Behind the Red Door: A Novel
by Megan Collins&“A haunting thriller&” (PopSugar) about a woman who believes that she has a connection to a decades old kidnapping and begins a frantic investigation to find out what really happened when the victim goes missing again. When Fern Douglas sees the news about Astrid Sullivan, a thirty-four-year-old missing woman from Maine, she is positive that she knows her. Fern&’s husband is sure it&’s because of Astrid&’s famous kidnapping—and equally famous return—twenty years ago, but Fern has no memory of that, even though it happened an hour outside her New Hampshire hometown. And when Astrid appears in Fern&’s recurring nightmare, one in which a girl reaches out to her, pleading, Fern fears that it&’s not a dream at all, but a memory. Returning to her childhood home to help her father pack for a move, Fern purchases a copy of Astrid&’s recently published memoir—which may have provoked her original kidnapper to abduct her again—and as she reads through its chapters and visits the people and places within it, she discovers more evidence that she has an unsettling connection to the missing woman. With the help of her psychologist father, Fern digs deeper, hoping to find evidence that her connection to Astrid can help the police locate her. But when Fern discovers more about her own past than she ever bargained for, the disturbing truth will change both of their lives forever in this &“masterful meditation on fear&” (Mindy Mejia, author of Strike Me Down).

by Julie TathamVicki meets an old friend of her father's, Professor Hyacith, during one of her flights. The professor has heard a rumor of a valley warmed by hot springs which remains fertile throughout most of the harsh Alaskan winter. The professor plans an exploratory flight into Alaska in search of the valley and invites Vicki to go along as the flight stewardess. The cost of the flight is shared by all of the passengers, about whom the professor knows very little. The searchers find the valley, but the plane is damaged by a rough landing on the valley floor. Unable to take off or communicate with the outside world, the passengers face the horror of possibly never being rescued from the valley. The white veil shrouding the valley prevents them from signaling a rescue plane. The only way to escape is to find a way to scale the sheer walls of the valley. Escape is not the only problem since several of the passengers begin bickering almost as soon as the plane lands in the valley. Additionally, several of the passengers appear to have hidden agendas. Vicki finds an old letter dropped by one passenger which reveals that stolen crown jewels are likely to be found in the hidden valley. While the pilot works to repair the plane, Vicki races to discover the jewels and finds herself in grave danger.

Being Cool: The Work of Elmore Leonard
by Charles J. RzepkaAn in-depth look into the life and work of the man who defined "cool" for crime fiction, Elmore Leonard.Widely known as the crime fiction writer whose work led to the movies Get Shorty and Out of Sight, Elmore Leonard had a special knack for creating "cool" characters. In Being Cool, Charles J. Rzepka looks at what makes the dope-dealers, bookies, grifters, financial advisors, talent agents, shady attorneys, hookers, models, and crooked cops of Leonard's world cool. They may be nefarious, but they are also confident, skilled, and composed. And they are good at what they do. Taking being cool as the highway through Leonard's life and works, Rzepka finds plenty of byways to explore along the way.Rzepka delineates the stages and patterns that characterize Leonard’s creative evolution. Like jazz greats, he forged an individual writing style immediately recognizable for its voice and rhythm, including his characters' rat-a-tat recitations, curt backhands, and ragged trains of thought. Rzepka draws on more than twelve hours of personal interviews with Leonard and applies what he learned to his close analysis of the writer’s long life and prodigious output: 45 published novels, 39 published and unpublished short stories, and numerous essays written over the course of six decades.
