Cultivating Mindfulness to Raise Children Who Thrive: Why Human Connection from Before Birth Matters

by Antonella Sansone

Cultivating Mindfulness to Raise Children Who Thrive introduces an expanded view of human development and health, which begins before conception and moves through pregnancy, early childhood and adulthood. This book is a call for all prenatal and perinatal professionals and policy makers to appreciate indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing and integrate them with scientific evidence in the care of expectant parents and their babies. It explains how this could also tackle pressing social issues facing the modern world and favour social innovations through a revaluation of preconception, pregnancy, birth and childcare practices. Sansone presents the reader with scientific discoveries of epigenetics, interpersonal neuroscience, quantum physics, attachment, anthropology, prenatal and perinatal psychology and mindfulness, which interestingly resonate with the intuitions of primal wisdom. The book will be of interest to clinicians, policy makers, researchers, parents, and those interested in the prenatal and perinatal roots of human development and well-being.

The Cultural Context of Sexual Pleasure and Problems: Psychotherapy with Diverse Clients

by Kathryn S. K. Hall Cynthia A. Graham

Using rich case material and research presented by distinguished authorities in the fields of sex, couple, family, and psychotherapy, this edited book contributes to our efforts to help individuals and couples increase their sexual satisfaction. The authors explore social and cultural backgrounds, the meaning of sexual problems in specific cultural contexts, and the way in which culture presents challenges to traditional psychotherapy. More importantly, they answer the question: should therapists accept any and all behaviors, values, and attitudes that are considered normal, even if they violate the therapist’s own cultural standards? The case studies identify challenging cultural issues and provide clinicians with culturally sensitive treatment options. The book’s sections also separate chapters based on the degree to which psychological treatments are recognized and utilized for dealing with sexual problems in different countries, making it an ideal reference for professionals and students. The concluding chapter looks at culture through the lens of the provider, rather than the patient, and ties together the major themes and questions posed.

Cultural Perspectives on Youth Justice: Connecting Theory, Policy and International Practice

by Elaine Arnull Darrell Fox

Young people, crime and delinquency are words that are commonly linked in public perception and young people are often blamed for social ills. Their deviancy and threat to social control has been held to be a social fact from Plato to today. This book subjects that 'fact' to critical examination through consideration of youth justice systems in six different countries, drawing on sociological and criminological analysis as well as expert practitioner opinion. This book's comparative, cultural approach allows for consideration of the impact of new and emergent systems of communication and discourse and considers how these may impact future constructions of delinquency at a local and global level. Understanding changing constructions of delinquency, the systems and responses we already have and their strengths and weaknesses enables critique about what we do and what we know, and allows us to imagine how it might be otherwise.

Cultural Resistance: Challenging Beliefs About Men, Women, and Therapy

by Kaethe Weingarten

In everyday life--in relationships, in various institutions, in texts--cultural premises influence and sometimes limit individuals’thoughts, actions, and ideas. Cultural Resistance: Challenging Beliefs About Men, Women, and Therapy analyzes cultural constraints and encourages therapists, individuals, and communities to practice cultural resistance on a daily basis, allowing for the realization of diverse and suppressed knowledges. Cultural Resistance shows general patterns by which some ideas in a culture become accepted and others are marginalized. It proposes ways individuals and communities can resist the hold of limiting ideas on their lives. In the postmodern tradition, Editor Kathy Weingarten brings together authors who ask and offer answers to the question, “What is not present in our thinking?” Each chapter invites therapists to extend their thinking about the scope of their work. Topics covered include: challenging cultural beliefs about mothers transforming masculine identities lesbian and gay parents a narrative approach to anorexia/bulimia perspectives on the Black woman and sexual trauma, focusing on Thomas v. Hill opening therapy to conversations with a personal god new conversations on controversial issuesThe chapters in Cultural Resistance first describe cultural premises that constrain the lives of women, men, and/or therapists and then develop an approach to resisting these constraints. A response follows each chapter in an effort to promote discourse, extend meanings, and encourage learning between professionals.Cultural Resistance yields new perspectives on the nature of social change and the relationships between individuals and culture. It offers valuable insights to family therapists, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers who want to broaden their thinking and approach. It gives therapists a fresh, new way of thinking about themselves, others, and their conversations through applications which may be professional, personal, or both.

Culture and Family: Problems and Therapy (Psychology Revivals)

by Wen-Shing Tseng Jing Hsu

Originally published in 1991, this landmark guide gave brilliant insights on dealing with the cultural aspects of family mental health. It systematically reviews various dimensions of the family from a cross-cultural perspective, including system, development, behaviour, and functioning. It then thoroughly examines the problems and dysfunctions that can occur in families of different cultural backgrounds, and finally proposes culturally appropriate assessments and treatments for resolving these family problems.Family counsellors, therapists, and researchers who study the family will find practical suggestions on how to assess and evaluate the family with cultural considerations; clinical suggestions on providing culturally relevant, effective care of the family; and theoretical elaboration on the cultural implications of family therapy. Instead of focusing on families of a particular ethnic or cultural background, the book gives comprehensive coverage to subjects that related to cultural aspects of the family function, problems, and therapy. The authors’ unique backgrounds, which include analysis of the cross-cultural aspects of human behaviour, knowledge in family research, and clinical experience in family therapy, add immeasurably to this book's important contribution.

Cultures of Infancy (Psychology Press & Routledge Classic Editions)

by Heidi Keller

The Classic Edition of Heidi Keller’s Cultures of Infancy, first published in 2007, includes a new introduction by the author, which describes for readers the original context of her work, how she has further developed her research and thinking, and the ongoing relevance of this volume in the context of future challenges for the field. In its original volume, Cultures of Infancy presented the first systematic analysis of culturally informed developmental pathways, synthesizing evolutionary and cultural psychological perspectives for a broader understanding of human development. In this compelling book, Heidi Keller utilizes ethnographic reports, as well as quantitative and qualitative analyses, to illustrate how humans resolve universal developmental tasks in particular sociodemographic contexts. These contexts are represented in cultural models, with three distinct models addressed throughout the text: the model of independence with autonomy as developmental organizer; the model of interdependence with relatedness as the developmental organizer; and the model of autonomous relatedness representing particular mixtures of autonomy and relatedness. The book offers an empirical examination of the first integrative developmental task during the early months of life—relationship formation. Keller shows that early parenting experiences shape the basic foundation of the self within particular models of parenting that are influenced by culturally informed socialization goals. With distinct patterns of results that the studies have revealed, Cultures of Infancy helps redefine developmental psychology as part of a culturally informed science based on evolutionary groundwork. Scholars interested in a broad perspective on human development and culture will benefit from this pioneering volume.

Cultures of Transnational Adoption

by Toby Alice Volkman

During the 1990s, the number of children adopted from poorer countries to the more affluent West grew exponentially. Close to 140,000 transnational adoptions occurred in the United States alone. While in an earlier era, adoption across borders was assumed to be straightforward--a child traveled to a new country and stayed there--by the late twentieth century, adoptees were expected to acquaint themselves with the countries of their birth and explore their multiple identities. Listservs, Web sites, and organizations creating international communities of adoptive parents and adoptees proliferated. With contributors including several adoptive parents, this unique collection looks at how transnational adoption creates and transforms cultures. The cultural experiences considered in this volume raise important questions about race and nation; about kinship, biology, and belonging; and about the politics of the sending and receiving nations. Several essayists explore the images and narratives related to transnational adoption. Others examine the recent preoccupation with "roots" and "birth cultures. " They describe a trip during which a group of Chilean adoptees and their Swedish parents traveled "home" to Chile, the "culture camps" attended by thousands of young-adult Korean adoptees whom South Korea is now eager to reclaim as "overseas Koreans," and adopted children from China and their North American parents grappling with the question of what "Chinese" or "Chinese American" identity might mean. Essays on Korean birth mothers, Chinese parents who adopt children within China, and the circulation of children in Brazilian families reveal the complexities surrounding adoption within the so-called sending countries. Together, the contributors trace the new geographies of kinship and belonging created by transnational adoption. Contributors.
