The Widow
by Georges Simenon John Petrie Paul TherouxThe Widow is the story of two outcasts and their fatal encounter. One is the widow herself, Tati. Still young, she's never had an easy time of it, but she's not the kind to complain. Tati lives with her father-in-law on the family farm, putting up with his sexual attentions, working her fingers to the bone, improving the property and knowing all the time that her late husband's sister is scheming to kick her out and take the house back. The other is a killer. Just out of prison and in search of a new life, Jean meets up with Tati, who hires him as a handyman and then takes him to bed. Things are looking up, at least until Jean falls hard for the girl next door. The Widow was published in the same year as Camus' The Stranger, and André Gide judged it the superior book. It is Georges Simenon's most powerful and disturbing exploration of the bond between death and desire.

The Widow Lerouge

The local police force is stumped. Enter Monsieur Tabaret--a former clerk who is also a remarkably astute amateur detective. It is up to Tabaret and the clever Monsieur Lecoq to unravel the mystery and apprehend the killer. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.
The Widow Lerouge (Monsieur Lecoq #1)
by Emile GaboriauEmile Gaboriau (1833-1873) is an important figure in the history of detective fiction. A French journalist and novelist, he created the "roman policier" with a series of books involving private detective Monsieur Lecoq, who works logically. Lecoq was based on a real-life thief turned policeman named Francois Vidocq (1775-1857), whose memoirs mixed fiction and fact. Gaboriau's huge following was eclipsed by Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. Interestingly, Holmes may have been at least partly based on another of Gaboriau's characters, consulting detective Father Tabaret, whose methods Monsieur Lecoq adopts in the first Lecoq book.
