The Spiritual Foundations of Aikido

by William Gleason

Morihei Ueshiba, who founded Aikido early in this century, intended that his martial art would give form to profound spiritual truth, and lead to a unification of the world's peoples. He saw Aikido not as a fighting method or as a competitive sport but rather as a means of becoming one with the laws of universal order--ki, or life energy. Unfortunately, the subtleties of Ueshiba's teachings, veiled in the esoteric terminology of Shinto, can be puzzling for even the most advanced practitioners. They are not passed down today, and have never been introduced to the West. Gleason, a fifth-degree (Godan) black belt in Aikido, recognizing the importance of the spiritual aspects of the discipline, researched its roots in Shinto, and in this book is able to offer a clear explanation of Ueshiba's teachings.• Unlike the common "how-to" manuals on basic technique, this is the first book to introduce the underlying spiritual principles of Aikido--the elusive concept of kototama (word souls), expressed as one spirit, four souls, three origins, and eight powers--and how they relate to the forms.• Teaches the student how to use Aikido to accomplish spiritual goals. • Reveals little-known teachings of Shinto and Aikido, relating them to Buddhism, Christianity, and other spiritual teachings.

The Spiritual Foundations Of Aikido

by William Gleason

A leading American aikido teacher shows how this 20th-century martial art developed from the ancient spiritual traditions of Japan, not as a fighting method but rather as a means of becoming one with the laws of universal order.

Yet what if powerful sacraments existed to help us directly experience the sacred? What if there were ways to seek out the meaning of being human and our place in the universe, to see the sacred in the world that surrounds us? In this book, more than 25 spiritual leaders, scientists, and psychedelic visionaries examine how we can return to the primary spiritual encounters at the basis of all religions through the guided use of entheogens. With contributions by Albert Hofmann, Huston Smith, Stanislav Grof, Charles Tart, Alexander “Sasha” Shulgin, Frances Vaughan, Myron Stolaroff, and many others, this book explores protocols for ceremonial use of psychedelics, the challenges of transforming entheogenic insights into enduring change, psychoactive sacraments in the Bible, myths surrounding the use of LSD, and the transformative ayahuasca rituals of Santo Daime. It also includes personal accounts of Walter Pahnke’s Good Friday Experiment as well as a 25-year follow-up with its participants. Dispelling fears of inauthentic spirituality, addiction, and ill-prepared encounters with the holy, this book reveals the potential of entheogens as catalysts for spiritual development, a path through which faith can directly encounter God’s power, and the beginning of a new religious era based on personal spiritual experience.

Spiritual Healing

by Fraser Watts

There has recently been much interest in the relationship between science and religion, and how they combine to give us a 'binocular' perspective on things. One important phenomenon which has been neglected in recent work is the concept of spiritual healing. This edited collection explores a variety of approaches to spiritual healing from different religious points of view, identifying both what it is and how it works. The authors also explore the biological and psychological processes, open to scientific enquiry, through which healing may be mediated. As such, this book indicates the central proposition that religious and scientific perspectives answer different questions about healing, and there is not necessarily any conflict between them.

Spiritual Healing in Hospitals and Clinics: Scientific Evidence that Energy Medicine Promotes Speedy Recovery and Positive Outcomes

by Sandy Edwards

• Presents the positive results of the author&’s two-year clinical trial of spiritual healing (energy medicine) involving 200 hospital patients • Shares intriguing evidence from case studies as well as other research projects that negate the myth that energy healing is only a placebo • Explores how spiritual healing not only led to improved outcomes for patients, but also faster recovery times and thus less time spent in hospitals Seven years after qualifying to become a spiritual healer, Sandy Edwards approached a consultant gastroenterologist at a city hospital and offered to give healing to his patients as a volunteer. She provided healing sessions alongside conventional medical treatments, documenting the effects in a scientific way, and the doctor was surprised at the overwhelmingly positive outcomes. In partnership with the University of Birmingham, as well as a national grant to fund the study, Sandy instigated the largest clinical research trial of spiritual healing in the world. Revealing the outstanding results of this two-year medical trial, which involved 200 chronically ill hospital patients, Sandy demonstrates that spiritual healing (energy medicine) can support the healing process of a patient, whether they are in pain, sick, stressed, or depressed. In many cases, these patients had been suffering for a long time with little hope of recovery. Yet they improved substantially in numerous ways after receiving just five 20-minute healing sessions. Illustrating how spiritual healing helps a patient from pain and distress through to recovery, Sandy shares intriguing evidence from case studies as well as other research projects that negate the myth that energy healing is only a placebo. She offers statements from medical professionals who have witnessed the results firsthand and also details a quick technique to relieve pain that readers can apply in their own lives. Showing how spiritual healing not only led to improved outcomes for patients, but also faster recovery times and thus less time spent in hospitals, Sandy moves us one step closer to widespread acceptance for spiritual healing and energy medicine.

Spiritual Help for Daily Living

by Andrew Murray

"Some time ago I (Andrew Murray) was asked to write a series of articles under the heading, "Aids to Devotion," for the Lovedale Christian Express. My mind was at the time much occupied with the Epistle to the Ephesians, and I thought it might be possible to connect its teaching with the effort to give some help for the quiet hour. This led to my writing two of the introductory chapters, and the twelve that deal with the chief thoughts of the Epistle. I am deeply conscious of how defective they are and how little able I have been to satisfy myself in giving expression to what I think I have seen of the treasures that God has stored away in this Epistle for His Church. I have nevertheless ventured on their publication in this little book, in the hope that God may use them to help some of His children to realize what the standard of the true Christian life is as it is set before us in the Epistle, and what absolute divine assurance it gives us that God is able and willing to make all that it contains true in our experience. I send this little book out with the prayer with which Paul wrote his Epistle, "that God, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Himself." Without that Spirit, specially sought and received, and yielded to in great teachableness, the truths of the Epistle will remain a hidden mystery. With that teaching, we shall "be filled with the knowledge of God's Will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding," we shall learn to know what passes knowledge, and be brought to experience that His power is able actually to do in us exceeding abundantly above what we can ask or think." The notes are instructive and have tips for those in ministry.
