The Enterprise of Death

Unfortunately, quitting his company proves even more hazardous than remaining his pupil when she is afflicted with a terrible curse. Yet salvation may lie in a mysterious tome her tutor has hidden somewhere on the war-torn continent. She sets out on a seemingly impossible journey to find the book, never suspecting her fate is tied to three strangers: the artist Niklaus Manuel Deutsch, the alchemist Dr. Paracelsus, and a gun-slinging Dutch mercenary. Entropy in Bloom: Stories
by Jeremy Robert JohnsonFor more than a decade, Jeremy Robert Johnson has been bubbling under the surface of both literary and genre fiction. His short stories present a brilliantly dark and audaciously weird realm where cosmic nightmares collide with all-too-human characters and apocalypses of all shapes and sizes loom ominously. In "Persistence Hunting," a lonely distance runner is seduced into a brutal life of crime with an ever-narrowing path for escape. In "When Susurrus Stirs," an unlucky pacifist must stop a horrifying parasite from turning his body into a sentient hive. Running through all of Johnson's work is a hallucinatory vision and deeply-felt empathy, earning the author a reputation as one of today's most daring and thrilling writers. Featuring the best of his independently-published short fiction, as well as an exclusive, never-before-published novella "The Sleep of Judges"--where a father's fight against the denizens of a drug den becomes a mind-bending suburban nightmare--Entropy in Bloom is a perfect compendium for avid fans and an ideal entry point for adventurous readers seeking the humor, heartbreak, and terror of JRJ's strange new worlds.
Entwined
by Cherie ColyerOnly a few months after embracing her magical powers, defeating a dark witch at her high school, and banishing a faerie prince back to his realm, sixteen-year-old Madison Riley is back in book three of the Embrace series--and doing the bidding of a demon. She has no choice but to do so if she wants him to honor the deal they made at his crossroads territory to save the life of someone she loves. Twenty years of service to a creature of hell is a big price, but it sure beats the alternative: selling her soul. But life gets complicated when you're the beck-and-call witch of a crossroad demon. Caden, the demon she serves, wants to become master of Death Himself, and he has the means to do it as long as Madison helps him find all the pieces of an enchanted "binding" necklace. It's up to Madison and her coven to foil his plans, but Caden's intentions aren't entirely evil--and the kisses he seals his deals with aren't too bad either. As Caden's motives test Madison's trust, his shameful flirting tries her boyfriend Isaac's patience. But being caught in a love triangle with two supernatural hotties is perhaps the least of her concerns when the coven's interference in Caden's plot might just cost Madison her life and unleash hell on earth.
Epidemic Cinema: The Rise of a Genre (Routledge Advances in Film Studies)
by Julia EcheverríaThis book examines the recent trend in global cinema to feature infectious disease. As the global crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic materialised the anxieties and discourses of world risk that had long been portrayed in popular media, the book provides a novel definition of the epidemic film genre and offers a systematic look into the narrative and stylistic conventions that characterise it. Epidemic Cinema traces the evolution of the genre from its early cinematic origins to establish the founding principles of a genre standing at the crossroads between science-fiction and horror. It draws on close textual analysis to show how the pandemic reified one of the central predicaments of epidemic narratives: the constant tension existing between free-floating phenomena and the impulse to control and resist such phenomena, ultimately epitomised by the trope of the border. Showing how infectious diseases offer a rich allegorical frame which cinema uses to articulate timely anxieties of growingly invisible and deterritorialised risks, the author presents the prevalence of contagion in popular culture as a symptom of this growingly viral and virus-ridden context, both in its most literal and metaphorical sense. This insightful study will interest students and scholars of film studies, global cinema, science-fiction, horror, popular culture and genre theory.

The Equinox
by MJ Preston&“For those looking for a throwback to the writings of Stephen King . . . The Equinox by MJ Preston . . . [brings] horror back to its core&” (Philip C. Perron, Dark Discussions Podcast). It has existed for centuries. A dark curse held captive by an ancient ritual, a creature of insatiable hunger possessing the ability to change shape at will. During the spring and fall equinox it would break through the walls, separating our worlds to feed. Now it walks among us, unrestrained, and very hungry. Daniel Blackbird has been chasing the murderous shapeshifter known as The Walker across North America for over a decade, obsessed with vengeance. As the Walker leaves a bloody trail of eviscerated victims in its wake, Blackbird finds himself drawn to the prairie town of Thomasville where a string of child murders is being investigated. There, the chief of police, David Logan has uncovered a mass grave in the cornfield of a local farmer named Stephen Hopper. Hopper has confessed, even identified the graves, but claims that he is merely the caretaker of this macabre burial ground and that a creature who he thinks is the devil is responsible. As Chief Logan grapples with the unthinkable, Blackbird sets out for the prairie town which, as the Equinox approaches, is destined to become a killing ground where cultures and worlds will collide . . . &“A tale that horrifies while dispensing generous dollops of Native American mysticism . . . an explosion of tension and violence.&” —Horror World

Eros and Evil: The Sexual Psychopathology of Witchcraft
by R. E. L. MastersEros and Evil is the first systematic modern study of the sexual behavior of witches (and of witch hunters) and, as such, is an important contribution to psychological literature. Emphasizing the period between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries (the witch era, when sexual licentiousness in fact and fantasy was rampant), R. E. L. Masters contends that intercourse with devils and demons was the central fact of witchcraft. His discussion ranges over such subjects as the anatomy of the devil, the sexual psychology of demons, and erotic cannibalism, and he shows how hysteria, mental disorders, and drugs may explain some of demonic sexuality’s strangest aspects. Most significantly, Eros and Evil throws light on the origins and development of Western sexual (or antisexual) morals. No other work makes so clear the superstitious and often diseased foundation of the sexual code by which we are still attempting to live. This edition of Eros and Evil, first published in 1962, contains the complete text of Ludovico Maria Sinistrari’s Demoniality, one of the great classics of demonology.
