Star of the Sea: A Novel

by Joseph O'Connor

A New York Times Notable Book and &“thoroughly gripping&” historical mystery: On a ship packed with Irish immigrants, one passenger is a killer (People). In the bitter winter of 1847, leaving an Ireland torn by famine and injustice, the Star of the Sea sets sail for New York. On board are hundreds of refugees, some of them optimistic, many more of them desperate. Among them are a maid with a devastating secret, the bankrupt Lord Merridith accompanied by his wife and children—and a killer stalking the decks, hungry for the vengeance that will bring absolution. This journey will see many lives end, while others begin anew. Passionate loves are tenderly recalled, shirked responsibilities regretted too late, and profound relationships shockingly revealed. In this spellbinding tale of tragedy and mercy, love and healing, the farther the ship sails toward the Promised Land, the more her passengers seem moored to a past that will never let them go. &“O&’Connor&’s luscious book brews the suspense of a thriller with the scope and passion of a Victorian novel—seasoned in authentic historical detail and served up in language that is equal parts lyrical and gritty.&” —Booklist &“Engrossing . . . will hold historical fiction fans rapt.&” —Publishers Weekly

I can't bother my almost-boyfriend Jeremy with my problems -- and solving Project Photo Frame-Up is only one of them. The rest of my schedule: convincing my friends that I'm not a kleptomaniac, helping Eva nail her Serious Actress audition, and doing Jeremy a favor that makes my brain hurt. Is a Hollywood ending in sight? Not. Even. Close.

Star Spangled Murder (A\lucy Stone Mystery Ser. #11)

by Leslie Meier

Lucy Stone is in the doghouse--with her next-door neighbor, Mrs. Prudence Pratt. It seems that Kudo, the Stones' misbehaving mutt, has developed a taste for Mrs. Pratt's blue-ribbon winning chickens, as well an escape artist's talent for sneaking out. With the Fourth of July coming up, Lucy doesn't want to set off any more fireworks with the crabby Prudence. Another sign that the crazy days of summer are in full swing arrives when a group of naturists--a.k.a. nudists--descends on Tinker's Cove, skinny-dipping at the pond that borders Mrs. Pratt's property, giving her something else to complain about. Worse still, the local lobstermen are upset about poachers--and suspicion falls on Mrs. Pratt's husband and son. Then the July Fourth fireworks are canceled to protect a patch of extremely rare purple-spotted lichen, and Mrs Pratt is the victim of a hit and run. Tinker's Cove is full of suspects, but none with so personal a motive as the Stones. Their feud with Mrs. Pratt has put them at risk of losing their freedom this Independence Day--unless Lucy can start things off with a bang by catching a red, white and blue killer. . . Praise for Leslie Meier and Her Lucy Stone Mysteries "Leslie Meier writes with sparkle and warmth." --Chicago Sun Times "Leslie Meier has created such a wonderful series, I always look forward to reading the next book, and I'm never disappointed."--I Love a Mystery "A truly American version of the English 'cozy.'" --Tulsa World

She put her head on my shoulder. Her hand slid off my thigh and into my lap, paused. She kissed my ear, lingered there. ''And what are you afraid of?'' she whispered.''Afraid you'll stop,'' I said against the moist spread of her lips.''I couldn't,'' she answered, falling back on the divan, taking me with her. ''Not for a long, long time,'' she said beside me. She took my hand and guided it beneath her sweater to the warmth of bare breast. ''Feel my heart,'' she said. Star Warped

by Adam Roberts

A long time ago in galaxy far, far away a really quite good SF film, a sort of western in space, was launched. The special effects were pretty shoddy but it did have some quite good actors in it. And Mark Hammill. A second and third film that were actually the fifth and sixth films followed and they weren't quite so good but they were still quite fun (especially when the teddies got blasted by the Imperial stormtroopers). Then, the first, second and third films followed and they were actually fairly dreadful though by now the special effects were much better. And the actors were still better than average too. And Mark Hammill was too old to be in it plus his character hadn't been born yet so that was OK.A Gollancz parody was inevitable. And here it is. An epic told in six chapters. An epic of good versus evil. Of dark versus light. Of hairy co-pilots and green gurus. Of bizarre hair styles, steel bras and camp robots. An epic that starts in the middle. And that's the original!

Then the director shows Antonelli the script he considers his masterpiece-a re-imagining of Orson Welles's Citizen Kane-with a visionary film director as its hero. In this story-within-a-story, the accused reveals his version of the tragedy-the secrets of his marriage, and the ominous events that led to his wife's death. In it we see the way art can imitate life-and unmask a killer even the court can't find.

Star Witness

by Dudley W. Buffa

Attorney Joseph Antonelli tackles a case overflowing with greed and glamour, in a scintillating new thriller in the Edgar Award-nominated series. The novels of D. V. Buffa have been lauded for their "resonance that continues to play on the reader's mind" (The New York Times) and their "great intelligence and erudition" (San Jose Mercury News). But none has prepared us for the unique brilliance of this latest novel, a haunting tale of near-Fitzgeraldian eloquence, set amid the vaulting ambition and passion of Hollywood. Star Witness is about a man on trial for murder--a man recognized as one of the film industry's most successful writer-directors, a man of mythic drive and talent, and someone who looks more guilty with every passing witness. Attorney Joseph Antonelli--suave, philosophical, fearless, and cagey--takes up the director's defense for the murder of an equally famous young woman. Then the defendant shows Antonelli the script he has been working on for years, a script he considers his masterpiece: the story of a man's rags-to-riches climb to the top that recalls Orson Welles's Citizen Kane', and that includes a visionary film director as its hero. In this fascinating story-within-a-story, the accused reveals his version of the tragedy, the secrets of his relationship with the deceased, and the ominous events that led to her death. In it we see how art can imitate life-and unmask a killer even the court can't find. This is a novel about the nature of the confusing intersection of truth and fantasy dreams and desires, Star Witness is a rich tale of Hollywood, unlike any you've read in many years.

The Starboard Sea: A Novel

by Amber Dermont

"A rich, quietly artful novel that is bound for deep water, with questions of beauty, power and spiritual navigation as its main concerns. The title refers not to the right side of a boat but to the right course through life, and the immense difficulty of finding and following it."--Janet Maslin, The New York TimesA powerful first novel about life and death, friendship and love, as one young man must navigate the depths of his emotions.JASON PROSPER grew up in the elite world of Manhattan penthouses, Maine summer estates, old-boy prep schools, and exclusive sailing clubs. A smart, athletic teenager, Jason maintains a healthy, humorous disdain for the trappings of affluence, preferring to spend afternoons sailing with Cal, his best friend and boarding-school roommate. When Cal commits suicide during their junior year at Kensington Prep, Jason is devastated by the loss and transfers to Bellingham Academy. There, he meets Aidan, a fellow student with her own troubled past. They embark on a tender, awkward, deeply emotional relationship. When a major hurricane hits the New England coast, the destruction it causes brings with it another upheaval in Jason's life, forcing him to make sense of a terrible secret that has been buried by the boys he considers his friends.Set against the backdrop of the 1987 stock market collapse, The Starboard Seais an examination of the abuses of class privilege, the mutability of sexual desire, the thrill and risk of competitive sailing, and the adult cost of teenage recklessness. It is a powerful and provocative novel about a young man finding his moral center, trying to forgive himself, and accepting the gift of love.
