your body and relieve chronic pain resulting from sitting, slouching, and other bad lifestyle habits with this easy-to-perform set of daily stretching and exercise routines - from an innovative physical therapist who coaches dozens of celebrity clients. What if we could easily acquire long-lasting protection for our bodies and escape the chronic pain caused by our sit-all-the-time, slouch-too-much lifestyles?Vinh Pham is a world-class physical therapist - a member of a new breed that dissects how people really move. He has worked with a broad range of clients, from Olympians to NBA stars to Mixed martial arts-fighters to Golden Globe and Grammy Award-winning artists. Early in his career, he discovered a disappointing truth: most of his patients came to him already in pain. They had poor, deeply ingrained lifestyle habits that misaligned their joints and tightened their muscles. And the recent epidemic of prolonged sitting - which represents an all-day assault on the body - has only made things worse. If you're sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time without getting up, you may be heading toward a world of hurt.Vinh's answer to the host of muscle maladies that ails us has been a revolutionary concept: why not future proof? Instead of reacting to chronic pain after it flares up, what if we focused on a movement discipline that not only prevents injuries but leads to longer lives, healthier bodies, and a clearer mind?Sit Up Straight outlines a process that starts with a daily posture hygiene regimen. Performed correctly, these exercises will lock in protection for the rest of the day. But Vinh goes further. He provides stretching and exercise routines for many of the specific ailments that affect us - from hamstring pulls to sciatica to rotator cuff problems - and, best of all, he offers a series of customised movements based on age, gender and the kind of work we perform.A precise and simple toolkit for tweaking the way we move (or refuse to move), Sit Up Straight shows that the solution to becoming pain-free is easier than we think.

Sit, Walk, Don't Talk: How I Survived a Silent Meditation Retreat

by Jennifer Howd

Jennifer Howd had been building a mindfulness practice for a few years before taking on the challenge of her first nine-day silent meditation retreat. In this debut memoir, she chronicles the humorous--and often harrowing--adventures of the dueling inner voices that emerge in the silence: one intent on focusing on the seemingly negative aspects of her experiences, and the other on helping her see the positivity that can come from them.Illuminating for those who are new to mindfulness and resonant for those with established practices, Sit, Walk, Don’t Talk: How I Survived a Silent Meditation Retreat also includes a helpful appendix listing tips for preparing for a silent meditation retreat, including a section for undertaking a retreat on your own.Sit, Walk, Don't Talk is written from a secular perspective and will appeal to folks who've never attended a residential retreat but are curious about the experience and want to get a taste of what to expect before possibly taking the plunge. Practitioners who dream of going on retreat but cannot make the time will also get a lot out of Howd's story, as well as folks who've been on many retreats and want to recapture the feeling without leaving home.

Situated Cognition Research: Methodological Foundations (Studies in Brain and Mind #23)

by Mark-Oliver Casper Giuseppe Flavio Artese

This volume assembles supporters and critics of situated cognition research to evaluate the intricacies, prerequisites, possibilities, and scope of a 4E methodology. The contributions are divided into three categories. The first category entails papers dealing with a 4E methodology from the perspective of epistemology and philosophy of science. It discusses whether to support explanatory pluralism or explanatory unification and focuses on possible compromises between ecological psychology and enactivism. The second category addresses ontological questions regarding the synchronic and diachronic constitution of cognitive phenomena, the localization of cognitive processes, and the theoretical issue of mutual manipulability. The third category analyzes how the theoretical and practical commitments of 4E approaches lead to empirically supported investigations of different phenomena, such as research on affordances and (chronic) pain. The book renews attention to the possible adverse consequences coming along with methodical fragmentation, as found among 4E positions. It provides an overdue first step towards a systematic and positive answer to methodological concerns in situated cognition research. Without this and further steps in the future, the growth of 4E´s significance for the scientific study of the mind might stall or even decrease. With such steps, situated cognition research could realize its frequently highlighted but so far not comprehensively accessed potential to change radically the modalities of how cognitive phenomena are studied. This volume is of interest to scholars of the philosophy of mind.

The Six Healing Sounds: Taoist Techniques for Balancing Chi

by Mantak Chia

The Six Healing Sounds that keep the vital organs in optimal condition • Presents vocalizations and accompanying postures that dissolve the tensions at the root of unhealthy chi flow and organ malfunction • Shows how to release excess heat trapped around the organs and redistribute it to cooler regions of the body to bring balance, health, and calmness to the entire system Thousands of years ago Taoist masters discovered that a healthy organ vibrates at a particular frequency. They found six sounds with the correct frequencies to keep each organ in optimal condition. To accompany these Six Healing Sounds, six postures were developed to activate the acupuncture meridians, or energy channels, of the corresponding organs. In The Six Healing Sounds Master Mantak Chia explains how the pressures of modern life can cause excess heat to become trapped around the organs, causing energy blockages and sickness. He shows readers how the vibrations of the Six Healing Sounds and their accompanying postures redistribute this excess heat to the cooler regions of the body, thereby stimulating and balancing chi energy and restoring the vital organs. Regular practice of the Six Healing Sounds promotes optimal health for the organs, increased sexual pleasure, emotional balance, and the prevention of illness.

by Vinod Verma

Dr. Verma's advice for a stress-free work environment begins with a daily yoga program-easy exercises that take a total of sixteen minutes a day! She shows you how to recognize the three basic Ayurvedic types so you can "read" the people you work with. Do you have a project that requires long-term careful attention? Give it to a kapha constitution and assign the tight deadlines to the person with a vatta or pitta constitution. The pitta type tends to overreact-but do you appreciate the initiative and abundant creative energy this person offers? Can you accept the various types-including yourself? Dr. Verma describes them so you can work better as part of a team. You will also learn how to balance your type with various foods and spices. This is not a diet book-instead, Dr. Verma offers a way to balance your energy so you get the most out of yourself that you can. Basic Ayurvedic information brings a whole new approach to food, for spices and food choices can help rebalance energy when you have pushed yourself too far, as we all sometimes do. Dr. Verma is practical. She teaches in Europe and all over India-her books have been translated into many languages, and she has a wealth of experience with balancing the demands of a busy schedule and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The 5000-year-old-system that she teaches has worked for her and countless others. Why don't you give it a try? If you are a take-charge kind of person-whether you work at home, in an office, or on a freelance basis-you'll get something from reading this book!
