Absolution

by Gail Gallant

In this suspenseful, romantic sequel to Apparition, Amelia Mackenzie, reluctant teenage clairvoyant, is caught up in a series of paranormal mysteries that threaten to unravel everything she believes in. After Amelia's best friend and secret crush Matthew dies in an apparent suicide, Amelia is heartbroken. Adding to her upheaval is the realization that she is firmly in the clutches of Matthew's ghost. Even after the barn in which Matthew had died is burnt to the ground, Matthew's spirit continues to stalk the ruins and Amelia must try to take care of his increasingly restless and reckless ghostly acts. It's not easy for Amelia to keep Matthew's presence a secret from her two brothers and her grandmother, Joyce. Amelia even tries to keep Matthew's 'survival' from her ghost tracking mentor Morris and his son Kip. But she is harbouring an even bigger secret these days: her deepening feelings for Kip. Unable to reconcile her longing for the flesh-and-blood Kip with her commitment to Matthew's ghost, she's pushed Kip away. Now, he's gone back to school in Chicago, and she can't get him off her mind. By the time Amelia and Morris are given a new ghost-tracking challenge, Kip has returned to Grey County for spring break, and long buried sparks are beginning to fly. As the trio set out to uncover the mysterious story behind a local inn that seems to harbour a ghost with a guilty conscience, desperate for forgiveness the mystery only deepens. Before long, a stretch of country road nearby reveals a strange history of its own--a series of fatal car accidents involving deer. Is there a connection between the haunted inn and the deadly stretch of road that it's on? With the rivalry intensifying between Matthew and Kip, Amelia's heart is in more conflict than ever. The ghost Matthew gets ever more comfortable in his phantom skin, which means Kip's headed for trouble, and only Amelia can protect him.

Absolution: A Southern Reach Novel

by Jeff VanderMeer

Ten years after the publication of Annihilation, the surprise fourth volume in Jeff VanderMeer&’s blockbuster Southern Reach Trilogy. When the Southern Reach Trilogy was first published a decade ago, it was an instant sensation, celebrated in a front-page New York Times story before publication, hailed by Stephen King and many others. Each volume climbed the bestsellers lists, awards were won, the books made the rare transition from paperback original to hardcover, and the movie adaptation became a cult classic. All told, the trilogy has sold more than a million copies, and has secured its place in the pantheon of twenty-first-century literature. And yet, for Jeff VanderMeer there was never full closure to the story of Area X. There were a few mysteries that had gone unsolved, some key points of view never aired. There were stories left to tell. There remained questions about who had been complicit in creating the conditions for Area X to take hold; the story of the first mission into the Forgotten Coast—before Area X was called Area X—had never been fully told; and what if someone had foreseen the world after Acceptance? How crazy would they seem?Structured in three parts, each recounting a new expedition, this book delivers some long-awaited answers, to be sure, but also more questions, and profound new surprises. Absolution is a brilliant, beautiful, and ever-terrifying plunge into unique and fertile literary territory. It is the final word on one of the most provocative and popular speculative fiction series of our time.

However, finding each other and coming to terms with their species is the least of their worries. Quincy is expected to select a proper female mate, father a cub, and take his place as heir to the pride. Except Quincy refuses, having no interest in women or leadership and knowing he isn't right for it. But his father will stop at nothing--not even attempting to kill Miles--to get his way. Across the Line

by Albert Payson Terhune Anice Terhune

Albert Payson Terhune was not only universally famous for his stories of the collies of Sunnybank: as readers of his The Son of God know, he was also of a deeply religious mind. Some time before his death in February 1942, he made some rough notes for an article on a subject which had never ceased to concern him and which has absorbed the thoughts of human beings from time immemorial. As Rev. Dr. Sizoo remarks in the Foreword to this volume, “The human heart has always rebelled against the silence of death. Why should those whom we have loved and lost suddenly cease to be concerned about us and refuse to counsel and enhearten?...Are there any signals which flash back and forth? Do they know us? Can we speak with them? Are they concerned for us?”Anice Terhune, the author’s wife, offers an affirmative answer to these questions in the notes and comments that form the greater part of the present book. Mrs. Terhune was the author of The Bert Terhune I Knew (1943) as well as of many short stories, articles, and of three novels among which are The Eyes of the Village and The White Mouse. Pianist, organist, and composer, she has published many books of children’s songs. She was born in Hampden, Massachusetts, of an old New Jersey family, a direct descendant of Richard Stockton, signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Act of God

by Jill Ciment

Jill Ciment's books have been hailed as "stunning," "powerful," and "provocative." Alice Sebold has called her works "beautifully written." Now the author of Heroic Measures ("Smart and funny and completely surprising . . . I loved every page." --Ann Patchett; "Brave, generous, nearly perfect." --Los Angeles Times) has given us a contemporary noir novel that starts out a comedy of errors and turns darker at every hairpin turn. It's the summer of 2015, Brooklyn. The city is sweltering from another record-breaking heat wave, this one accompanied by biblical rains. Edith, a recently retired legal librarian, and her identical twin sister, Kat, a feckless romantic who's mistaken her own eccentricity for originality, discover something ominous in their hall closet: it seems to be phosphorescent, it's a mushroom . . . and it's sprouting from their wall. Upstairs, their landlady, Vida Cebu, a Shakespearian actress far more famous for her TV commercials for Ziberax (the first female sexual enhancement pill) than for her stage work, discovers that a petite Russian girl, a runaway au pair, has been secretly living in her guest room closet. When the police arrest the intruder, they find a second mushroom, also glowing, under the intruder's bedding. Soon the HAZMAT squad arrives, and the four women are forced to evacuate the contaminated row house with only the clothes on their backs. As the mold infestation spreads from row house to high-rise, and frightened, bewildered New Yorkers wait out this plague (is it an act of God?) on their city and property, the four women become caught up in a centrifugal nightmare. Part horror story, part screwball comedy, Jill Ciment's brilliant suspense novel looks at what happens when our lives--so seemingly set and ordered yet so precariously balanced--break down in the wake of calamity. It is, as well, a novel about love (familial and profound) and how it can appear from the most unlikely circumstances. From the Hardcover edition.
