Keep Your Greek: Strategies for Busy People

by Constantine R. Campbell

Seminarians spend countless hours mastering biblical languages and learning how the knowledge of them illuminates the reading, understanding, and application of Scripture. But while excellent language acquisition resources abound, few really teach students how to maintain their use of Greek for the long term. Consequently, pastors and other former Greek students find that under the pressures of work, ministry, preaching, and life, their hard-earned Greek skills begins to disappear. Con Campbell has been counseling one-time Greek students for years, teaching them how to keep their language facility for the benefit of those to whom they minister and teach. He shows how following the right principles makes it possible for many to retain—and in some cases regain—their Greek language skills. Pastors will find Keep Your Greek an encouraging and practical guide to strengthening their Greek abilities so that they can make linguistic insights a regular part of their study and teaching. Current students will learn how to build skills that will serve them well once they complete their formal language instruction.

Keepers of the American Dream: A Study of Staff Development and Multicultural Education (Routledge Library Editions: Education)

by Christine E. Sleeter

This book reports an ethnographic study of thirty teachers from eighteen schools who participated in a staff development programme in multicultural education. The study examines how multicultural education was actually presented to teachers, and areas in which their classroom teaching and perception of students changed over the two-year period. Although most of the teachers reported learning a good deal, changes in their teaching and their discussions of teaching were fairly limited. After reporting the data, the book examines why changes were limited, analyzing three areas: the nature of staff development and how multicultural education was packaged; the structure of schools as institutions; and the identities and life experiences of teachers as White women, often from working class backgrounds.

Keeping Women in Science

by Kate White

Keeping Women in Science examines the careers of women and men at a large Australian research institute and the challenges that women with or without children experience, often resulting from direct and indirect discrimination and being positioned as outsiders. The research found a huge generational change between the Baby Boomers—the current science leaders—and Gen X and Gen Ys. Younger women and men reject the traditional model of a successful scientist—a single male for whom science is like a religious vocation. Instead, they seek new models for doing science that support dual careers, work flexibility and work-life balance.

Keeping Your Child Healthy in a Germ-Filled World: A Guide for Parents (A Johns Hopkins Press Health Book)

by Athena P. Kourtis

A &“well written and easily comprehended&” guide to the microbes in our midst—and how to protect kids from infections (Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal). We&’re all too aware that the world is full of germs—viruses old and new, parasites, fungi, bacteria that sometimes evolve into antibiotic-resistant superbugs. But the truth is that while infections are harmful, not all germs are bad. In fact, some of them we can&’t live without. In this book a pediatrician who specializes in infectious diseases gives parents the clear information they need to keep their families healthy—without panicking or going overboard. Dr. Athena P. Kourtis sorts through topics including antibiotics, vaccines, hygiene, health foods, and home remedies, and identifies which rules to follow—and which ones to ignore. She says: • No to overprotecting your children from germs • No to antimicrobial soaps and cleaning products at home • No to over-prescribed antibiotics • Yes to strategic hand washing • Yes to being conscious of germs and the pathways they use • Yes to vaccines She offers tips for protecting children at home, in school, at meals, on the playground, on trips, while playing sports—and answers questions that commonly worry parents. How many times should you wash prewashed spinach? (At least twice.) Does getting enough sleep help fight infection? (Yes.) Are pre-sliced foods more likely to spread infection? (They are.) This comprehensive guide is the first step in helping you and your child stay afloat in the microbial sea.

Kentucky Wildlife Encyclopedia: An Illustrated Guide to Birds, Fish, Mammals, Reptiles, and Amphibians

by Scott Shupe

From the earliest European exploration and settlement of Kentucky, the state’s wildlife has played an important role. Men like the legendary Daniel Boone were in part lured to Kentucky by the opportunity to hunt Whitetail Deer, Bison, and Elk; and the Native Americans living in the region sustained themselves largely by harvesting mammals, birds, and fish. While the state’s wildlife is still an important resource for trappers, hunters, and fishermen, wildlife is also increasingly important for its intrinsic, aesthetic value. In Kentucky Wildlife Encyclopedia, nationally known naturalist Scott Shupe has collected information on all the wildlife that reside in the Bluegrass State. The first in a series of state wildlife encyclopedias, this book will be a handy, usable, layman’s guide to Kentucky’s wildlife. Included are over 800 color photographs, depicting the different species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and fish, while also offering over 600 range maps to show their territory. Along with basic information for the biology of each animal, Shupe includes the size, habitat, and abundance of each species located in the state. Whether you’re a lover of the outdoors, photography, or are looking to learn more about your state, this comprehensive guide will teach you about the wonderful wildlife that covers the water, earth, and skies of Kentucky.
