Send in the Clowns: Humanitarian Clowning in Crisis Zones

by David Bridel Mike Funt

Send in the Clowns presents interviews with twenty-four pioneering humanitarian and activist clowns and thought leaders working in hospitals, refugee camps, orphanages and war zones, and at the sites of street protests and locations of social unrest across the world. This book is built around interviews with some of the world’s leading practitioners of clowning for change, justice, and health outside of the entertainment mainstream, featuring artists and organizations including Patch Adams (US), the Dream Doctors Project (Israel), Clown Me In (Lebanon), and Doutores da Alegria (Brazil). Situating the topic in relation to indigenous and ritual clowning, investigating the various functions of the clown in early societies, and centering the discourse around interviews with key practitioners, the book explores a wide range of clown applications across the globe. This includes the special significance of the clown archetype in socially, politically, and culturally challenging situations, the successes and challenges of the art activists who are at the forefront of this movement, and the modern humanitarian clown’s relationship to original forms of clowning that can be traced back through history. This is a vital resource for anyone studying, teaching, or practicing clown work in applied contexts, from health care to conflict resolution.

Senilidad

by Italo Svevo

Italo Svevo

Senior Moments

by Angus FitzSimons

Have you had a Senior Moment yet? Maybe you know someone who's had a few? Check this list to know for sure: · You can remember being told the King was dead (George, not Elvis).· You still say 'colour television', and you watch television on a television.· Your home phone rings and you answer it. (And you still have a phone, not a 'landline'.)· You boast about 'doing it' three times a night and that's just getting up to pee.· You realise that your wardrobe has become ironic. You're not back in fashion, but you're hip. (And ironically, you now have an artificial hip).If you answered 'yes' to one or more of the above, congratulations! You are officially a Senior and this book is here to guide you through your best years (i.e. the past). Stroll, or maybe shuffle, down Nostalgia Avenue and bask in the glory of growing old disgracefully. (If you are a Young Person, this is the easiest Senior gift idea ever. You're welcome!)

Sense

by Arch Tait Arslan Khasavov

SENSE is the name of the organization launched by a Narcissistic 20-year-old boy who wants to live for the sake of a lofty goal but is unable to fit into any socio-cultural framework. He yearns for glory and finally decides that the only way to win it is to stage a revolution.SENSE paints an ironic picture of Russia's political life today and shows to what limits an indifferent and hypocritical society can push a romantically-minded young person. It is about a young man's rebellious search for identity and his attempts to find some sense in the chaos around him. In his attempts to find co-thinkers the protagonist meets ex-prisoners of Guantanamo, some National Bolsheviks, the Islamic Committee, and the Youth Union "Hurray!"The protagonist, called Artur, is an idealist who wants to live for the sake of a lofty goal. Through the eyes of a person who is unable to fit into any socio-cultural framework because of his lameness, and against the background of the present-day political situation, the author shows the limits to which an indifferent and hypocritical society can push a romantically-minded and well-meaning young person. He examines the world map and decides that Turkmenistan would be the best place for his revolutionary plan. He starts looking for followers prepared to die for a great cause and soon finds them among the members of present-day radical political organizations. He visits three such organizations: the National Bolsheviks, the Islamic Committee, and the Youth Union "Hurray!" He describes their gatherings vividly and with a strong dose of irony. He meets ex-prisoners of Guantanamo, who talk to him about the imminent battle of good and evil and the fight against the infidels. He witnesses the attack of Nashi-fighters on the National Bolsheviks. Finally he visits the office of the Kremlin-supported youth movement "Hurray!" where he is offered free use of all their facilities because "everything has been generously paid for."In the final part the hero muses over the goals of his movement as he finds on his desk a curious political program - which mysteriously materialized there -- called "Outlines of the Future State". It starts with a chapter on "reform of public heating" suggesting that houses should be heated with human excrement. The other proposed reforms are in the same absurdist style: to decree that all people should walk about naked, to ban the family and education, etc. Finally Artur drafts 136 young people and leads them to the Karakum Desert. For all of them it makes no difference what they are fighting for - the main thing is to break away from their bleak everyday existence and find glory.

Sentimental Education

by Gustave Flaubert

Based on Flaubert's own youthful passion for an older woman, Sentimental Education was described by its author as "the moral history of the men of my generation." It follows the amorous adventures of Frederic Moreau, a law student who, returning home to Normandy from Paris, notices Mme Arnoux, a slender, dark woman several years older than himself. It is the beginning of an infatuation that will last a lifetime. He befriends her husband, an influential businessman, and as their paths cross and re-cross over the years, Mme Arnoux remains the constant, unattainable love of Moreau's life. Blending love story, historical authenticity, and satire, Sentimental Education is one of the great French novels of the nineteenth century.

Sentimental Tales (Russian Library)

by Mikhail Zoshchenko

&“Dralyuk&’s new translation of Sentimental Tales, a collection of Zoshchenko&’s stories from the 1920s, is a delight that brings the author&’s wit to life.&”—The EconomistMikhail Zoshchenko&’s Sentimental Tales are satirical portraits of small-town characters on the fringes of Soviet society in the first decade of Bolshevik rule. The tales are narrated by one Kolenkorov, a writer not very good at his job, who takes credit for editing the tales in a series of comic prefaces. Yet beneath Kolenkorov&’s intrusive narration and sublime blathering, the stories are genuinely moving. They tell tales of unrequited love and amorous misadventures among down-on-their-luck musicians, provincial damsels, aspiring poets, and liberal aristocrats hopelessly out of place in the new Russia, against a backdrop of overcrowded apartments, scheming, and daydreaming. Zoshchenko&’s deadpan style and sly ventriloquy mask a biting critique of Soviet life—and perhaps life in general. An original perspective on Soviet society in the 1920s and simply uproariously funny, Sentimental Tales at last shows Anglophone readers why Zoshchenko is considered among the greatest humorists of the Soviet era. &“A book that would make Gogol guffaw.&”—Kirkus Reviews &“If you find Chekhov a bit tame and want a more bite to your fiction, then you need a dose of Zoshchenko, the premier Russian satirist of the twentieth century . . . Snap up this thin volume and enjoy.&”—Russian Life &“Mikhail Zoshchenko masterfully exhibits a playful seriousness. . . . Juxtaposing joyful wit with the bleakness of Soviet Russia, Sentimental Tales is a potent antidote for Russian literature&’s dour reputation.&”—Foreword Reviews &“Superb.&”—Los Angeles Review of Books

Senza Identità

by Jorge Moreno

- Mariola Díaz-Cano, scrittrice e proofreader.

A recent amputee removes herself from her body to keep her husband at bay. Separation Anxiety: A Novel
