Beyond Any Kind of God
by Jack KevorkianAlmost lost to obscurity before now, Beyond Any Kind of God gives readers a glimpse into the philosophical views of the most controversial physician of our time. Written after his life-changing voyages abroad, Kevorkian’s only philosophical book provides a compelling study of the doctor’s early views on the meaning of life, solipsism, and death. Jack (Jacob) Kevorkian was infamous in his later life for his support of doctor-assisted suicide, for which he was incarcerated for eight years. Kevorkian was a multi-talented physician, philosopher, musician, and artist, and he wrote several books and countless articles on topics ranging from medical to philosophical to political. He was a firm believer in the “right to die,” and his views made him one of the most controversial figures of recent American history. Born in Pontiac, Michigan, in 1928 to Armenian-immigrant parents, Kevorkian showed an early interest in languages and medicine. He graduated from University of Michigan Medical School in 1952, and entered the Army, later serving in the Korean War. Upon leaving the Army, Kevorkian traveled extensively, and out of these travels came the inspiration for much of his early literature, including Beyond Any Kind of God. As a pathologist, Kevorkian researched unique procedures, and he became interested in end-of-life planning and care. In 1999, he was convicted for helping over one hundred patients end their lives, and he was incarcerated for eight years. Upon release, he toured the country and continued his campaign for a patient’s right to make end-of-life decisions until his death in 2011.
Beyond Apollo
by Barry MalzbergWinner of the first John W. Campbell Memorial Award. &“A mind-bending read . . . certainly entertaining, often very funny and very thought-provoking.&” —Medium A two-man mission to Venus fails and is aborted; when it returns, the Captain is missing and the other astronaut, Harry M. Evans, is unable to explain what has happened. Or, conversely, he has too many explications; his journal of the expedition—compiled in the mental institution to which NASA has embarrassedly committed him—offers contradictory stories: he murdered the Captain, mad Venusian invaders murdered the Captain, the Captain vanished, no one was murdered and the Captain has returned in Evans&’s guise. As the explanations pyramid and the supervising psychiatrist&’s increasingly desperate efforts to get a straight story fail, it becomes apparent that Evans&’s madness and his inability to explain what happened are expressions of humanity&’s incompetence at the enormity of space exploration. &“Barry Malzberg&’s dark, bleak vision of the future is one of the most terrifying ever to come out of science fiction.&” —Robert Silverberg &“Beyond Apollo is a masterpiece; a multi-faceted rumination on repression; a virulent critique of the space program and America&’s obsession with space.&” —Science Fiction and Other Suspect Ruminations &“A light shone through a crystal. The reader never gets to see the crystal or the light, only the resulting refraction . . . a very satisfying work of post-modern science fiction.&” —Speculiction &“Veins of gold . . . a beautiful and heart-breaking book.&”—Fantasy and Science Fiction &“Written with wit . . . the most original and pleasing SF novel of the last five years.&”—Brian Aldiss, New Review
Beyond Autonomy in Eighteenth-Century British and German Aesthetics (Routledge Studies in Eighteenth-Century Philosophy)
by Karl AxelssonThis volume re-examines traditional interpretations of the rise of modern aesthetics in eighteenth-century Britain and Germany. It provides a new account that connects aesthetic experience with morality, science, and political society. In doing so, it challenges long-standing teleological narratives that emphasize disinterestedness and the separation of aesthetics from moral, cognitive, and political interests. The chapters are divided into three thematic parts. The chapters in Part I demonstrate the heteronomy of eighteenth-century British aesthetics. They chart the evolution of aesthetic concepts and discuss the ethical and political significance of the aesthetic theories of several key figures: namely, the third Earl of Shaftesbury, David Hume, and Adam Smith. Part II explores the ways in which eighteenth-century German, and German-oriented, thinkers examine aesthetic experience and moral concerns, and relate to the work of their British counterparts. The chapters here cover the work of Kant, Moses Mendelssohn, Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten, and Madame de Staël. Finally, Part III explores the interrelation of science, aesthetics, and a new model of society in the work of Goethe, Johann Wilhelm Ritter, Friedrich Hölderlin, and William Hazlitt, among others. This volume develops unique discussions of the rise of aesthetic autonomy in the eighteenth century. In bringing together well-known scholars working on British and German eighteenth-century aesthetics, philosophy, and literature, it will appeal to scholars and advanced students in a range of disciplines who are interested in this topic.
Beyond The Barrier of Space
by Pel Torro Lionel Fanthorpe Patricia FanthorpePersonality has a physical basis and what is in itself bio-chemical can be modified by bio-chemical means. The new formula could dissolve a man's personality into a state of plasticity from which almost any kind of temperament could be re-fashioned. Worlds were at war. With technologies resting in an uneasy equilibrium victory or defeat depended upon morale. Morale depended upon personality. Personality depended upon the new formula! A weapon as insidious as that could work both ways. An unscrupulous government could use it to control men's minds to a degree which had never been possible before. The Automatic State lay just around the corner. Bill Stokes and his underground movement were faced with a savage dilemma. Disloyalty could mean defeat for their own people, but to keep faith with the present regime could lead to the end of individual human independence.

Beyond Belief: Poems
by John KoetheA rich, meditative new collection of poetry from John Koethe, the "necessary and great poet" (Hyperallergic). It’s presumptuous, but if you’re reading this youProbably know my usual obsessions and preoccupations:The “world”—both the word and what it stands for—and time,Which is or isn’t real, depending on my mood. I’ve alwaysHated poems about philosophy, and I hope I still do,But since I don’t know what that means anymore, here I am,Musing on my ends and my beginnings one more time . . .In Beyond Belief, John Koethe poses eternal and essential questions about the rhythms of time, language and literature, and “the space between attention and belief.” The eleventh book of poetry from America’s philosopher-poet is an intimate, searching collection that gives life to the mundane and lends words to our most interior and abstract musings. What makes a life real? Words on a page, the accumulation of moments and memories, or nothing at all? And what is a life worth? Locked inside, have we lost our future and its promises or are we merely pressed to inhabit our present and ourselves? The award-winning poet invites us into his consideration of our world, as “An ordinary person sitting on his balcony on a summer afternoon, / Waiting patiently for someone to explain it to and meanwhile / Living quietly in his imagination, imagining the afterlife.”

Beyond Blaxploitation (Contemporary Approaches to Film and Media Series)
by Gerald R. Butters Jr. Novotny LawrenceBeyond Blaxploitation, the first book-length anthology of scholarly work on blaxploitation film, sustains the momentum that blaxploitation scholarship has recently gained, giving the films an even more prominent place in cinema history. This volume is made up of eleven essays employing historical and theoretical methodologies in the examination of spectatorship, marketing, melodrama, the transition of novel to screenplay, and racial politics and identity, among other significant topics. In doing so, the book fills a substantial gap that exists in the black cinematic narrative and, more broadly, in film history. Beyond Blaxploitation is divided into three sections that feature original essays on a variety of canonical blaxploitation films and others that either influenced the movement or in some form represent a significant extension of it. The first section titled, “From Pioneer to Precursor to Blaxploitation,” centers on three films—Cotton Comes to Harlem, Watermelon Man, and Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song—that ignited the African American film cycle. The second section, “The Canon and the Not so Canon,” is dedicated to forging alternative considerations of some of the most highly regarded blaxploitation films, while also bringing attention to lesser-known films in the movement. The final section, “Was, Is, or Isn’t Blaxploitation,” includes four essays that offer significant insights on films that are generally associated with blaxploitation but contest traditional definitions of the movement. Moreover, this section features chapters that address industrial factors that led to the creation of blaxploitation cinema and highlight the limitations of the term itself. Beyond Blaxploitation is a much-needed pedagogical tool, informing film scholars, critics, and fans alike, about blaxploitation’s richness and complexity.

Beyond Bolaño: The Global Latin American Novel (Literature Now)
by Héctor HoyosThrough a comparative analysis of the novels of Roberto Bolaño and the fictional work of César Aira, Mario Bellatin, Diamela Eltit, Chico Buarque, Alberto Fuguet, and Fernando Vallejo, among other leading authors, Héctor Hoyos defines and explores new trends in how we read and write in a globalized era. Calling attention to fresh innovations in form, voice, perspective, and representation, he also affirms the lead role of Latin American authors in reshaping world literature. Focusing on post-1989 Latin American novels and their representation of globalization, Hoyos considers the narrative techniques and aesthetic choices Latin American authors make to assimilate the conflicting forces at work in our increasingly interconnected world. Challenging the assumption that globalization leads to cultural homogenization, he identifies the rich textual strategies that estrange and re-mediate power relations both within literary canons and across global cultural hegemonies. Hoyos shines a light on the unique, avant-garde phenomena that animate these works, such as modeling literary circuits after the dynamics of the art world, imagining counterfactual "Nazi" histories, exposing the limits of escapist narratives, and formulating textual forms that resist worldwide literary consumerism. These experiments help reconfigure received ideas about global culture and advance new, creative articulations of world consciousness.
