Du Bois’s 1897 American Negro Academy address, “The Conservation of Races.” Chandler approaches Du Bois as a generative and original philosophical thinker-writer on the status and historical implication of matters of human difference, both the fact of and the very idea thereof. Chandler proposes both a close reading of Du Bois’s engagement of the concept of so-called race and a deep meditation on Du Bois’s conceptualization of historicity in general. He elaborates on the way Du Bois’s thought in this address can give an account of the organization of the historicity that yields the emergence of something like the African American, at once with its own internal dimensions and yet also as an originary articulation of forces and possibilities that have world historical implications. Chandler refigures Du Bois’s thought as a vital theoretical resource for rethinking our concepts of differences among humans and, so too, our understanding of modern historicity itself.

In this book, Kristina Mendicino analyzes a selection of canonical texts that reflect profound concern with novelty and its apparent contrary, the eternal return of the same, including Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Baudelaire's lyric and prose poetry, and Marx and Engels's Communist Manifesto. She also addresses Eternity by the Stars by Louis-Auguste Blanqui, who is less well known and often underestimated in considerations of his significance for revolutionary political theory.Mendicino argues that the notion of a novum cannot be understood without attentiveness to the language of announcement, not least of all because the "new" has always been associated with a particular mode of linguistic performance. Through close readings of emphatically annunciatory texts, she demonstrates how the extreme possibilities of expression that they present through specific citational and rhetorical praxes render the language of announcement overdetermined and anachronistic in ways that exceed any systematic account of historical time and experience. This excess in and through language is precisely what opens hitherto unheard of alternatives for conceiving of historical temporality and political possibility.

by Narayan Dharapगेल्या सहा दशकांहून अधिक काळ सातत्याने भयकथा लिहून वाचकांना विस्मयचकित करणारे नारायण धारप यांचे ‘अनोळखी दिशा’ हे पुस्तक म्हणजे आजवर त्यांनी लिहिलेल्या निवडक भयकथांचा संग्रह आहे. नारायण धारप हे नाव आताच्या वाचन करणार्या पिढीला नवीन असलं, तरीही आपल्या रहस्यमय लेखकाने त्यांनी एक काळ गाजवला होता. गेल्या शतकातील साठच्या दशकात त्यांनी लेखनाला प्रारंभ केला आणि त्यानंतर अखेरपर्यंत ते सातत्याने लिहीत राहिले आहेत. दूरदर्शन आणि इतर प्रसारमाध्यमांची फारशी चलती नव्हती, त्या काळात सामान्य वाचक अतिशय आतुरतेने त्यांच्या लेखनाची वाट पाहत असत. नारायण धारपांच्या कथा ‘कथा’ या विकाराची अनेक रूपे घेऊन येतारत. कथानकात पुढे काय घडणार याची उत्सुकता कायम ठेवत वाचकाला आपल्या लेखनात गुंतवून ठेवणे, रहस्यमय व गूढ पद्धतीने भयाच्या तावडीत माणसे कशी सापडतात, शरीरिक व मानसिक वेदना कशी भोगतात, भूत-पिशाच्च, क्रुर पीडा देणार्या जीवनसृष्टीच्या काल्पनिक जगाचे अस्तित्व कसे जाणवते आणि दैवर शक्तीने, चमत्काराच्या कृपेने त्यातून ती कशी सुटतात याचे वर्णन अतिशय चित्तवेधक आहे. माणसाला नेहमीच कोणतेही रहस्य जाणून घेण्याच मुळातच उत्कंठा असते. जितके समाधान वाचनातून मिळते तितके दुसर्या कोणत्याही माध्यमातून मिळत नसल्यसामुळे वाचनाकडे असकर्षित झालेली नवी पिढी रहस्यमय व गूढ कथेच्या शोधात असते. वाचकांची ही भूक भागविण्याचे काम नारायण धारपांचे साहित्य करते. एकूणच मराठी साहित्यात रहस्य व गूढतेचे दालन समृद्ध करणार्या लेखकात नारायण धारपांचे स्थान वरचे आहे. धारपांच्या अद्भुत घटनांचे तर्कातीत मनोव्यापारांचे खेळ वर्णन करणार्या या कथा वाचकांना एका जागेवर खिळवून ठेवतात, हे वेगळे सांगायला नको.
