Transmedia Creatures: Frankenstein’s Afterlives

by Lidia De Michelis Eleanor Beal Gino Roncaglia Claire Nally Claudia Gualtieri Federico Meschini Enrico Reggiani Diego Saglia Daniele Pio Buenza Ruth Heholt Andrew McInnes Janet Larson

On the 200th anniversary of the first edition of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Transmedia Creatures presents studies of Frankenstein by international scholars from converging disciplines such as humanities, musicology, film studies, television studies, English and digital humanities. These innovative contributions investigate the afterlives of a novel taught in a disparate array of courses - Frankenstein disturbs and transcends boundaries, be they political, ethical, theological, aesthetic, and not least of media, ensuring its vibrant presence in contemporary popular culture. Transmedia Creatures highlights how cultural content is redistributed through multiple media, forms and modes of production (including user-generated ones from “below”) that often appear synchronously and dismantle and renew established readings of the text, while at the same time incorporating and revitalizing aspects that have always been central to it. The authors engage with concepts, value systems and aesthetic-moral categories—among them the family, horror, monstrosity, diversity, education, risk, technology, the body—from a variety of contemporary approaches and highly original perspectives, which yields new connections. Ultimately, Frankenstein, as evidenced by this collection, is paradoxically enriched by the heteroglossia of preconceptions, misreadings, and overreadings that attend it, and that reveal the complex interweaving of perceptions and responses it generates. The Transmigration of Timothy Archer: A Maze Of Death /valis / The Divine Invasion / The Transmigration Of Timothy Archer (VALIS Trilogy #3)

by Philip K. Dick

From the acclaimed author of VALIS, the world of an Episcopal bishop is shaken up by death and the discovery of ancient scrolls in Israel. The final book in Philip K. Dick&’s VALIS trilogy, The Transmigration of Timothy Archer brings the author&’s search for the identity and nature of God to a close. The novel follows Bishop Timothy Archer as he travels to Israel, ostensibly to examine ancient scrolls bearing the words of Christ. But, more importantly, this leads him to examine the decisions he made during his life and how they may have contributed to the suicide of his mistress and son. This introspective book is one of Dick&’s most philosophical and literary, delving into the mysteries of religion and of faith itself. As one of Dick&’s final works, it also provides unique insight into the mind of a genius, whose work was still in the process of maturing at the time of his death.&“An eerie and splendid book.&”—Washington Post

Transmutation: Stories

by Alex DiFrancesco

Transgressive, transformative short stories that explore the margins of trans lives.Building on the success of All City, here is a wry, and at the same time dark and risk-taking, story collection from author (and baker) Alex DiFrancesco that pushes the boundaries of transgender awareness and filial bonds. Here is the hate between 16-year-old Junie, who is transitioning, and their mom's boyfriend Chad when the family moves into Chad's house on Lake Erie. And here is the love being tested between Sawyer and his dad, who named his boat after his child and resists changing it from Sara to Sawyer now. There is DiFrancesco's willingness to enter lands that are violent and comfortless in some of these stories, testing the limits of what it means to be human, sometimes returning stronger and wiser and sometimes not returning at all as their characters surge forward into unknown spaces.DiFrancesco's first novel All City (Seven Stories 2019) was praised by Publishers Weekly as a "loving, grieving warning [that] thoughtfully traces the resilience, fragility, and joy of precarious communities in an immediate, compassionate voice." All City was one of BookRiot's "Best Post-Apocalyptic Books of 2019," Entropy Mag's "Best of 2019," and Largehearted Boy's "Favorite Novels of 2019." It was a finalist for the 2019 Ohioana Book Award for Fiction.

Transnational Horror Cinema

by Sophia Siddique Raphael Raphael

This book broadens the frameworks by which horror is generally addressed. Rather than being constrained by psychoanalytical models of repression and castration, the volume embraces M. M. Bakhtin's theory of the grotesque body. For Bakhtin, the grotesque body is always a political body, one that exceeds the boundaries and borders that seek to contain it, to make it behave and conform. This vital theoretical intervention allows Transnational Horror Cinema to widen its scope to the social and cultural work of these global bodies of excess and the economy of their grotesque exchanges. With this in mind, the authors consider these bodies' potentials to explore and perhaps to explode rigid cultural scripts of embodiment, including gender, race, and ability.

The foursome will soon discover that out-of-body life isn't so subtle after all--there are some very real, and very dangerous, things happening out there in the woods. The science fiction inventiveness of Madeleine L'Engle meets the social commentary of Gary Schmidt in this thrilling tale of missing persons, first crushes, embarrassing pajamas, and thought-provoking dilemmas.
