Christmas Stories and Legends

by Phebe A. Curtiss

Christmas Stories and Legends is a collection of tales to restore "the real spirit of Christmas" to the jaded world of . . . 1913. Even then, editor Phebe A. Curtiss worried children, especially, might get lost in the day's creeping commercialism. She aimed the book at schools and Sunday schools, and assembled twenty bits of Christmas lore to teach a proper observance. She includes, of course, the Nativity story, but other parts of yesterday's Christmas will be much less familiar to modern readers. The song, "White Christmas," hadn't been written yet, and the expression meant something more than snow. People gave white gifts to symbolize purity. Children might have had visions of sugarplums, but the book includes the unsweetened versions of two weepers from Hans Christian Anderson: "The Little Match Girl" and "The Fir Tree." (The tree learns too late to appreciate Christmas -- on the bonfire afterward.) And little Tom has to learn he is lucky to receive new skates for Christmas, even if they're the wrong brand. The book brings back great-grandfather's Christmas as a gift for today's worriers. Christmas always came with problems. But it always came, anyway.

Christmas Stories: Heartwarming Classics of Angels, a Manger, and the Birth of Hope

by Max Lucado

A Heartwarming Collection of Christmas Stories and Reflections from Max LucadoThese stories--like your favorite Christmas ornaments--come in all shapes and sizes. They unfold in a variety of settings, from ancient Bethlehem to rural England. From a small Texas town to the heavenly realms. Some are short. Others many chapters long. Some offer reflections. Others imagine Christmas through the eyes of a burnt-out candle maker, a lonely business man, or heavenly angels.Yet all are vintage Lucado, and all resonate with the wonder of the season."In the mystery of Christmas," Max writes, "we find its majesty. The mystery of how God became flesh, why he chose to come, and how much he must love his people. Such mysteries can never be solved, just as love can never be diagrammed. Christmas is best pondered, not with logic, but imagination."That's what each of these unique Christmas stories help us do. In the midst of the bustle and hurry that often distracts us this time of year, these stories free us to explore the ways in which Christ's coming has forever changed history--and us.

Jane reads from the Bible, just like their father always did, and remembers when she took part in a Living Nativity. Cast as an angel, she decided to make her part more exciting, resulting in a dangerous fall from a hayloft. She should have been injured, but insists a strong pair of arms protected her as she fell -- a Christmas miracle that changed the course of her life. Louise studies the badly-constructed stocking she made for her newborn daughter Cynthia and remembers her first Christmas as a mom. And Alice examines the special Christmas ornament she received the year she organized a program to give all the animals from a nearby shelter a home for Christmas.
