Credo: I Believe

by Caleb Keith Kelsi Klembara

The chapters of this book are concerned with the most basic creed—the Apostles' Creed. Each addresses a particular article within it and what it means to confess it. Far from being pious artifacts, they are gifts to Christians as they seek to always stand firm in the faith and remain united with Christ in his death and resurrection.

Credulity: A Cultural History of US Mesmerism (Class 200: New Studies in Religion)

by Emily Ogden

From the 1830s to the Civil War, Americans could be found putting each other into trances for fun and profit in parlors, on stage, and in medical consulting rooms. They were performing mesmerism. Surprisingly central to literature and culture of the period, mesmerism embraced a variety of phenomena, including mind control, spirit travel, and clairvoyance. Although it had been debunked by Benjamin Franklin in late eighteenth-century France, the practice nonetheless enjoyed a decades-long resurgence in the United States. Emily Ogden here offers the first comprehensive account of those boom years. Credulity tells the fascinating story of mesmerism’s spread from the plantations of the French Antilles to the textile factory cities of 1830s New England. As it proliferated along the Eastern seaboard, this occult movement attracted attention from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s circle and ignited the nineteenth-century equivalent of flame wars in the major newspapers. But mesmerism was not simply the last gasp of magic in modern times. Far from being magicians themselves, mesmerists claimed to provide the first rational means of manipulating the credulous human tendencies that had underwritten past superstitions. Now, rather than propping up the powers of oracles and false gods, these tendencies served modern ends such as labor supervision, education, and mediated communication. Neither an atavistic throwback nor a radical alternative, mesmerism was part and parcel of the modern. Credulity offers us a new way of understanding the place of enchantment in secularizing America.

Cree and Christian: Encounters and Transformations

by Clinton N. Westman

Cree and Christian develops and applies new ethnographic approaches for understanding the reception and indigenization of Christianity, particularly through an examination of Pentecostalism in northern Alberta. Clinton N. Westman draws on historical records and his own long-term ethnographic research in Cree communities to explore questions of historical change, cultural continuity, linguistic practices in ritual, and the degree to which Indigenous identity is implicated by Pentecostal commitments. Such complexity calls for constant negotiation and improvisation, key elements of Pentecostal worship and speech strategies that have been compared to jazz modes. The historical sweep of Cree and Christian considers the dynamics of Pentecostal conversion in relation to the strengths and weaknesses of other denominations and the underlying foundation of Cree cosmological worldviews. Pentecostalism has remained open to recognizing the power of spirits while also benefiting from its own essential flexibility. Pentecostals often seek to gain a degree of temporal and spiritual autonomy and authority that may not have seemed possible under previous Christian practices or Cree traditions.Cree and Christian is the first book to provide a fully historicized account of Indigenous Pentecostalism, connecting contemporary religious practices and pluralism to historical Pentecostal, Evangelical, Catholic, and mainstream Protestant missions since the nineteenth century. By tracing religious practices and discourses since the 1890s, Westman paints a picture of the transformations and encounters from the earliest conversions (and resistance) to today&’s pluralistic, mediatized, and bilingual religious landscape.

Creed & Heresies: Then and Now

by Rose Publishing

This beautiful eBook contains the full text of the Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed, and explains why they are important to learn today. In 14 pages you will take a simple easy-to-understand look back to the historical teachings of the church, and bring them to life for today's believers. During the time of the early church (AD 30-AD 400) some key beliefs were misunderstood by Gnostics and other religious groups. Some people couldn't tell the difference between the teachings of Jesus' apostles and the notions that were common in society. It was important to put together short summaries of the essential doctines of the faith. Many of the phrases were written to address particular false beliefs. The eBook shows that many of the questionable teachings of 2000 years ago are still around. Understanding how the church dealt with these issues in the past helps us to deal with those same issues today. A clear simple explanation of the church's response to ancient heresies, many of which are common in today's cultic groups and other religions.CHART 1Concise easy-to-understand chart with explanations of these groups. They are important to know because so many modern heresies are similar to them. Without a chart such as this, it is difficult to tell the truth from an incorrect belief because groups use the same terms.*Docetism*Ebionitism*Adoptionism*Manicheanism*Marcionism*Modalism*Montanism*Apollinarianism*Arianism*Macedonianism*Pelagianism*NestorianismCHARTS 2, 3 and 4These charts explain each part of the three Creeds line by line and give Bible references for each phrase.*Apostles Creed*Nicene CreedCHART 5Side-by-side comparison of Gnostic and Christian beliefs on:*Jesus, Salvation, Origin of Evil*Cosmonogy (origin of the universe) and Cosmology (the nature, order, and function of the universe)This eBook will make the Creeds come alive. It takes important concepts and makes them clear and understandable for youth, college, and adults.Ideas for using this eBook:*Confirmation and baptism and communion-preparation classes*Parents of confirmation students*Teacher training on the basic beliefs of Christianity*Personal devotional reading*Small group or Bible studyCopy Reader's Note: I loved reading this eBook because it answers the question: "How would I summarize the key teachings of Christianity in one 2-minute explanation?" Have you ever tried it with someone from another country? It's really tough to go through Christian beliefs and word them just right. The Creeds were the ancient version of today's "elevator pitch." It was the two-minute clarification of what Christians believed and what they didn't.

Creer o no creer: Hacia una sociedad laica

by ENR MIRET MAGDALENA
