The Problem of the Missing Miss: A Mystery Novel (The Charles Dodgson and Arthur Conan Doyle Mysteries #1)
by Roberta RogowBy the English seaside, two literary legends team up to find a young lady who has disappeared Once a playground for the British nobility, by the mid-1880s Brighton has become a haven for middle-class vacationers. Shabbier than it was, and darker around the edges, it is nonetheless a fitting place for a young doctor&’s honeymoon. But no sooner has Arthur Conan Doyle stepped off the train than he encounters a mystery. A teenage girl has vanished from the railway terminal, and the elderly Reverend Dodgson—better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll—is searching for her. Doyle will do whatever it takes to rescue the missing miss from the clutches of a coastal criminal, even if it means putting his honeymoon in danger. In Sherlock Holmes and Alice in Wonderland, Arthur Conan Doyle and Lewis Carroll created two of Victorian England&’s most remarkable characters, but neither could ever have imagined the trouble they would find on Brighton Pier.
The Problem of the Spiteful Spiritualist (The Charles Dodgson and Arthur Conan Doyle Mysteries #2)
by Roberta RogowThe creators of Sherlock Holmes and Alice in Wonderland unite to solve a sea captain&’s murder in a historical mystery &“that will appeal to Anne Perry fans&” (Booklist). The reverend Charles Dodgson comes to Portsmouth hoping for rest, relaxation, and a few days&’ peace in the company of his friend Arthur Conan Doyle, physician and aspiring author of mysteries. But within a minute of their reunion, Doyle is talking about murder. One of his patients, a gout-ridden ex-sailor, has dropped dead in his study, and Doyle is not convinced by the coroner&’s verdict of natural causes. Besides being the author of Alice in Wonderland, Dodgson is a renowned mathematician, and Doyle begs him to use his deductive brilliance to find the man who snuffed out the old sea dog. When an Indian raja arrives to accuse the dead man of stealing treasures from India, a local mystic volunteers to help unravel the case. Doyle and Dodgson are wary of taking help from a psychic, but they will soon find that it may take more than logic to solve this case.
The Problem of the Surly Servant (The Charles Dodgson and Arthur Conan Doyle Mysteries #5)
by Roberta RogowAt Oxford, a rash of crime puts Dodgson under suspicion of murder The world of academia is hardly a hotbed of crime. And although scholars at the University of Oxford may debate the assassination of Caesar or the execution of Socrates, a modern criminal has no place within the school&’s walls. And yet, as the reverend Charles Dodgson is horrified to learn, there is a thief within the college of Christ Church. The wine cellar has been ransacked, the faculty has been robbed, and a female student is being threatened by a blackmailer. It falls to Dodgson—better known as Lewis Carroll—to unmask the thief with the help of his dear friend Arthur Conan Doyle. The campus crimes quickly escalate until the university&’s hallowed halls are stained with blood. When suspicion of murder falls at Dodgson&’s feet, it is up to Doyle to clear his friend&’s name—with the brilliance and style befitting the man who created Sherlock Holmes.
The Problem of the Wire Cage: A Gideon Fell Mystery (An American Mystery Classic #0)
by John Dickson CarrDeath and tennis meet in one of impossible crime master John Dickson Carr’s most memorable cases. John Dickson Carr is famous for his puzzling “impossible crime” plots, in which corpses are discovered in scenarios that seem to lack any logical explanation, concealing clues as to how the murder was committed and how the body arrived in its current setting. Among all of Carr’s ingenious crime scenes, the present case is one of his best known: a dead man is found strangled in the middle of a clay tennis court, just after a storm. In the damp dirt, there is one set of footsteps—his own—leading back to the grass; the court is otherwise untouched. There are no trees above from which the body may have fallen and no other visible means by which it may have been transported to its final resting place. Before determining the perpetrator of the strangulation, the local authorities are first confronted by the utter implausibility of the location—two interlocking questions puzzling enough to stump even the most seasoned inspector. The bafflement is reaching a harried volley by the time amateur sleuth Dr. Gideon Fell gets involved, but he soon shows that the knotted plot is no match for his deductive powers. Before he can serve up a dazzling explanation of whodunnit, though, Fell will have to sort through a confounding set of clues in search of a diabolical killer and a bizarre murder method. Reissued for the first time this century, The Problem of the Wire Cage is an atmospheric and amusing Golden Age mystery with a memorable puzzle at its center. It’s sure to please long-time fans of John Dickson Carr and is also a great entry point into his beloved Gideon Fell series.
The Problem with Murmur Lee
by Connie May FowlerAs a new year dawns over the island of Iris Haven, Murmur Lee Harp and her lover, Billy, go for a romantic sail without a care in the world. The evening comes to an abrupt halt when Murmur Lee discovers that she has drowned—but by whose hand?—in the Iris Haven river. Grief-stricken and haunted by the mysteries surrounding her death, Murmur Lee’s circle of friends sets out to discover what really happened to her, and in the process they learn as much about her failings and triumphs as their own. After years of self-exile in the North, Charlee Mudd returns to set her best friend’s affairs in order, only to confront her own ghosts. Edith Piaf, a former marine whose sex change at the age of sixty-two Murmur Lee supported unquestioningly, must find the confidence to carry on without the encouragement of her friend. Lonely widower Dr. Zachary Klein plummets into the depths of depression at the loss of the second woman he has ever loved. As for Murmur Lee—who lived her entire life on an island named by her great-great grandfather in honor of the Greek goddess who receives the souls of dying women—in death she experiences her own journey as she is plunged into her familial past and discovers the truth about who she really is. With poignancy and humor Fowler weaves the voices of Murmur and her friends into a compelling narrative. Part family saga, part murder mystery, The Problem with Murmur Lee is Fowler’s most rewarding and engrossing work yet.
El problema final
by Arturo Pérez-ReverteLA NUEVA NOVELA DE ARTURO PÉREZ-REVERTE Un crimen imposible. The Procedure (Dr. Earl Garnet #3)
by Peter Clement"Heartpounding suspense," hailed Entertainment Weekly of Peter Clement's first medical thriller, Lethal Practice. Now the former ER physician has done it again--combining his technical expertise with a page-burning plot to create a chillingly plausible novel of suspense. With authentic detail and a surgeon's precision, Clement captures the tense, electrifying atmosphere of a big city hospital turned into a flash point. For in Fatal Medicine, one threat is more dangerous than contagion: the threat of human beings deciding who should live and who should die. . . . Death is a daily, sometimes hourly, occurrence at St. Vincent's Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Now, in his pressure cooker career, Dr. Earl Garnet has broken the cardinal rule of modern medicine: he publicly blames a powerful HMO for practicing "no-fault murder" in the death of an eighteen-month-old baby. The HMO swiftly strikes back, igniting a debilitating boycott of the hospital. But after several accidents nearly cost patients their lives, the true bloodletting begins. A doctor is found sprawled out in the parking lot, his throat cut ear to ear. Blamed for instigating the chaos, Earl Garnet knows that he faces more than a deadly power play. The doctor may have uncovered a conspiracy reaching from the halls of one of the nation's most influential HMOs to a small, experimental clinic in Mexico, where yet another of his patients went for treatment and disappeared. To find answers, Garnet must wade deep into the murky, surreal workings of today's health care industry. Smart, tough, crackling with suspense, and vivid in its hospital setting, this visionary novel instantly places Peter Clement in the distinguished company of Michael Palmer and Robin Cook. Make no mistake: The Procedure is the work of a first-rate physician and an absolutely brilliant storyteller.
