The Research Funding Toolkit: How to Plan and Write Successful Grant Applications

by Jacqueline Aldridge Andrew M. Derrington

Writing high quality grant applications is easier when you know how research funding agencies work and how your proposal is treated in the decision-making process. The Research Funding Toolkit provides this knowledge and teaches you the necessary skills to write high quality grant applications. A complex set of factors determine whether research projects win grants. This handbook helps you understand these factors and then face and overcome your personal barriers to research grant success. The guidance also extends to real-world challenges of grant-writing, such as obtaining the right feedback, dealing effectively with your employer and partner institutions, and making multiple applications efficiently. There are many sources that will tell you what a fundable research grant application looks like. Very few help you learn the skills you need to write one. The Toolkit fills this gap with detailed advice on creating and testing applications that are readable, understandable and convincing.

The Research Journey: Introduction to Inquiry

by Sharon Rallis Gretchen Rossman Thomas Schwandt

Designed to foster "inquiry-mindedness," this book prepares graduate students to develop a conceptual framework and conduct inquiry projects that are linked to ongoing conversations in a field. The authors examine different ways of knowing and show how to identify a research question; build arguments and support them with evidence; make informed design decisions; engage in reflective, ethical practices; and produce a written proposal or report. Each chapter opens with a set of critical questions, followed by a dialogue among five fictional graduate students exploring questions and concerns about their own inquiry projects; these issues are revisited throughout the chapter. Other useful features include end-of-chapter learning activities for individual or group use. Useful pedagogical features include: *Framing questions for exploration and reflection. *Chapter-opening dialogues that bring in perspectives from multiple disciplines. *Example boxes with detailed cases and questions for the reader. *End-of-chapter activities and experiential exercises that guide readers to develop their own inquiry projects. *Suggestions for further reading.

The Resilience of The Indian Economy and The Great Reset

by Jebamalai Vinanchiarachi

A sharp fall in the growth of Indian economy during the first quarter of the fiscal year 2020-2021, plunging to minus 23.4 per cent in the wake of COVID - 19 induced ramifications, and the second wave of COVID - 19 created the biggest challenge to foster the envisaged double - digit growth. Amidst the biggest crisis in recent memory, signals about the resilience of the economy of India remain in tact. Many believe that the recovery of and growth prospects for the economy are completely doomed and that it will be impossible to make optimistic claims about V - shaped or U - shaped recovery in the near future. As an economist, I wanted to revisit my doctoral thesis, which contained authentic empirical evidence to bear testimony to the fact that India's huge domestic demand potential would alone serve as the key factor strengthening the resilience of the economy despite formidable challenges. Hence, this book.

The Resources of the Past in Early Medieval Europe

by Rosamond Mckitterick Clemens Gantner Rosamond McKitterick Sven Meeder Clemens Gantner

This volume analyses the importance of history, the textual resources of the past and the integration of Christian and imperial Rome into the cultural memory of early medieval Europe within the wider question of identity formation. The case studies in this book shed new light on the process of codification and modification of cultural heritage in the light of the transmission of texts and the extant manuscript evidence from the early middle ages. The authors demonstrate how particular texts and their early medieval manuscript representatives in Italy, Francia, Saxony and Bavaria not only reflect ethnic, social and cultural identities but themselves contributed to the creation of identities, gave meaning to social practice, and were often intended to inspire, guide, change, or prevent action, directly or indirectly. These texts are shown to be part of a cultural effort to shape the present by restructuring the past.

The Revolution in Anthropology Ils 69 (International Library of Sociology)

by I.C. Jarvie

Professor Jarvie examines the nature of the revolution in social anthropology in order to investigate its results. Working within Karl Popper's radical view of the nature of science, he argues that the subject is one of the oldest and most fundamental of all studies and suggests it can easily be traced back to Plato and Aristotle, not merely as a matter of historical curiosity, but as having fruitful results for the understanding of Malinowski and the revolution.

The Rhetoric of Fiction

by Wayne C. Booth

The first edition of The Rhetoric of Fiction transformed the criticism of fiction and soon became a classic in the field. One of the most widely used texts in fiction courses, it is a standard reference point in advanced discussions of how fictional form works, how authors make novels accessible, and how readers recreate texts, and its concepts and terms—such as "the implied author," "the postulated reader," and "the unreliable narrator"—have become part of the standard critical lexicon. For this new edition, Wayne C. Booth has written an extensive Afterword in which he clarifies misunderstandings, corrects what he now views as errors, and sets forth his own recent thinking about the rhetoric of fiction. The other new feature is a Supplementary Bibliography, prepared by James Phelan in consultation with the author, which lists the important critical works of the past twenty years—two decades that Booth describes as "the richest in the history of the subject."

The Rhetoric of Plato's Republic: Democracy and the Philosophical Problem of Persuasion

by James L. Kastely

Plato isn’t exactly thought of as a champion of democracy, and perhaps even less as an important rhetorical theorist. In this book, James L. Kastely recasts Plato in just these lights, offering a vivid new reading of one of Plato’s most important works: the Republic. At heart, Kastely demonstrates, the Republic is a democratic epic poem and pioneering work in rhetorical theory. Examining issues of justice, communication, persuasion, and audience, he uncovers a seedbed of theoretical ideas that resonate all the way up to our contemporary democratic practices. As Kastely shows, the Republic begins with two interrelated crises: one rhetorical, one philosophical. In the first, democracy is defended by a discourse of justice, but no one can take this discourse seriously because no one can see—in a world where the powerful dominate the weak—how justice is a value in itself. That value must be found philosophically, but philosophy, as Plato and Socrates understand it, can reach only the very few. In order to reach its larger political audience, it must become rhetoric; it must become a persuasive part of the larger culture—which, at that time, meant epic poetry. Tracing how Plato and Socrates formulate this transformation in the Republic, Kastely isolates a crucial theory of persuasion that is central to how we talk together about justice and organize ourselves according to democratic principles.

The Rhetoric of the Gospel

by C. Clifton Black

Rhetorical approaches that examine how the biblical text expresses itself in ways that are beautiful and persuasive have become increasingly popular for the serious study of the Bible. This book introduces students of the New Testament to classical rhetorical analysis by exploring the gospels and the book of Acts and the development of early Christian preaching.

The Right not to Be Subjected to Enforced Disappearance: Concept, Content and Scope

by Ioanna Pervou

This book offers a distinctive approach to the right not to be subjected to enforced disappearance. Over the last decade, the entry into force of the UN Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance has brought to the forefront of legal discussion the need to effectively address the practice of disappearance. Yet, there are still obstacles to combatting it, which are in part due to a limited understanding of the right’s underlying concept, content and scope. This book examines the phenomenon and definition of enforced disappearance and sheds new light on the right against disappearance. Presenting a doctrinal appraisal of the norm’s legal value, it suggests that the right against enforced disappearance holds a customary value, while also arguing that it has since attained a jus cogens status. Lastly, it examines in detail the rights to truth and reparation and how regional and national courts have interpreted these norms. It assesses the UN Convention’s dynamics and considers whether the lack of a right against disappearance embedded in regional human rights systems affects individuals’ protection. The book provides an overview of key jurisprudence on disappearances, making it of benefit to both practitioners and theorists of international law.
