Literature: Reading Fiction, Poetry, and Drama

by Robert DiYanni

DiYanni's Literature: Reading Fiction, Poetry, and Drama features student-centered approaches to literature—from experience to interpretation to evaluation—and an emphasis on making connections between texts and thinking critically about literature.

Known for its clear presentation of the formal elements of literature and literary analysis, this anthology effectively balances classic, modern, and contemporary works across the three major genres, blending well-known writers with a diverse gathering of newer, international figures. This literary breadth is supplemented by extensive coverage of writing about literature, making this book an excellent text for introduction to literature courses as well as literature-based composition courses.

Literature: Why It Matters (Why It Matters)

by Robert Eaglestone

‘Facts alone are wanted in life,’ exclaims Mr Gradgrind at the beginning of Dickens’ Hard Times. Literature is not about facts alone, and – despite two and a half thousand years of arguments – no one can agree on what it is, or how to study it. But, argues Robert Eaglestone, it is precisely the open-ended nature of literature that makes it such a rewarding and useful subject. Eaglestone shows that studying literature can change who you are, turning you from a ‘reader’ into a ‘critic’: someone attuned to the ways we make meaning in our world. Literature is a living conversation which provides endless opportunities to rethink and reinterpret our societies and ourselves. With examples ranging from Sappho to Skyrim, this book shows how literature offers freer and deeper ways of thinking and being.

Each form of literature, called a genre, has its own characteristics. In this introduction, you can learn about the genres of literature. Prose is organized in sentences and paragraphs and does not have a regular rhythm. Fiction is prose writing that tells about imaginary characters and events. Nonfiction is prose writing that presents and explains ideas or that tells about real people, places, or events. * Poetry, whose sentences appear in lines that do not always extend across the page, often has a regular beat or rhythm. A short story is a brief form of prose fiction with characters, a setting, and a plot. It resembles longer forms of fiction in exploring an insight into life. Nonfiction is literature that deals with the real world. It tells the story of actual events or people and addresses the world of ideas. Poetry is literature written in verse. Because the form uses comparatively few words, poets choose highly concise and emotionally packed language to convey their ideas. In addition, poetry includes rhythm and rhyme to make the writing musical. Drama tells a story through the words and actions of actors who impersonate the characters on stage. In the text of a drama, the characters' words are called the dialogue.

Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry and Drama

by X. J. Kennedy Dana Gioia

Literature, in the widest sense, is just about anything written. It is even what you receive in the mail if you send for free information about a weight-reducing plan or a motorcycle. In the sense that matters to us in this book, literature is a kind of art, usually written, which offers pleasure and illumination. We say it is usually written, for we have an oral literature, too. Few would deny the name of literature to "Bonny Barbara Allan" and other immortal folk ballads, though they were not set down in writing until centuries after they were originated.
