The Krebiozen Hoax: How a Mysterious Cancer Drug Shook Organized Medicine
by Matthew C. EhrlichThe brainchild of an obscure Yugoslav physician, Krebiozen emerged in 1951 as an alleged cancer treatment. Andrew Ivy, a University of Illinois vice president and a famed physiologist dubbed “the conscience of U.S. science,” wholeheartedly embraced Krebiozen. Ivy’s impeccable credentials and reputation made the treatment seem like another midcentury medical miracle. But after years of controversy, the improbable saga ended with Krebiozen proved a sham, its inventor fleeing the country, and Ivy’s reputation and legacy in ruins. Matthew C. Ehrlich’s history of Krebiozen tells a quintessential story of quackery. Though most experts dismissed the treatment, it found passionate public support not only among cancer patients but also people in good health. The treatment’s rise and fall took place against the backdrop of America’s never-ending suspicion of educational, scientific, and medical expertise. In addition, Ehrlich examines why people readily believe misinformation and struggle to maintain hope in the face of grave threats to well-being. A dramatic account of fraud and misplaced trust, The Krebiozen Hoax shines a light on a forgotten medical scandal and its all-too-familiar relevance in the twenty-first century.

The Kybalion
by Atkinson William Walker writing as Three Initiates Philip DeslippeHere is the flagship edition of the most popular occult work of the past century, now published with a groundbreaking historical introduction that establishes its authentic authorship and a "lost" bonus work by the original author. It is one of the most mysterious and hotly debated occult works ever written-and without question the most popular and widely influential book of arcane philosophy of the twentieth century: The Kybalion has been credited only to the cryptic "Three Initiates" since its first appearance in 1908. Debate rages over the identity of the Three Initiates, the origin of the book's mysterious title and insights, and the nature of the Hermetic teachings on which it is thought to be based. Now the veil is parted. The Kybalion: The Definitive Edition presents the first full- scale analysis of this work of practical occult wisdom. It features the complete text of The Kybalion and the first-ever publication of Atkinson's previously unknown post-Kybalion work: The Seven Cosmic Laws. In an engaging introduction to this unique volume, religious scholar Philip Deslippe surveys the work's context, history, and impact (including as a source of spiritual insight to communities ranging from New Thought to Black Nationalism), and provides a biographical sketch of its elusive author, the New Thought pioneer William Walker Atkinson. As valuable to new fans as it is to longtime readers who crave more knowledge about Atkinson and his work, The Kybalion: The Definitive Edition illuminates the remarkable history of this long-cherished text. .
The Kybalion
by Three InitiatesSome confusion has arisen in the minds of persons considering this Principle, from the fact that they were unable to explain how one thing could cause another thing-= that is, be the "creator" of the second thing. As a matter of fact, no "thing" ever causes or "creates" another "thing." Cause and Effect deals merely with "events." An "event" is that which comes, arrives or happens, as a result or consequent of some preceding event. No event "creates" another event, but is merely a preceding link in the great orderly chain of events flowing from the creative energy of THE ALL.

The LCP Solution
by B. Jacqueline Stordy Malcolm J. NichollThis important new book documents a major breakthrough in the treatment of the three most widespread learning disabilities--ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia ("clumsy child syndrome"). Although these conditions have reached epidemic proportions, treatment has been limited to ineffective behavioral therapies or the controversial prescription drug Ritalin. Now Dr. B. Jacqueline Stordy, a leading researcher in the field, reveals a stunning new treatment based on a simple nutritional supplement: LCP (long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids). The LCP Solution is the first book to describe this new natural treatment and to explain how children (and adults) can incorporate it into their daily lives. As a member of a family with a long history of dyslexia, Dr. Stordy discovered in a pioneering experiment that dyslexic and dyspraxic children who began taking a dietary supplement consisting of LCP experienced dramatic transformations in the quality of their lives. At the same time, parallel studies conducted at Purdue University came up with similar results with children who had ADHD. The effect of this dietary supplement was nothing short of revolutionary: after only a few weeks, dyslexic and ADHD children became calmer, more focused, easier to teach, while dyspraxics improved significantly in dexterity and balance, showing markedly less anxiety. In The LCP Solution, Dr. Stordy documents how this life-changing treatment came about and explains step-by-step how sufferers of each of the three major conditions can use it to change their lives at home, at school, and at work. Illuminating, vividly presented, and authoritative in its findings, this book will revolutionize our approach to learning disabilities. LCPs are natural, simple to use, and amazing in their benefits. If you or someone you love suffers from a learning disability, this book is essential reading.

The Labyrinth of Mind and World: Beyond Internalism–Externalism
by Sanjit ChakrabortyThis book carries forward the discourse on the mind’s engagement with the world. It reviews the semantic and metaphysical debates around internalism and externalism, the location of content and the indeterminacy of meaning in language. The volume analyzes the writings of Jackson, Chomsky, Putnam, Quine, Bilgrami and others, to reconcile opposing theories of language and the mind. It ventures into Cartesian ontology and Fregean semantics to understand how mental content becomes world-oriented in our linguistic communication. Further, the author explores the liaison between the mind and the world from the phenomenological perspective, particularly, Husserl’s linguistic turn and Heidegger’s intersubjective entreaty for Dasein. The book conceives of thought as a biological and socio-linguistic product which engages with the mind-world question through the conceptual and causal apparatuses of language. A major intervention in the field of philosophy of language, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers interested in philosophy, phenomenology, epistemology and metaphysics.

The Lagasse Girls' Big Flavor, Bold Taste--and No Gluten!: 100 Gluten-Free Recipes from EJ's Fried Chicken to Momma's Strawberry Shortcake
by Jessie Lagasse Swanson Jilly LagasseWhen you have to give up gluten, either for yourself or a family member, you may think you have to say good-bye to all of the comforting foods you love. It's hard enough adopting a new way of eating, but the idea of giving up your favorite fried chicken, mac 'n' cheese, or oatmeal raisin cookies is downright unfair and intimidating (and if your kids are the ones diagnosed, it can be even more difficult!). It's a story Jilly and Jessie Lagasse know well. With a father famous for his bold Creole cuisine, Jilly and Jessie grew up loving rich foods full of big flavor. When they learned they both had to eliminate gluten, the Lagasse girls made it their mission to demonstrate that "gluten-free" doesn't have to mean "flavor-free. " After years of gluten-free eating and experimentation, they're here to help you re-create classic recipes and all-time favorites made without gluten--without sacrificing any of the signature flavors that make them so irresistible. Using everyday ingredients you can find at most grocery stores, Jilly and Jessie share recipes for breakfasts, lunches (including hearty salads and soups), appetizers, mains, and, of course, scrumptious desserts. With dairy-free and quick-and-easy options as well, Jilly and Jessie make gluten-free eating simple and extraordinarily delicious--whether you're cooking for one or two, hosting a family get-together, or feeding the whole Little League team.

The Land Is Dying
by Ruth Jane Prince Paul Wenzel GeisslerBased on several years of ethnographic fieldwork, the book explores life in and around a Luo-speaking village in western Kenya during a time of death. The epidemic of HIV/AIDS affects every aspect of sociality and pervades villagers' debates about the past, the future and the ethics of everyday life. Central to such debates is a discussion of touch in the broad sense of concrete, material contact between persons. In mundane practices and in ritual acts, touch is considered to be key to the creation of bodily life as well as social continuity. Underlying the significance of material contact is its connection with growth - of persons and groups, animals, plants and the land - and the forward movement of life more generally. Under the pressure of illness and death, economic hardship and land scarcity, as well as bitter struggles about the relevance and application of Christianity and 'Luo tradition' in daily life, people find it difficult to agree about the role of touch in engendering growth, or indeed about the aims of growth itself.
