Countering Violent Extremism by Winning Hearts and Minds (Advanced Sciences and Technologies for Security Applications)

by Adib Farhadi

Since 9/11, the United States and its allies have been waging an endless War on Terror to counter violent extremism by “winning hearts and minds,” particularly in Afghanistan. However, violent extremism remains on the rise worldwide. The effort and sacrifice of the War on Terror have been continually undermined by actions, narratives, and policies that many of the 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide perceive as Islamophobic. Incidents of Islamophobia on the part of Western governments, media, and civilians, whether intentional or unintentional, alienate the majority of Muslims who are law-abiding and would be key allies in the fight against violent extremism. In Afghanistan, for example, violent extremist groups portray U.S. and NATO forces as blasphemous, anti-Muslim invaders to frighten Afghan villagers into compliance. A similar perception weakens domestic countering violent extremism programs in the West that rely on cooperation with Muslim communities. As the Great Powers Competition emerges among the U.S., Russia, and China, America and the West can ill afford any further impairment in their counterterrorism strategy. The dangers of Islamophobia must be recognized and eradicated immediately. In Countering Violent Extremism by Winning Hearts and Minds, Adib Farhadi demonstrates how Islamophobia poses a threat to U.S. national security by utilizing historical context, statistical analysis, and in-depth case studies. Farhadi, who headed Afghanistan’s National Development Strategy, describes how Koran burnings, anti-Islamic rhetoric, and racial profiling harm relationships with the majority of Muslims who are not involved in violent extremism and thus perpetuate the War on Terror. America has sacrificed thousands of lives and has spent more than $6 trillion on the War on Terror. It can ill afford to squander more valuable resources in a strategy undermined by Islamophobia or perception of Islamophobia. As Farhadi explains, only through a reconciliatory narrative, can we work toward a shared future where violent extremism is eradicated. This book is essential reading for scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and executives who are invested in maintaining and rebuilding American credibility essential to global security and peace.

Countering Violent and Hateful Extremism in Indonesia: Islam, Gender and Civil Society (New Security Challenges)

by Matteo Vergani Greg Barton Yenny Wahid

This book provides an overview of preventing and countering violent extremism (P/CVE) to assist readers in developing a more complete understanding of P/CVE and the issues of radicalisation, disengagement and rehabilitation. It shines a light on some key P/CVE programmes and initiatives in Indonesia and is written to facilitate understanding preventing and countering violent extremism in a larger frame. It is intended to be of interest to civil society activists, security practitioners, communities, policy makers and researchers alike. It represents a collaboration, born out of partnership in the field, that brings together academic researchers and civil society activists from Indonesia and Australia. Around the world, far too little is known about Indonesian society in general and Indonesian Islam and civil society in particular. This is, in large measure, because of the barrier of language. This book represents a small, but hopefully significant, contribution to opening a window to Indonesia. The focus of this book is on the challenging issues entailed with violent and hateful extremism. The initiatives it portrays and the people it describes, and whose voices it channels, are filled with the hope of transforming the world to make it better.

Countering the Claims of Evangelical Feminism: Biblical Responses to the Key Questions

by Wayne Grudem

Can She Do What He Can Do? Everyday people are considering the roles of men and women in the home and church. Evangelical feminists consider these roles interchangeable. In this helpful book, Wayne Grudem offers fifty biblical responses to feminists' arguments. While the Bible teaches that God values men and women equally, their roles in home and church are complementary to each other, not interchangeable. Arguing against both feminism on the left and male chauvinism on the right, this to-the-point handbook is a valuable resource. Men and Women. Church and Home. What are their roles in each? Can the lines be crossed? Evangelical feminists boldly assert that male and female roles are interchangeable. Society reflects the argument. But what does the Bible have to say? Wayne Grudem offers more than forty biblical responses to the most crucial questions on this topic, showing God's equal value in men and women and why their roles are complementary, not interchangeable. This to-the-point handbook is a valuable resource enabling every Christian to grasp the issues, including: What the Bible says about the roles of men and women in marriage Women in the church and in church leadership Theology and the concepts of equality, fairness, and justice Claims that a complementarian view is harmful Praise for Evangelical Feminism and Biblical Truth, the exhaustive volume of this work: "No one will be able to deny the cumulative strength of the case this author makes." -- J. I. Packer "This is the most thorough, balanced, and biblically accurate treatment of feminism and the Bible I have seen." -- Stu Weber "After the Bible, I cannot imagine a more useful book for finding reliable help in understanding God's will for manhood and womanhood in the church and the home." -- John Piper Story Behind the Book"I would like to see this book as the 'final answer' to the question of feminism in the church today. There has been a lot of controversy and debate in the church on this subject and I have used the Bible exclusively to answer the question of feminism in the church. This book must not be portrayed as anti-women, or as putting women down in any way. This book will seek throughout to elevate and honor women, to regard them as equal in value to men yet with different God-given roles. This book fairly presents arguments and facts, leading people to conclude for themselves that evangelical feminism is clearly contrary to Scripture." --Wayne GrudemFrom the Trade Paperback edition.

Counterpunch: An Unlikely Alliance of Americans Fighting Back for Faith and Freedom

by Floyd G Brown

Is it possible for renewal to come through peace rather than power? This book will illuminate how we can implement peaceful resistance against the immorality and policies of the Radical Left to bring a renewal of liberty, freedom, and biblically based principles back to America. In his groundbreaking new book, Counterpunch, Floyd G. Brown issues both the battle cry and a strategic action plan for a populist movement in America that goes beyond any president or political party. Issue by issue, the Left chooses new markers in the sand and waits to see who will embrace their agenda. Those who don&’t are canceled and silenced. This leads to alienation and the feeling that violence is the only option left. Brown wants readers to know there is another way, a civil disobedience of the state that allows us to be peaceful—and potentially more successful. Counterpunch explains step-by-step how you can take part in a second American Revolution that will completely reorder the country under new governing principles. Touted as the Christian answer to Saul Alinsky&’s Rules for Radicals, Brown&’s Counterpunch outlines a strategy for mobilizing a peaceful resistance that leads to collective action. Utilizing an evergreen approach that isn&’t focused on specific public policy issues, Floyd delivers a practical, biblically based plan for every American that will lead to the renewal of liberty.

Countertraditions in the Bible: A Feminist Approach

by Ilana Pardes

In this eye-opening book, llana Pardes explores the tense dialogue between dominant patriarchal discourses of the Bible and counter female voices. Pardes studies women’s plots and subplots, dreams and pursuits, uncovering the diverse and at times conflicting figurations of femininity in biblical texts. She also sketches the ways in which antipatriarchal elements intermingle with other repressed elements in the Bible: polytheistic traditions, skeptical voices, and erotic longings.

Counting Islam

by Tarek Masoud

Why does Islam seem to dominate Egyptian politics, especially when the country's endemic poverty and deep economic inequality would seem to render it promising terrain for a politics of radical redistribution rather than one of religious conservativism? This book argues that the answer lies not in the political unsophistication of voters, the subordination of economic interests to spiritual ones, or the ineptitude of secular and leftist politicians, but in organizational and social factors that shape the opportunities of parties in authoritarian and democratizing systems to reach potential voters. Tracing the performance of Islamists and their rivals in Egyptian elections over the course of almost forty years, this book not only explains why Islamists win elections, but illuminates the possibilities for the emergence in Egypt of the kind of political pluralism that is at the heart of what we expect from democracy.

Counting the Days While My Mind Slips Away chronicles his remarkable journey from his early days throwing a football back and forth with his father to speaking about the long-term effects of concussions before Congress, and how his faith keeps him strong and grounded as he looks toward an uncertain future. Ben recounts the experiences that have shaped his life and imparts the lessons he's learned along the way. Emotionally powerful, inspiring, and uplifting, Ben's story will captivate and encourage you to make the most of every day and treasure all of your memories.

Country Church Monuments

by C. B. Newham

A landmark illustrated history of rural church monuments - the forgotten national treasures of England and WalesDeep in the countryside, away from metropolitan abbeys and cathedrals, thousands of funerary monuments are hidden in parish churches. These artworks - medieval brasses and elegant marble effigies, stone tomb chests and grand mausoleums - are of great historical and cultural significance, but have, due to their relative inaccessibility, faded from accounts of our art history.Over twenty-five years, C. B. Newham FSA has visited and photographed more than eight thousand rural churches, cataloguing the monumental sculptures encountered on his quest. In Country Church Monuments, he presents 365 of the very best, each accompanied by detailed photographs, biographies of both the deceased and their sculptors and a wealth of contextual material. Many of these works commemorate famous historical figures, from scheming Tudor courtier Richard Rich to Victorian prime minister William Ewart Gladstone. But more moving are the countless others - minor aristocrats, small-time industrialists, much-loved mothers, fathers and children - who, if not for their memorials, would wholly be lost to time.As Newham blows the dust off these artworks and breathes life into the stories they tell, a new aesthetic history of rural England and Wales emerges. Country Church Monuments is a poignant record of the art we make at the borders of life and death, of our ceaseless human striving for eternity.

Country Music: Selected Early Poems (Wesleyan Poetry Series)

by Charles Wright

A compilation of powerful and moving poems from early in the poet's career. Co-winner of the 1983 National Book Award for Poetry, Country Music is comprised of eighty-eight poems selected from Charles Wright's first four books published between 1970 and 1977. From his first book, The Grave of the Right Hand, to the extraordinary China Trace, this selection of early works represents "Charles Wright's grand passions: his desire to reclaim and redeem a personal past, to make a reckoning with his present, and to conjure the terms by which we might face the future," writes David St. John in the forward. These poems, powerful and moving in their own right, lend richness and insight to Wright's recently collected later works. "In Country Music we see the same explosive imagery, the same dismantled and concentric (or parallel) narratives, the same resolutely spiritual concerns that have become so familiar to us in Wright's more recent poetry," writes St. John.

Courage For The Rest Of US: Going From Ordinary to Extraordinary

by Jim Eschrich

Courage. When that word is uttered, more often than not it’s in connection with heroic deeds involving someone running into a burning building to rescue someone or stepping into the line of fire to protect a buddy. And while such selfless acts certainly reflect great courage, there is another level of courage that lies beneath the surface waiting to emerge. Though not as extreme, it’s a critical element necessary for successful living. In his book Courage for the Rest of Us, author, speaker, entrepreneur, and former member of the U.S. National Bobsled Team, Jim Eschrich explains that ultimate success and deep satisfaction comes only when we are living life authentically and with passion. Doing that takes courage. Circumstances, people, and life in general have ways of keeping us locked into expectations. Whether it’s in our careers, businesses, or personal lives, it takes courage to step out from the norm, and often against the tide, to live the life that we know deep inside that we were meant to live. Through Jim’s first hand, and often outrageous experiences, he demonstrates what it means to reach down and find the courage to counter the expected, release the enthusiasm, and create defining, life-altering, moments. He shows us that ordinary people can live extraordinary lives of passion and fulfillment. In Courage for the Rest of Us you’ll learn what it means to: Be true to yourself, Toss the victim mentality and let your problems push you to greatness, Take appropriate risks, Fail forward, See through your fears to take action, Step out of your comfort zone, Execute your dreams effectively, Create and ride the wave of momentum. Courage for the Rest of Us is all about keeping the adventure alive in you!
