The Infernal Device and Others (Professor Moriarty Novels)

by Michael Kurland

Since their original appearance more than two decades ago, Michael Kurland's two novels featuring Professor James Moriarty--The Infernal Device and Death by Gaslight--have been among the most acclaimed of the works based on the characters first introduced by Authur Conan Doyle. In Doyle's original stories, Professor Moriarty is the bete noire of Sherlock Holmes, who deems the professor his mental equivalent and ethical opposite, declares him "the Napoleon of Crime, " and wrestles him seemingly to their mutual deaths at Reichenbach Falls. But indeed there are two sides to every story, and while Moriarty may not always tread strictly on the side of the law, he is also, in these novels, not quite about the person that Holmes and Watson made him out to be. In Kurland's fictions about Moriarty, the truth is finally revealed:The Infernal Device--A dangerous adversary seeking to topple the British monarchy places Moriarty in mortal jeopardy, forcing him to collaborate with his nemesis Sherlock Holmes.Death by Gaslight--A serial killer is stalking the cream of England's aristocracy, baffling both the police and Sherlock Holmes and leaving the powers in charge to play one last desperate card: Professor Moriarty. The Paradol Paradox--The first new Moriarty story in almost twenty years, it has never before appeared in print.Brilliantly and vividly evoking late Victorian England in all its facets, this first-ever omnibus of the adventures of Proefssor James Moriarty will delight longtime fans as well as readers new to the milieu.

Infernal Night: An Original Short Story

by Heather Graham F. Paul Wilson

In this short story from the New York Times bestselling thriller anthology FaceOff, bestselling authors Heather Graham and F. Paul Wilson - along with their popular series characters Michael Quinn and Repairman Jack - team up for the first time ever. Jules Chastain, the last surviving member of a wealthy New Orleans family, has a problem. And he's hired Repairman Jack to fix it. It seems that Chastain 'appropriated' an artefact from a fellow collector, Madame de Medici, and she wants it back. But the item - an ancient ring - is located somewhere in the family mausoleum and Chastain is too terrified of the wrath of his enemies to even leave his house to look for it. Meanwhile, Michael Quinn, himself a bit of an independent contractor, is waiting in the mausoleum when Jack arrives. And it's Quinn - whose day job at The Cheshire Cat curiosity shop in New Orleans has made him familiar with mystical objects - who tells Jack that they are dealing with more than just a ring. They're dealing with one of the Seven Infernals. Which means a simple retrieval job just got much more dangerous. The Infernals: A Samuel Johnson Tale (The Samuel Johnson Series #2)

by John Connolly

From New York Times bestselling author John Connolly, a wonderfully strange and brilliant novel about a boy, his dog, and their struggle to escape the wrath of demons. Young Samuel Johnson is in trouble. Not only is his eyesight so poor that he mistakenly asks out a letter box on a date, but an angry demon is seeking revenge for Samuel's part in foiling the invasion of Earth by the forces of evil. It wants to get its claws on Samuel, and when Samuel and his faithful dachshund, Boswell, are pulled through a portal into the dark realm, the home of the Infernals, it gets its chance. But catching Samuel is not going to be easy, for the Infernals have not reckoned on the bravery and cleverness of a boy and his dog, or the loyalty of Samuel's friend, the hapless demon Nurd, or the presence of two clueless policemen and the unlucky, if cheerfully optimistic, driver of an ice-cream van. Most of all, no one has planned on the intervention of an unexpected band of little men, for Samuel and Boswell are not the only inhabitants of Earth who have found themselves in the underworld. If you thought demons were frightening, just wait until you meet Mr. Merryweather's Elves. . . .
