Reprehensible: Polite Histories of Bad Behaviour
by Mikey RobinsRollicking and informative, Reprehensible: Polite Histories of Bad Behaviour is your guide through some of the most shameful behaviour indulged in by humanity&’s most celebrated figures, as told by Mikey Robins, one of Australia&’s most loved comedians. It is often said that we live in an era of constant outrage, but we are definitely not the inventors of outrageousness. Let&’s be honest, human beings have always been appalling. Not everyone and not all the time, but our history is littered with those whose work and deeds have rendered them . . . reprehensible. Sometimes it&’s our most esteemed luminaries who behave the worst. What are we to make of Catherine the Great&’s extensive collection of pornographic furniture, Hans Christian Andersen&’s too-much-information diary and Karl Marx&’s epic pub crawls? Or hall-of-fame huckster William McCloundy, who in 1901 actually &‘sold&’ the Brooklyn Bridge to an unsuspecting tourist, and the pharaoh who covered his slaves in honey to keep flies off his meal? Did you know about the royal ticklers of the House of Romanov, and the bizarre coronation rituals of early Irish kings? (Let&’s just say that eating a white horse wasn&’t the weirdest part of the ceremony.) So sit back and rest your conscience: there will be a host of scoundrels, bounders and reprobates, tales of lust and power aplenty, as we indulge in that sweet spot where history meets outrage, with just a bit of old-school TMZ thrown in for good measure.Praise for Reprehensible: &‘Finally, Mikey Robins has put his vulgar mind to good use, telling history&’s lesser known grubby yarns. I love it!&’ Tom Gleeson
Representations of France in English Satirical Prints 1740–1832
by John Richard MooresBetween 1740 and 1832, England witnessed what has become known as its 'golden age of caricature'. This coincided with an era of dramatic social and political change both at home and abroad. In this period of intense international war and rivalry, Britain's relationship with France proved particularly turbulent, leading to suggestions that its national culture and identity was defined by its 'Francophobia'. Though they are often employed as shorthand evidence of hostility towards France, under closer scrutiny Georgian satirical prints reveal attitudes towards the French 'Other' that were far more complex, ambivalent, empathetic and multifaceted than has previously been recognised. At the same time, print satires purportedly dealing with French subjects were often commenting pointedly on British politics, society or culture, often in ways which revealed cultural insecurity rather than confident national superiority.
Republican Party Reptile: The Confessions, Adventures, Essays and (Other) Outrages of . . . P. J. O'Rourke
by P. J. O'Rourke"I think our agenda is clear. We are opposed to: government spending, Kennedy kids, seat-belt laws, busing our children anywhere other than Yale, trailer courts near our vacation homes, all tiny Third World countries that don't have banking secrecy laws, aerobics, the UN, taxation without tax loopholes, and jewelry on men. We are in favor of: guns, drugs, fast cars, free love (if our wives don't find out), a sound dollar, and a strong military with spiffy uniforms. There are thousands of people in America who feel this way, especially after three or four drinks. If all of us would unite and work together, we could give this country. . . well, a real bad hangover."
Reputation: A Novel
by Lex CroucherBridgerton meets Gossip Girl with a dash of Jane Austen, in Reputation, a Regency-era historical romantic comedy with a deliciously feminist twist, from a hilarious new British voice, Lex Croucher.Abandoned by her parents, bookish and sheltered Georgiana Ellers is spending the summer with her stodgy aunt and uncle at their home in the English countryside. At a particularly dull party, she meets the enigmatic Frances Campbell, a wealthy member of the in-crowd who delights Georgiana with her disregard for so-called "polite society."Lonely and vulnerable, Georgiana quickly falls in with Frances and her wealthy, wild, and deeply improper friends, who introduce her to the upper echelons of Regency aristocracy, and a world of drunken debauchery, frivolous spending, and mysterious young men. One, in particular, stands out from the rest: Thomas Hawksley, who has a tendency to cross paths with Georgiana in her most embarrassing moments. Sparks fly, but Thomas seems unimpressed with the company she is keeping. And soon, Georgiana begins to wonder whether she’ll ever feel like she fits in––or if the price of entry into Frances’s gilded world will ultimately be higher than she is willing to pay.Set against a backdrop of lavish parties, handsome men on horseback––and in a time when one’s reputation was everything––this edgy, hilarious romantic comedy explores sex, consent, belonging, and status through the eyes of an unforgettable heroine that Austen herself would have cheered for.

by Jim KnipfelA longtime Wisconsin sheriff faces his first-ever homicide: &“[Fuses] murder and mortuary science in a novel of the humorously macabre&” (Derek Davis, author of Gifts of a Dead Man). In the nearly twenty years that Leonard Koznowski has been sheriff of Beaver Rapids, Wisconsin, he&’s never encountered a homicide. When the local mortician and his assistant are brutally gunned down, Leonard is thrust into a tumultuous investigation linking religion, high school athletics, the black market of body parts, unwholesome sexual proclivities, and a sinister secret society. And with deer season fast approaching, the timing could&’ve been a hell of a lot better. Inspired by actual events, Jim Knipfel gives a hilariously dark, satirical twist to the American pastoral. &“In Sheriff Koznowski, Knipfel creates a straightforward man of the law with more smarts than he can admit to, while surrounded by deputies incapable of the simplest of procedures―like thinking. Rest in Pieces
by Bess LovejoyIN THE LONG RUN, WE'RE ALL DEAD. But for some of the most influential figures in history, death marked the start of a new adventure. The famous deceased have been stolen, burned, sold, pickled, frozen, stuffed, impersonated, and even filed away in a lawyer's office. Their fingers, teeth, toes, arms, legs, skulls, hearts, lungs, and nether regions have embarked on voyages that crisscross the globe and stretch the imagination. Counterfeiters tried to steal Lincoln's corpse. Einstein's brain went on a cross-country road trip.
