The Amber Shadows: A Novel

by Lucy Ribchester

During the dangerous days of World War II, Honey Deschamps is spending her days transcribing decrypted messages at Bletchley Park, when she starts to receive bizarrely coded packages. When everyone is keeping secrets, who can you trust? Bletchley Park, 1942: As World War II rages on, Honey Deschamps sits at her type-x machine, tediously transcribing decrypted signals from the German Army, doing her part to assist the British war effort. Halfway across the world, Hitler’s armies are marching into Leningrad, leaving a trail of destruction and pillaging the country’s most treasured artworks, including the famous Amber Room—the eighth wonder of the world. As reports begin filtering into Bletchley Park about the stolen loot, Honey receives a mysterious package, hand-delivered from a man that she has never seen before who claims that he works at the Park as well. The package is postmarked from Russia, and inside is a small piece of amber. It is just the first of several such packages, and when she examines them together she realizes that someone, relying on her abilities to unravel codes, is trying to tell her something. Honey can’t help but fear that the packages are a trap set by the authorities to test her loyalties—surely nothing so valuable could get through the mail during a time of war. And yet, something about the packages reminds her of stories that her brother used to tell her about her absent father, and when her brother is found brutally murdered on his way to visit Honey, she can’t help but assume that the events are connected. But at Bletchley Park, secrecy reigns supreme, and she has nowhere to turn for help….

Ambergris: City of Saints and Madmen; Shriek: An Afterword; Finch

by Jeff VanderMeer

From the author of Borne and Annihilation comes the one-volume hardcover reissue of his cult classic Ambergris Trilogy.More than twenty years ago, Jeff VanderMeer first introduced the world to the fictional city of Ambergris, a beautiful and sinister sprawling metropolis populated by artists and thieves, composers and murderers, geniuses and madmen. Ambergris bristles with intellectual fervor and religious rivalries; it thrives on cultural upheaval, and its politics are never short on intrigue, conspiracy, and even terror. There are stories within stories, mystery, mayhem, and a dark history that threatens to consume the city itself as the gray caps, the mysterious and deadly mushroom people who once ruled Ambergris and have since been driven underground, now threaten to rise again. Ultimately, the fate of Ambergris comes to lie in the hands of John Finch, a beleaguered detective with a murder on to solve and too many loyalties for one man to bear. The city is bursting at its seams, seemingly held together only by the tense, fraying tendrils of his investigation. The Ambergris trilogy is made up of three novels, each of which has become a cult classic in its own right: City of Saints and Madmen, Shriek: An Afterword, and Finch. It is a marvelous, unparalleled feat of imagination. And yet the books themselves, as celebrated and influential as they have become, have a publishing history as arcane and elaborate as Ambergris itself. Over the years they have slipped in and out of print and have never before been available as a complete trilogy. Until now.For fans both new and old of the work of Jeff VanderMeer, Ambergris is essential reading. Welcome to Ambergris. We can’t promise you’ll leave untransformed.

The Ambitious City

by Scott Thornley

The eagerly anticipated 2nd book in his MacNeice series from acclaimed World of Crime novelist Scott Thornley. If a local biker war isn't enough--7 shrink-wrapped corpses found buried between the barns on a nearby farm--MacNeice receives a desperate phone call from his old friend, the mayor of Dundurn. Dredging is nearly completed on the ambitious waterfront project the mayor hopes will revive his mini rust belt of a city, but the whole thing may be about to come off the rails: the dredgers have turned up 6 more bodies at the bottom of the lake, and 2 of them, encased in concrete, are fairly fresh. The mayor wants MacNeice to fix things, discreetly and fast. The trouble is there is another "visionary" on the loose in Dundurn, a serial killer who wants to rid the city of high-achieving young women of colour. With the body count rising, the usually super-competent Detective Superindent MacNeice feels outgunned by the bikers, outmaneuvered by the serial killer--and deeply unsettled by the connections he begins to uncover between the biker wars and the US and Canadian concrete companies who've won the bid to help build the mayor's dream. The only good thing about the crisis is that he's persuaded Fiza Aziz, the young Muslim detective who'd burned out on their last case together, to come back to the force. The bad thing: she deliberately puts herself in the killer's sights.

The Ambivalent Detective in Victorian Sensation Novels: Dickens, Braddon, and Collins (Routledge Studies in Nineteenth Century Literature)

by Sarah Yoon

The Ambivalent Detective in Victorian Sensation Novels studies how the detective as a literary character evolved through the mid-nineteenth century in England, as seen in sensation novels. In contrast to most assumptions about the English detective, Yoon argues that the detective was more often tolerated than admired following the establishment of professional detectives in the London Metropolitan Police Force in 1842. Through studying the historical and literary contexts between the 1840s to the 1860s, Yoon argues that the detective was seen as a suspicious, even mistrusted and disdained, figure who was nonetheless viewed as necessary to combat rising levels of crime. The detective as a literary character responded to the often contradictory values and aspirations of the middle class, representing an independent masculinity and laying claim to scientific authority. This study surveys novels by Charles Dickens, Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and Wilkie Collins, alongside lesser-known writers like William Russell, James Redding Ware (pseudonym Andrew Forrester), and William Stephens Hayward. This book contributes to the study of mid-nineteenth-century Victorian culture and connects with broader studies of the detective fiction genre.

Ambush At Osirak: A Novel

by Herbert Crowder

From the book: "The Middle East is going critical," were the President's words as he briefed David Llewellyn, an experienced intelligence agent, on his assignment as special envoy to Jerusalem. This land of violent passions and hatreds is again at the flash point, with a dozen potential fuses ready to set it off. But this time nuclear war is the threat, and the United States is caught in the middle. Everything revolves around the Osirak atomic reactor in Iraq, built near the ruins of Babylon. Capable of producing nuclear weapons, the reactor complex was knocked out by Israeli bombs in 1981; now it has been rebuilt. The Israelis target it for destruction again; Operation Fiery Furnace, using F-15E Strike Eagles, is in the final countdown. But this time the Osirak reactor complex is protected by a secret new Soviet surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, the capabilities of which exceed the most terrifying of a fighter pilot's nightmares. Brastov, the chief Russian military advisor to Iraq, will use these missiles as the centerpiece of a plot to checkmate Israel. Llewellyn arrives in Israel and is plunged headlong into this crucial confrontation. He immediately meets the beautiful and mysterious sabra, Daniella Zadik, and she soon becomes his lover. Or is she a Mossad agent assigned to spy on him? Then there is the enigmatic Martin Singer. Is he a dedicated idealist or a cold-blooded murderer and double-agent? As the crisis builds and planes to Osirak are launched, David's brother Richy becomes an innocent victim of the international intrigue. An expert on advanced airborne radar, he is flying in a Saudi Arabian AWACS as an Israeli F-15 closes in for the kill. In one of the most exciting flying scenes ever written, the cumbersome AWACS takes on an AIM-7F Sparrow missile, in a seemingly impossible attempt to defeat the weapon's attack. The Israeli/Iraqi conflict in the air moves to a shocking and unexpected conclusion, while David's attempts to plug a leak in the Embassy lead him to evidence of an even more devastating plot. Ambush at Osirak is a brilliant thriller - a complex, multi-layered story of espionage, based on political realities and existing technologies. Descriptions of airplanes, guided missiles and radar have more than just the ring of authenticity, for the author is an expert in the field. This book is a page-turner, and a must for fans of the military thriller.
