The Doll's House: A Novel (Nathaniel Drinkwater Ser. #5)

by Tania Carver

The new psychological thriller in Tania Carver's harrowing crime series--and one that delivers a surprise unlike any other in modern detective fiction. From the outside, the house was unremarkable. Just one of many on an ordinary, suburban estate. But inside was a different matter. With pink ribbons and pink walls, stuffed toy animals everywhere and a dining table laid out for a tea party, it was a doll's house. The doll was sitting at the table. Life size, with blonde, pigtailed hair and rosy red cheeks, dressed in her best pink party dress. Her finger and thumb curled round the handle of a fine china teacup. An adult woman. Covered in blood. Eviscerated. Dead. In all his years on the force, Detective Inspector Phil Brennan of the Major Incident Squad has never encountered a scene like it. As he investigates he uncovers more bizarre revelations and knows that he must act fast; the next murder has already been planned and the victim is closer to home that he realizes . . .

The Doll-Master: And Other Tales of Terror

by Joyce Carol Oates

As he grows older, he begins to collect &“found dolls&” from surrounding neighborhoods . . . each with its own sinister significance. In &“Gun Accident,&” a teenage girl is delighted to house-sit for her favorite teacher, until an intruder forces his way inside—changing more than one life forever. The collection closes with the taut tale of a mystery bookstore owner whose designs on a rare bookshop in scenic New Hampshire devolve into a menacing game with real-life consequences. &“At the heart of each story is a predator-prey relationship, and what makes them so terrifying is that most of us can easily picture ourselves as the prey, at least at some time during our lives&” (Minneapolis Star-Tribune). &“Everything she writes, in whatever genre, has an air of dread, because she deals in vulnerabilities and inevitabilities, in the desperate needs that drive people . . . to their fates. A sense of helplessness is the essence of horror, and Oates conveys that feeling as well as any writer around.&” —Terrence Rafferty, The New York Times Book Review &“One of the stranger parts of the human condition may be our deep fascination, and at times troubling exploration, of the darker aspects of our nature . . . No other author explores the ugly, and at times, blazingly unapologetic underbelly of these impulses quite like Joyce Carol Oates in The Doll-Master.&” —Pittsburgh Post-Gazette &“In her new collection . . . [Oates] relishes moments of gothic melodrama, while rooting them firmly in grindingly ordinary American lives.&” —The Guardian &“Oates convincingly demonstrates her mastery of the macabre with this superlative story collection . . . This devil&’s half-dozen of dread and suspense is a must read.&” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

The Dollhouse: A Novel

by Fiona Davis

Enter the lush world of 1950s New York City, where a generation of aspiring models, secretaries, and editors live side by side in the glamorous Barbizon Hotel for Women while attempting to claw their way to fairy-tale success in this debut novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Lions of Fifth Avenue.&“Rich both in twists and period detail, this tale of big-city ambition is impossible to put down.&”—People When she arrives at the famed Barbizon Hotel in 1952, secretarial school enrollment in hand, Darby McLaughlin is everything her modeling agency hall mates aren't: plain, self-conscious, homesick, and utterly convinced she doesn't belong—a notion the models do nothing to disabuse. Yet when Darby befriends Esme, a Barbizon maid, she's introduced to an entirely new side of New York City: seedy downtown jazz clubs where the music is as addictive as the heroin that's used there, the startling sounds of bebop, and even the possibility of romance. Over half a century later, the Barbizon's gone condo and most of its long-ago guests are forgotten. But rumors of Darby's involvement in a deadly skirmish with a hotel maid back in 1952 haunt the halls of the building as surely as the melancholy music that floats from the elderly woman's rent-controlled apartment. It's a combination too intoxicating for journalist Rose Lewin, Darby's upstairs neighbor, to resist—not to mention the perfect distraction from her own imploding personal life. Yet as Rose's obsession deepens, the ethics of her investigation become increasingly murky, and neither woman will remain unchanged when the shocking truth is finally revealed.

The Dollmaker's Daughters

by Abigail Padgett

Warning: many words in French, Cajun dialect, Spanish, Celtic Irish, and Latin. This one keeps you guessing until the end. Characters from previous books are incorporated and their personalities are further developed. A young teen girl is found in trauma shock at a Goth nightclub near Bo's beachfront home. The girl has a lovely doll attached to her wrist and neck by chains. She calls the doll Kimmy, and knows that it is important but has no idea why. Bo feels a kinship to the girl, knowing that without careful handling (which also means going against Madge Aldenhoven's constant orders, the girl will develop a mental illness. Bo and Andy LaMarche's relationship continues to develop. His teen niece comes to visit from the bayous and brings a freshness with her Cajun vocabulary and outgoing personality. Estrella gives birth near the end of the book. There is no hint that this is the end of the series. The Doom Campaign

by Mary McMullen

“Hey, Red!” It was the sort of casual greeting someone might toss out a car window at a red-haired woman. But Letty Garth had been wearing a black bell of a hat pulled down over her lovely bronze mane. And Letty Garth was not just another red-haired woman. That voice floating across a wintry New York night was only the beginning. Whoever it belonged to was trying to destroy Garth Goss and Bord, the hot young agency that turned heads all the way down Madison Avenue. It was a one-man Doom Campaign with GGB as a test market and Letty Garth as the target. What was worse, Letty Garth had a pretty good idea of who was behind it. But she hadn’t got to the top by telling all she knew, and she certainly wasn’t going to start now, even when mysterious pranks began costing the agency millions in lost billings. This was her problem and like every other problem in her glamorous life, Letty Garth would find a way to deal with it. She always had. So far. There are two more mysteries by Mary McMullen in Bookshare's library. Look for: A Grave Without Flowers and The Other Shoe.
