A Sudden Light: A Novel
by Garth SteinFrom Garth Stein, author of the beloved bestseller The Art of Racing in the Rain—now a major motion picture! The New York Times bestselling &“witty, atmospheric&” (People) story of a once powerful American family, and the price that must be paid by the heirs as they struggle for redemption: &“A captivating page-turner&” (Star Tribune, Minneapolis).Twenty-three years after the fateful summer of 1990, Trevor Riddell recalls the events surrounding his fourteenth birthday, when he gets his first glimpse of the infamous Riddell House. Built from the spoils of a massive timber fortune, the legendary family mansion is constructed of giant whole trees and is set on a huge estate overlooking Seattle’s Puget Sound. Trevor’s bankrupt parents have separated, and his father, Jones Riddell, has brought Trevor to Riddell House with a goal: to join forces with Aunt Serena, dispatch the ailing and elderly Grandpa Samuel to a nursing home, sell off the house and property for development, and divide up the profits. But as young Trevor explores the house’s hidden stairways and forgotten rooms, he discovers secrets that convince him that the family plan may be at odds with the land’s true destiny. Only Trevor’s willingness to face the dark past of his forefathers will reveal the key to his family’s future. Spellbinding and atmospheric, A Sudden Light is rich with vivid characters, poetic scenes of natural beauty, and powerful moments of spiritual transcendence. “Garth Stein is resourceful, cleverly piecing together the family history with dreams, overheard conversations, and reminiscences…a tale well told,” (The Seattle Times)—a triumphant work of a master storyteller at the height of his power.

by Elizabeth KimmelIn the tradition of the loveable but flawed heroines from Louise Rennison's Georgia Nicholson Books, Kathleen O'Dell's Agnes Parker novels, and Lois Lowry's Anastasia Krupnik books comes Elizabeth Cody Kimmel's Kat Roberts. All Kat wants is to be normal, or at least to look that way to students at her new school. But her mother is a medium, and not the kind that fits in between small and large; Kat's mom is the kind of medium who sees spirits and communicates with them. And, even worse, Kat has just discovered that she can see spirits too. In fact, she seems to be the only one capable of helping a spirit at her school cross over successfully. The question is can she do it without needing to switch schools herself? In this the first of three SUDDENLY SUPERNATURAL books, Elizabeth Cody Kimmel brings humor, heart, and a little supernatural charm to the trials and tribulations of finding out who you are and who you want to be--all while surviving the seventh grade.

Summer is Ended and We Are Not Yet Saved
by Joey ComeauMartin is going to Bible Camp for the summer. He's going to learn archery and swimming, and he's going to make new friends. He's pretty excited, but that's probably because nobody told him that this is a horror novel. Eleven-year-old Martin's mother works in the movie business, doing (what else?) special-effects make-up for horror movies. She has a job in Toronto but doesn't have the money to hire somebody to look after Martin, so he volunteers to ship himself off to Bible camp, where someone is systematically killing off the campers in various maniacal ways. The violence is right out of a 1980s-style horror flick, as is the cast of characters: Martin and his fellow campers; Chip and his fellow camp counselors; and affable Father Tony, the camp's leader. Lean and mean and hugely entertaining, with no high-falutin' literary pretenses note to fans of slasher flicks: yes, the villain is exactly who you think it is but with a genuinely shocking conclusion, the book should be a big hit with old-school horror fans.
