[...] As always, Nunez delivers a unique and riveting perspective on Caribbean life as well as immigrant life in general."--The New York Amsterdam News"Many moments of elegant, overarching insight bind the personal to the collective past."--New York Times Book Review"If I wore a hat, I'd tip it to novelist Elizabeth Nunez . . . with Boundaries, her eighth work, the storyteller is in fine form . . . [it] is timely and provocative -- and it's written with such vivid prose that, despite the bittersweet ending, you'll step away from this refreshing take on contemporary publishing with a smile."--Essence"In Nunez's latest, the author further explores immigrant life, a life where a hard-working woman can progress up the corporate ladder, buy an apartment in a soon-to-be trendy neighborhood, and still be plagued by outsider's angst . . . A thoughtful literary novel exploring the shadows of cultural identity and the mirage of assimilation."--Kirkus Reviews"A quiet, sensitive portrait. . . This work covers a lot of ground, from mother-daughter and male-female relationships to the tensions between immigrants and the American born."--Library Journal"Nunez deftly dissects the immigrant experience in light of cultural traditions that impact family roles, professional obligations, and romantic opportunities."--Booklist"Elizabeth Nunez is one of the finest and most necessary voices in contemporary American and Caribbean fiction."--Colum McCann, author of Let the Great World SpinIn an age of reality TV, a husband and wife cling to Victorian notions of privacy, though doing so threatens the life of the wife. Their daughter Anna yearns for her mother's unguarded affection, and eventually learns there is value in restraint. Boundaries of Violence in Early Modern England (Routledge Advances in Theatre & Performance Studies)

by Matthew Carter Samantha Dressel

This book explores the possibilities and limitations of violence on the Early Modern stage and in the Early Modern world. This collection is divided into three sections: History-cal Violence, (Un)Comic Violence, and Revenge Violence. This division allows scholars to easily find intertextual materials; comic violence may function similarly across multiple comedies but is vastly different from most tragic violence. While the source texts move beyond Shakespeare, this book follows the classic division of Shakespeare’s plays into history, comedy, and tragedy. Each section of the book contains one chapter engaging with modern dramatic practice along with several that take textual or historical approaches. This wide-ranging approach means that the book will be appropriate both for specialists in Early Modern violence who are looking across multiple perspectives, and for students or scholars researching texts or approaches.

Boundary

by Zofia Nalkowska

Available for the first time in English, Zofia Nalkowska's Boundary was originally published as Granica in Poland in 1935. The modernist novel was widely discussed upon its publication and praised for its psychological realism and stylistic and compositional artistry. Over the years, it has been translated into several languages and made into a feature film, and remains a standard text in the Polish secondary school curriculum. Nalkowska was a pioneer of feminist fiction in Central Europe. Her observation of inequality in the treatment of men and women is at the heart of Boundary, which explores a transgressive love affair and its repercussions. She perceived that men—especially of the upper and middle classes—felt free to have sexual relations with lower class women, whereas it was not socially acceptable for women of any class to have sexual relations outside of marriage, or even admit to enjoying sex. This meant that working class women were seduced and then abandoned when they became pregnant, leaving them with the stigma of illegitimate children and the problem of finding work. Meanwhile, the higher class wives found themselves betrayed. While Boundary can be interpreted as a novel about power and its abuses, it contains several dimensions—philosophical, emotional, existential, moral—that render it a consummate piece of social criticism. An elegantly composed work of imaginative fiction, it does not preach or offer solutions. Ursula Phillips's excellent translation will interest readers of early twentieth century novels and scholars and students of Polish literature, feminist studies, and European modernism.

Underneath the ice of the Frozen Shores lies the Genesis, the vessel of the Founders. And in its mysterious chambers, Eva will discover forbidden fictions cloaked as truth that could lead her to her twin brother&’s killer—and bring society crashing down around her . . . &“Evokes similarities to milestone end-of-the-world tales such as Sheri Tepper&’s mind-bending The Gate to Women&’s Country and S. M. Stirling&’s very satisfying series, The Change. They all immerse readers in an otherworldly environment where the usual social rules are upended in hard-to-survive ways.&” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette &“Terrell has created a unique dystopian novel set in the future, but where the people of the New North live by almost medieval rules and standards. Eva, ever the rule-following young maiden, is struggling with learning the truth about the past and how it fits into her and her people&’s future.&” —Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA)
