Pike
by Benjamin WhitmerThe acclaimed debut from the author of Cry Father, nominated for France's most prestigious crime fiction award, is a "relentlessly visceral" (Seattle Examiner) story of fatherhood and redemption with the sharp edge of a thriller and a dark heart that "easily rivals Larry Brown's most renowned novels" (Spinetingler Magazine).Douglas Pike is no longer the murderous hustler of his youth, but he's certainly no kinder. He works odd jobs, just living out his life in Appalachia with his partner Rory, hemming in his demons the best he can. His best seems just good enough until his estranged daughter overdoses, and he takes in his twelve-year-old granddaughter, Wendy. Just as the two are beginning to forge a relationship, a dirty cop kills a black man and, while on hiatus from the force, takes an unhealthy interest in Wendy. Pike and Rory head to Cincinnati to learn what they can about the death of Pike's daughter and the crooked cop, three evenly matched predators circling a human wilderness of junkie squats, roadhouse bars, and homeless Vietnam vet encampments. Now featuring extended excerpts from Cry Father, the novel LitReactor called "a gut punch of raw storytelling power...absolutely uncompromising," Benjamin Whitmer's inimitable literary voice is a tour de force infused with acerbic wit and keen wisdom about the flawed nature of humanity.

But everything is ruined when George comes to a shocking realization: He is just too good-hearted to be a thief! In order to gain their freedom, George and Tabitha must pull the biggest heist the school has ever seen and reveal their true colors not as thieves, but as kind (and, okay, mischievous) kids.

Pillar of Fire
by R. R. IrvineNamed after a Mormon saint, Moroni may be Salt Lake City's only Gentile private eye still maintaining uneasy contact with the Church of Latter-day Saints. His eighth case finds the former pro football player reluctantly accepting a charge from one of the church leaders to investigate the enigmatic, self-effacing faith healer Jason Thurgood. Traveler's commission takes him downwind of the old atomic testing sites to the desolate southwest corner of Utah, commonly known as cult country because of the longtime activity of various polygamists and self-proclaimed prophets there. Currently the area is under the sway of Moroni's Children, a cult headed by ruthless, power-hungry Orrin Porter. At the same time, Moroni's father and partner, Martin, is working on a missing persons case involving the young mentally-handicapped son of an old friend just across the border in Nevada. Oddly, the two cases begin to converge, and the Travelers realize that the superficial answers they seek mask darker, more complex forces at work.
Pillow
by Andrew BattershillMost of the things Pillow really liked to do were obviously morally wrong. He wasn't an idiot; clearly it was wrong to punch people in the face for money. But there had been an art to it, and it had been thrilling and thoughtful for him. The zoo was also evil, a jail for animals who'd committed no crimes, but he just loved it. The way Pillow figured it, love wasn't about goodness, it wasn't about being right, loving the very best person, or having the most ethical fun. Love was about being alone and making some decisions. Pillow loves animals. Especially giraffes. That's why he chooses the zoo for the drug drop-offs he does as a low-level enforcer for the mob. Which happens to be run by André Breton and the Surrealists, like Gwynn Apollinaire, Louise Aragon and Georges Bataille. A gentle soul, Pillow doesn't love his life of crime. But he isn't cut out for much else, what with all the punches to the head he took as a professional boxer. And now that he's accidentally but sort of happily knocked up his neighbour, Emily, he wants to get out and go straight. So when an antique-coin heist goes awry, Pillow sees his chance to make one last big score. But it's hard to outwit a Surrealist, especially when you can't always think so clearly. He soon finds himself kneedeep in murder and morphine, kidnapping a pseudo-priest and doing some fancy footwork around a pair of corrupt cops. With a dark wink of the teeth and a wet fish to the heart, Pillow is literary crime fiction that punches above its weight.

Pillow Stalk (A Madison Night Mystery #1)
by Diane Vallere“A cozy little mystery that . . . soon draws the reader into Madison’s mid-century modern fantasy world of fashion, movies, friendship, loyalty, and violence” (New York Journal of Books). Interior decorator Madison Night might look like a throwback to the sixties, but as business owner and landlord, she proves that independent women can have it all. The local detective connects the new crime to a twenty-year-old cold case, and Madison’s long-trusted contractor emerges as the leading suspect. As the body count piles up, Madison uncovers a Soviet spy, a campaign to destroy all Doris Day movies, and six minutes of film that will change her life forever. “If you are looking for an unconventional mystery with a snarky, no-nonsense main character, this is it . . . Instead of clashing, humor and danger meld perfectly, and there is a cliffhanger that will make your jaw drop.” —RT Book Reviews
