by Val Mcdermid"There is no one in contemporary crime fiction who has managed to combine the visceral and the humane as well as Val McDermid. . . . She's the best."--The New York Times Book Review "McDermid has a sharp ear for the dialogue and intrinsic humor of the Manchester dialect. . . . She manages, as always, to combine her wit and exuberant writing with a careful and clever plot and oodles of perceptive social observation."--The Times (London)Bodyguarding had never made it to Manchester PI Kate Brannigan's wish list. But somebody's got to pay the bills at Brannigan & Co., and if the only earner on offer is playing nursemaid to a paranoid soap star, the fast-talking, computer-loving, white-collar-crime expert has to swallow her pride and slip into something more glam than her Thai-boxing kit.Soon, however, offstage dramas overshadow the fictional storylines, culminating in the unscripted murder of the self-styled "Seer to the Stars," and Kate finds herself with more questions than answers. Star Warped
by Adam RobertsA long time ago in galaxy far, far away a really quite good SF film, a sort of western in space, was launched. The special effects were pretty shoddy but it did have some quite good actors in it. And Mark Hammill. A second and third film that were actually the fifth and sixth films followed and they weren't quite so good but they were still quite fun (especially when the teddies got blasted by the Imperial stormtroopers). Then, the first, second and third films followed and they were actually fairly dreadful though by now the special effects were much better. And the actors were still better than average too. And Mark Hammill was too old to be in it plus his character hadn't been born yet so that was OK.A Gollancz parody was inevitable. And here it is. An epic told in six chapters. An epic of good versus evil. Of dark versus light. Of hairy co-pilots and green gurus. Of bizarre hair styles, steel bras and camp robots. An epic that starts in the middle. And that's the original!

BuffaStar Witness is about a man on trial for murder-a man recognized as one of the film industry's most successful writer/ directors, a man of almost mythic drive and talent, and someone who looks more guilty with every passing witness. Attorney Joseph Antonelli-suave, philosophical, fearless-takes up the director's defense for the murder of his wife, the actress every woman wants to be and every man wants to possess. Despite Antonelli's examination of the prosecution's witnesses, the jury finds fewer and fewer reasons to doubt. Then the director shows Antonelli the script he considers his masterpiece-a re-imagining of Orson Welles's Citizen Kane-with a visionary film director as its hero. In this story-within-a-story, the accused reveals his version of the tragedy-the secrets of his marriage, and the ominous events that led to his wife's death. In it we see the way art can imitate life-and unmask a killer even the court can't find.
Star Witness
by Dudley W. BuffaAttorney Joseph Antonelli tackles a case overflowing with greed and glamour, in a scintillating new thriller in the Edgar Award-nominated series. The novels of D. V. Buffa have been lauded for their "resonance that continues to play on the reader's mind" (The New York Times) and their "great intelligence and erudition" (San Jose Mercury News). But none has prepared us for the unique brilliance of this latest novel, a haunting tale of near-Fitzgeraldian eloquence, set amid the vaulting ambition and passion of Hollywood. Star Witness is about a man on trial for murder--a man recognized as one of the film industry's most successful writer-directors, a man of mythic drive and talent, and someone who looks more guilty with every passing witness. Attorney Joseph Antonelli--suave, philosophical, fearless, and cagey--takes up the director's defense for the murder of an equally famous young woman. Then the defendant shows Antonelli the script he has been working on for years, a script he considers his masterpiece: the story of a man's rags-to-riches climb to the top that recalls Orson Welles's Citizen Kane', and that includes a visionary film director as its hero. In this fascinating story-within-a-story, the accused reveals his version of the tragedy, the secrets of his relationship with the deceased, and the ominous events that led to her death. In it we see how art can imitate life-and unmask a killer even the court can't find. This is a novel about the nature of the confusing intersection of truth and fantasy dreams and desires, Star Witness is a rich tale of Hollywood, unlike any you've read in many years.
