A Hobbit, a Wardrobe, and a Great War: How J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis Rediscovered Faith, Friendship, and Heroism in the Cataclysm of 1914-18

by Joseph Loconte

The untold story of how the First World War shaped the lives, faith, and writings of J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis The First World War laid waste to a continent and permanently altered the political and religious landscape of the West. For a generation of men and women, it brought the end of innocence--and the end of faith.
Yet for J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, the Great War deepened their spiritual quest. Both men served as soldiers on the Western Front, survived the trenches, and used the experience of that conflict to ignite their Christian imagination. Had there been no Great War, there would have been noHobbit, no Lord of the Rings, no Narnia, and perhaps no conversion to Christianity by C. S. Lewis.
Unlike a generation of young writers who lost faith in the God of the Bible, Tolkien and Lewis produced epic stories infused with the themes of guilt and grace, sorrow and consolation. Giving an unabashedly Christian vision of hope in a world tortured by doubt and disillusionment, the two writers created works that changed the course of literature and shaped the faith of millions. This is the first book to explore their work in light of the spiritual crisis sparked by the conflict.
A New York Times Bestseller

A Hole in the World: Finding Hope in Rituals of Grief and Healing

by Amanda Held Opelt

In a raw and inspiring reflection on grief--selected by Publishers Weekly as one of the best books of the year--a mourning sister processes her personal story of loss by exploring the history of bereavement customs. When Amanda Held Opelt suffered a season of loss—including three miscarriages and the unexpected death of her sister, New York Times bestselling writer Rachel Held Evans—she was confronted with sorrow she didn't know to how face. Opelt struggled to process her grief and accept the reality of the pain in the world. She also wrestled with some unexpectedly difficult questions: What does it mean to truly grieve and to grieve well? Why is it so hard to move on? Why didn&’t my faith prepare me for this kind of pain? And what am I supposed to do now? Her search for answers led her to discover that generations past embraced rituals that served as vessels for pain and aided in the process of grieving and healing. Today, many of these traditions have been lost as religious practice declines, cultures amalgamate, death is sanitized, and pain is averted. In this raw and authentic memoir of bereavement, Opelt explores the history of human grief practices and how previous generations have journeyed through periods of suffering. She explores grief rituals and customs from various cultures, including: the Irish tradition of keening, or wailing in grief, which teaches her that healing can only begin when we dive headfirst into our grief the Victorian tradition of post-mortem photographs and how we struggle to recall a loved one as they were the Jewish tradition of sitting shiva, which reminds her to rest in the strength of her community even when God feels absent the tradition of mourning clothing, which set the bereaved apart in society for a time, allowing them space to honor their grief As Opelt explores each bereavement practice, it gives her a framework for processing her own pain. She shares how, in spite of her doubt and anger, God met her in the midst of sorrow and grieved along with her, and shows that when we carefully and honestly attend to our losses, we are able to expand our capacity for love, faith, and healing.

A Holistic Lemma Science of Mind: The Potential of the Buddhist Flower Garden Sutra

by Shinichi Nakazawa

Nakazawa connects Buddhist philosophy with modern sciences such as psychology, quantum theory, and mathematics, as well as linguistics and the arts to present a perspective on understanding the mind in a world built on interconnection and networks of relations. While Lemma Science is a new and modern study of humans, its provenance is deeply rooted in the Eastern thought tradition. The ancient Greeks identified two modes of human intelligence: the logos and lemma intellects. Etymologically, logos signifies to "arrange and organize what has been gathered in front of one's self." To practice logos-based thinking, one must rely on language. Thus, humans organize and understand the objects in the universe according to linguistic syntax. In contrast, lemma etymologically signifies the intellectual capacity to "grasp the whole at once." Instead of arranging objects along a time axis, as language does, the lemma intellect perceives the world in an intuitive, non-linear and non-causal manner, comprehending the whole in an instant. This book embarks on a venture to establish a new science based upon the lemma intellect. Using non-logos-based materials, rigorously following lemma-based methods, and transgressing the boundaries of academic fields, Nakazawa seeks to construct this new science as a fluid, dynamic entity. This book will be of great interest to researchers across the fields of Japanese studies, Buddhist studies, psychology and linguistics.

A Holy Haunting: Why Faith Isn’t a Leap but a Series of Staggers from One Safe Place to Another

by Sam D. Kim

Winner of the Illumination Book Awards, Bronze Medal for Ministry/Mission '24Winner of the American Book Fest's Legacy Awards, Religion: General '24 Winner of the International Book Awards, Religion: Christianity '23 Winner of the Englewood Readers Best Awards, Honorable Mention '23What if we've been looking at faith all wrong? What if the rise of spiritual consciousness is not a mere byproduct of cultural factors, but an echo resounding from eternity? Atheists like Richard Dawkins often mock prayer, equating it to calling upon a fairy in the sky. This misunderstanding of prayer's purpose pervades western society, criticizing those that practice traditional faith as "old fashioned" or "out of touch." In A Holy Haunting, Dr. Sam D. Kim interacts with this perception of faith and challenges readers to look at faith another way. The rise of modernism was both a blessing and curse for the church; while modernists articulated belief in a succinct and coherent fashion, they reduced the mystery and wonder of faith to nothing more than blind belief. According to Dr. Sam D. Kim, faith is not a set of beliefs, but a central aspect of human existence—defining who they are in the deepest ontological sense. Unlike many who discredit the power of the spiritual or immaterial, Dr. Kim sees human consciousness—the soul—as evidence of humanity being forged in the corridors of eternity, before the primordial universe and the Big Bang. A roadmap of discovery for skeptics and believers alike, A Holy Haunting befriends the doubter, challenges the churchgoer, and gives fresh perspective to the seeker.
