Beneath The Diamond Sky

by Christopher Wakling

A group of adventurous backpackers wander off the beaten path and into a terrifying nightmare at the hands of political extremists. As "intriguing...fast-paced and nuanced" (Newsday) and "compulsively readable" (Booklist) as his acclaimed debut, Wakling's darkly suspenseful new novel takes its young thrill-seekers to the all-too-real edge of human experience. For Kate Cox and Ethan Hughes there's no turning back. They've traded in their London nine-to-fives and family obligations for the promise of adventure in the Himalayan foothills. Once there, they join up with a small band of Western travelers and a local guide to trek through the disputed territory of Kashmir-it's an official no-go zone, and the risk is exactly the appeal. But the adventure's deepest dangers are quickly realized when the hikers are kidnapped by Muslim militants. They're suddenly reduced to helpless hostages in a world beyond their control-at the mercy of violent extremists they can't understand and an unyielding ideology they can't hope to survive. As their prospect of escape from this world of shifting allegiances and unknowable rules diminishes, Kate and Ethan face the ultimate test of will and character: They must choose between love and survival. Chilling and electrifying, Beneath the Diamond Sky combines shrewd psychological insight with striking suspense. It is at once a moving tale of the risks of escapism, a terrifying literary adventure story, and a provocative political thriller precisely for our times. - Christopher Wakling is also the author of The Immortal Part.

Beneath the Abbey Wall

by A. D. Scott

AS A DECADE OF CHANGE COMES TO A CLOSE, MURDER HITS CLOSE TO HOME IN A SMALL SCOTTISH TOWN. . . . On a dark, damp Sunday evening, a man taking a shortcut home sees a hand reaching out in supplication from a bundle of sacks. In an instant he knows something terrifying has happened. In the Highlands in the late 1950s, much of the local newspaper's success was due to Mrs. Smart, the no-nonsense office manager who kept everything and everyone in line. Her murder leaves her colleagues in shock and the Highland Gazette office in chaos. Joanne Ross, a budding reporter and shamefully separated mother, assumes Mrs. Smart's duties, but an intriguing stranger provides a distraction not only from the job and the investigation but from everything Joanne believes in. Beneath the Abbey Wall brilliantly evokes a place still torn between the safety of the past and the uncertainty of the future, when rock 'n' roll and television invaded homes, and a change in attitudes still came slowly for many. As the staff of the Highland Gazette probes the crime, they uncover secrets deeply rooted in the past, and their friend's murder becomes the perfect fodder for strife and division in the town and between her colleagues.

Beneath the American Renaissance: The Subversive Imagination in the Age of Emerson and Melville

by David S. Reynolds

Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson. In this ground-breaking work, the seven great writers of the American Renaissance are studied together in their literary and social contexts--with a particular view to showing how they assimilated and transformed into literary art the themes and images of popular culture. Their classic works--among them Moby-Dick, The Scarlet Letter, Leaves of Grass, Walden, the tales of Poe--are given strikingly original readings in the rich, often startling, context of long-neglected popular writings of the time. Reynolds especially brings to our attention a whole lost world of sensational literature: pamphlet novels that purveyed hair-raising adventure, reverend rakes, and mythic sea-monsters; gory crime books derived from real-life case histories; reform writings that dwelled on the grisly and perverse results of vice; novels, openly sold on the street, that combined intense violence with explicit eroticism. He shows how this wildly energized popular literature reflected the fantasies and aggressions of Americans in a period of rapid social change--and how it echoes throughout major American works: in the ambiguities of Melville and Hawthorne, in Poe's portrayal of psychopathic killers, in Whitman's open expression of sexuality. Reynolds finds strong traces of such popular types as the fallen woman, the sensual woman, and the feminist criminal recombined in the multifaceted heroines of Hawthorne. He shows how the experimental style and explosive imagery of the sophisticated women's rights novels of the 1850s and the feminist "literature of misery" of the 1850s and 1860s set the stage for Emily Dickinson's work--he sees in her poems closer ties to the popular culture than have previously been revealed. He demonstrates as well how common concerns with issues of religion, slavery, and workers' (as well as women's) rights resonate in the major writings. Throughout, Reynolds uses what he calls "reconstructive criticism" to reveal the social roots of literary texts and to make clear the ways in which cultural images that were crude and formless in their original state were reconstructed and put to the uses of art by the American masters. The result is a landmark study of the richest period in American literary history and a notable contribution to the theory and practice of literary criticism.
