Illustrating the Past in Early Modern England: The Representation of History in Printed Books
by James A. KnappIllustrating the Past is a study of the status of visual and verbal media in early modern English representations of the past. It focuses on general attitudes towards visual and verbal representations of history as well as specific illustrated books produced during the period. Through a close examination of the relationship of image to text in light of contemporary discussions of poetic and aesthetic practice, the book demonstrates that the struggle between the image and the word played a profoundly important role in England's emergent historical self-awareness. The opposition between history and story, fact and fiction, often tenuous, provided a sounding board for deeper conflicts over the form in which representations might best yield truth from history. The ensuing schism between poets and historians over the proper venue for the lessons of the past manifested itself on the pages of early modern printed books. The discussion focuses on the word and image relationships in several important illustrated books printed during the second half of the sixteenth century-including Holinshed's Chronicles (1577) and Foxe's Book of Martyrs (1563, 1570)-in the context of contemporary works on history and poetics, such as Sir Philip Sidney's Apology for Poetry and Thomas Blundeville's The true order and Method of wryting and reading Hystories. Illustrating the Past specifically answers two important questions concerning the resultant production of literary and historical texts in the period: Why did the use of images in printed histories suddenly become unpopular at the end of the sixteenth century? and What impact did this publishing trend have on writers of literary and historical texts?

(Im)politeness in McEwan’s Fiction: Literary Pragma-Stylistics
by Urszula KizelbachThis book is a pragma-stylistic study of Ian McEwan’s fiction, providing a qualitative analysis of his selected novels using (im)politeness theory. (Im)politeness is investigated on two levels of analysis: the level of the plot and the story world (intradiegetic level) and the level of the communication between the implied author and implied reader in fiction (extradiegetic level). The pragmatic theory of (im)politeness serves the aim of internal characterisation and helps readers to better understand and explain the characters’ motivations and actions, based on the stylistic analysis of their speech and thoughts and point of view. More importantly, the book introduces the notion of “the impoliteness of the literary fiction” – a state of affairs where the implied author (or narrator) expresses their impolite beliefs to the reader through the text, which has face-threatening consequences for the audience, e.g. moral shock or disgust, dissociation from the protagonist, feeling hurt or ‘put out’. Extradiegetic impoliteness, one of the key characteristics of McEwan’s fiction, offers an alternative to the literary concept of “a secret communion of the author and reader” (Booth 1961), describing an ideal connection, or good rapport, between these two participants of fictional communication. This book aims to unite literary scholars and linguists in the debate on the benefits of combining pragmatics and stylistics in literary analysis, and it will be of interest to a wide audience in both fields.

Ausgehend vom Konzept der Mediatisierung argumentiert die Studie, dass die Beachtung grundlegender Verständlichkeitsregeln als ein strategisches Mittel zur Beeinflussung der medialen Aufmerksamkeit angesehen werden kann. Denn Verständlichkeit als journalistisches Qualitätskriterium ist Teil der Medienlogik. Wer diese Medienlogik bei der Gestaltung der eigenen Kommunikation berücksichtigt, schreibt im Sinne der Medien und entspricht journalistischen Vorstellungen darüber, was überhaupt berichterstattenswert ist und wie über entsprechende Ereignisse zu berichten ist. Grundlage zur empirischen Überprüfung dieser Annahme ist eine input-output-analytische Untersuchung von Pressemitteilungen DAX-notierter Unternehmen sowie der daraus resultierenden Berichterstattung in ausgewählten Medien.
