Anatomy: A Complete Guide for Artists (Dover Anatomy for Artists)

by Joseph Sheppard

In this superb guidebook, a skilled practitioner of figure drawing demonstrates how to achieve mastery of anatomy through careful, knowledgeable articulation of the muscles and bones lying beneath the skin. Joseph Sheppard's concise instructions have been carefully integrated with over 250 halftone illustrations and over 180 line drawings to lead artists one step at a time through the techniques required in rendering human anatomy convincingly. The opening chapter of the book presents the special techniques involved in mastering human proportion. The chapters that follow each deal with a separate part of the body: the arm, hand, leg, foot, torso, head, and neck (with special coverage of facial features and expressions) and the complete figure. Each of these chapters follows a basic format that combines drawings of the featured body portion from many different angles, coverage of the specific bones and muscles involved, a table of muscle origins and insertions, and coverage of surface anatomy and depictions of the body part in a variety of positions. Joseph Sheppard taught drawing, anatomy, and painting for many years at the Maryland Institute of Art. He is the author of several books of art instruction, and the recipient of a number of distinguished prizes and awards for his sculptures and other works of art, many of which are in the collections of art museums across America.

Anatomy 360

by Lorna Stevenson Dr Jamie Roebuck

Our bodies are a mystery to us. We may see our arms and legs move, but we have no idea how the muscles beneath look as they contract. We know that our stomachs digest food and our hearts pump blood throughout our bodies, but the images we have in our heads of these organs are often inaccurate or incomplete. Even seeing pictures of our internal systems and organs can be misleading if these pictures don't offer a full, 360-degree view.Anatomy 360 shows the human body in its entirety-from the skin to the muscles to the organs to the bones. This stunning book provides a unique perspective on our most crucial parts, showing how the structures of our bodies influence their functions. You'll learn about the vagus nerve, which allows us to swallow, speak and cough, and the frontalis muscle, which raises our eyebrows when we're surprised. You'll also learn why our noses run when we cry and why our brains are so important even though they weigh just one kilogram each. With Anatomy 360, you'll finally get a complete look at the human body-even the parts you thought you'd never see!

Anatomy and Anatomists in Early Modern Spain (The History of Medicine in Context)

by Bjørn Skaarup

Taking the Vesalian anatomical revolution as its point of departure, this volume charts the apparent rise and fall of anatomy studies within universities in sixteenth-century Spain, focussing particularly on primary sources from 1550 to 1600. In doing so, it both clarifies the Spanish contribution to the field of anatomy and disentangles the distorted political and historiographical viewpoints emerging from previous research. Studies of early modern Iberian science have only been carried out coherently and collaboratively in the last few decades, even though fierce debates on the subject have dominated Spanish historiography for more than two centuries. In the field of anatomy studies, many uninformed and biased readings of archival sources have resulted in a very confused picture of the practice of dissection and the teaching of anatomy in the Iberian Peninsula, in which the highly complex conditions of anatomical research within Spain’s national context are often oversimplified. The new empirical evidence that this book brings to light suggests a far more multifaceted narrative of Iberian Renaissance anatomy than has been presented to date.

Anatomy and Construction of the Human Figure

by Charles Earl Bradbury

To draw or paint human figures truly, an artist must have as much understanding of bones and muscles as of form. This beautiful guide by a respected artist and teacher provides that knowledge. Realistic plates of bones and muscles show form and function, while full-color images make graphic distinctions between bone, muscle, and tendon. Drawings throughout the book emphasize fundamentals of anatomy and show simple methods of building the forms.Author Charles Earl Bradbury (1888-1967) takes a two-part approach in this book. The first part features a self-contained treatment of the bones of the skeleton and how they relate to the body's outline and muscle masses. The second focuses on muscles and their actions, showing how they are constructed and how they look in the human form. Male and female structures are compared and contrasted throughout the text. Designed specifically for classroom use, this volume is also a priceless reference.

Anatomy and Drawing

by Victor Perard

This instructive book presents excellent annotated line drawings of anatomical structure for the beginning artist. Explaining the subject in simple terms and with an extensive series of dynamic illustrations, the author identifies parts of the body and demonstrates a wide array of physical activities through his sketches. Following notes on proportion and drawing, chapters cover the human skeleton, head and neck, torso, arm, hand, leg, foot, and musculature. Numerous illustrations depict various views of these structures, movements of the human figure, as well as changes in the relative proportions of features at different ages. One of the best books in its field, Anatomy and Drawing helps demystify a complex subject by enabling students to visualize the muscles and bones under the skin, and covers just about everything a beginner needs to know about drawing the human anatomy.

Anatomy and Examination in Ocular Trauma (Ocular Trauma)

by Hua Yan

This book aimed to provide the most thorough knowledge of ocular anatomy related to trauma and standard ocular examinations to clinical practitioners, such as the nurses, medical students, residents, fellows and even ophthalmologists, to help them making the most appropriate decision on the management of patients who have suffered from such ocular conditions. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the eyeball and the traumatic characteristics of each structure of the eyeball are a prerequisite for proper interpretation of long-term outcomes of mechanical eye injuries. The first part provides the audiences general information of ocular anatomy, which will help them understand the basic anatomic knowledge and generate a clinical thinking. The following part provides the detailed examinations. They will help readers to make the right diagnose and offer the best advice or treatment to the patients. For each chapter, detailed clinical workup, clinical presentations and signs, and pictures or illustrative figures will be provided. Part 3 will benefit more medical coworkers to be familiar with the registration system of ocular trauma and its social and medical meaning. This will also help the advances of epidemiology and proper treatment approaches for ocular trauma. Hopefully this book may help the clinical practitioners to be fully prepared for any challenge of ocular traumatic cases.

Anatomy and Exposures of Spinal Nerves

by Amgad S. Hanna

This book is a comprehensive illustrated surgical guide to operative exposures of the spinal nerves, also known as peripheral nerves. Each chapter is devoted to a particular nerve and describes the origin, anatomic relations, branches, surgical approaches, and clinical significance. The text is concise and easy to read and is complemented by informative color photos from cadaveric dissections and surgical procedures. A separate chapter on technical notes identifies surgical pearls relating to techniques such as nerve suturing and nerve transfers. Importantly, unlike other peripheral nerve atlases, this book is accompanied by videos of different approaches. The book will be especially valuable for residents and fellows in training and candidates for oral board and MOC examinations. It is also designed to provide a quick illustrated review for surgeons unfamiliar with a procedure. Most videos are less than 5 minutes long, and it should take less than 10 minutes to review each approach, including watching the video. Anatomy and Exposures of Spinal Nerves will effectively fill a gap caused by the absence of a peripheral nerve surgeon from many neurosurgery training programs.

Anatomy and Perspective: The Fundamentals of Figure Drawing (Dover Art Instruction)

by Charles Oliver

Artists of classical Greece and the Renaissance were highly aware of the complexity and great beauty of the human figure, and strove in their artwork to depict the ideal form. This book by an experienced twentieth-century art teacher covers two fundamentals of figure drawing that were equally important to masters of earlier eras -- anatomy and perspective, subjects that seldom receive a thorough treatment within the same book. Carefully addressing both topics, the text suggests ways to convey the structure and functions of the human figure, covers elementary principles of drawing, and considers the use of light and shadow. Also discussed are aspects of measurement and the application of such simple forms as the cube, cylinder, and sphere in representing parts of the human body.In describing the relationship between anatomical features and surface form, the chapters on anatomy include drawings of the bones and muscles of the trunk, upper and lower limbs, and the head and its prominent aspects. A final section focuses on accessories, such as eyeglasses and clothing -- items which, when worn, virtually become part of the figure's anatomy.Clearly and concisely written, Anatomy and Perspective will be an important addition to the personal library of anyone interested in drawing the human figure.
