Fire & Flood Study Guide: Digging for Truth in an Age of Deception
by Lynnette FieldTwo young women encounter God in pivotal, historical moments—one in the beginning, at the time of the Great Flood, and another at the end, during the Great Tribulation—and draw closer to Him as they watch prophecy unfold.Fire & Flood by Dawn Morris is a fictional, historical, and futuristic story that challenges readers to discuss and research the many biblical topics it addresses—from interpreting biblical eschatology and prophecy and seeking peace in troubled times to finding salvation from sin and moving beyond the betrayal of false teachers, to investing in community outreach and trusting God’s sovereignty and purpose. Dawn Morris and Lynnette Field compiled Fire & Flood Study Guide: Digging for Truth in an Age of Deception to facilitate discussion within prayer groups and Bible studies for today’s seekers or believers. A perfect companion to Morris’ novel, this guide shows readers how to sort fact from fiction, how to find hope in God’s promises, and how to apply biblical principles to everyday life.
Fire & Flood: A Novel
by Dawn MorrisA gripping dual-story novel chronicling the dramatic journeys of two women who live thousands of years apart, and their experiences of God’s protection and presence in two of Earth’s most dramatic times of turmoil.
Fire & Roses: The Burning of the Charlestown Convent, 1834
by Nancy Lusignan SchultzIn the midst of a deadly heat wave during the summer of 1834, a woman clawed her way over the wall of a Roman Catholic convent near Boston, Massachusetts and escaped to the home of a neighbor, pleading for protection. When the bishop, Benedict Fenwick, persuaded her to return, rumors began swirling through the Yankee community and in the press that she was being held at the convent against her will, and had even been murdered. The imagined fate of the "Mysterious Lady," as she became popularly known, ultimately led to the destruction of the Ursuline convent in Charlestown, Massachusetts on the night of August 11, 1834 by a mob of Protestant men. After battering down the front door, the men destroyed icons, smashed pianos, hurled the bishop's library into a bonfire, ransacked the possessions of both sisters and students, and finally burned the imposing building to the ground. Not satisfied with this orgy of vandalism, they returned the following night and tore the lovely gardens up by the roots. The ruins sat on Mount Benedict, a hill overlooking Boston Harbor, for the next fifty years. The arsonists' ringleader, a brawny bricklayer named John Buzzell, became a folk hero. The nuns scattered, and their proud and feisty mother superior, Mary Anne Moffatt, who battled the working-class rioters and Church authorities, faded mysteriously into history. Nancy Schultz brings alive this forgotten moment in the American story, shedding light on one of the darkest incidents of religious persecution to be recorded in the New World. The result of painstaking archival research, Fire & Roses offers a rare lens on a time when independent, educated women were feared as much as immigrants and Catholics, and anti-Papist diatribes were the stuff of bestsellers and standing-room-only lectures. Schultz examines the imagined secrets that led to the riot and uncovers the real secrets in a cloistered community whose life was completely hidden from the world. She provides a glimpse into nineteenth-century Boston and into an elite boarding school for young women, mostly the daughters of wealthy Protestants, vividly dissecting the period's roiling tensions over class, gender, religion, ethnicity, and education. Although the roots of these conflicts were in the Puritan migration to America, it was ultimately the mob's perverse fantasies about cloistered women -- in an independent community -- that erupted in a combustible night of violence. By unearthing the buried truth and bringing alive these fascinating characters, Nancy Schultz tells a gripping story of prejudice and pride, courage and cowardice in early nineteenth-century America that not only restores a clouded chapter in the country's history but also has a poignant resonance for our own times.

Fire Dreams: Making Black Feminist Liberation in the South
by Laura McTigheFor thirty-five years, the New Orleans-based Black feminist collective Women With A Vision (WWAV) has fought for the liberation of their communities through reproductive justice, harm reduction, abolition feminism, racial justice, and sex workers' rights. In 2012, shortly after one of WWAV's biggest organizing victories, arsonists firebombed and destroyed their headquarters. Fire Dreams is an innovative collaboration between WWAV and Laura McTighe, who work in community to build a social movement ethnography of the organization’s post-arson rebirth. Rooting WWAV in the geography of the South and the living history of generations of Black feminist thinkers, McTighe and WWAV weave together stories from their founders’ pioneering work during the Black HIV/AIDS crisis in the 1980s and their groundbreaking organizing to end criminalization in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina---with other movements for liberation as accomplices. Together, the authors refuse the logics of racial capitalism and share WWAV’s own world-building knowledges, as well as their methods for living these Black feminist futures now. Fire Dreams is a vital toolkit for grassroots organizers, activist-scholars, and all those who dream to make the world otherwise.
Fire From Heaven
by Mark I. Bubeck Craig BubeckThere is a great awakening on the 21st century church's horizon, and it depends on you. All the signs of history and culture point to the certainty of God bringing about revival to his people, one by one--and soon!Satan knows that to resist broad-scope revival, the spiritual battlefront is ironically very personal. You must understand your vital part in the immanent battle and equip yourself enthusiastically to answer the call. The corporate body of Christ's war is very personal battle--it is in a real sense, an "army of one"!
Fire In The Soul: A New Psychology Of Spiritual Optimism
by Joan Borysenko"Gifted healer Joan Borysenko believes that the wounds we suffer - and heal from - can be gateways to a transformation of the spirit, one that not only nourishes our souls but blesses us with the potential to help our world." "In this enlightening book, Dr. Borysenko goes beyond psychology as currently practiced and taps a deeper vein of healing. She reveals to us the power of spiritual optimism, a philosophy that views life crises as opportunities for personal growth and spiritual homecoming." "Drawing on her own experiences with tragedy and illness, as well as on anecdotes from her therapy patients, the author combines scientific knowledge with wisdom and insight to show how the most devastating events can initiate a fruitful search for meaning; how wrestling with the demons of pain, strife, and illness can lead us to discover our wholeness; and how meditation, prayer, and heightened awareness can serve as shining beacons during the proverbial "dark night of the soul."" "These are the times when the soul is on fire, fueled by torment and despair. Yet this same soul burns with an inner flame that can consume old beliefs and negative opinions, allowing a new soul to be born. Thus our darkest moments can lead to spiritual resurrection, bringing us closer to our true hearts...and to the heart of healing." "Getting there, however, is never easy. "Dark nights of the soul" are perilous emotional voyages through stormy seas of suffering. Here the terrain is shadowy and home seems far, far away; here, most of us need a light to navigate by. "Fire in the Soul" is that light, an inspiring and knowing guide to spiritual safe haven in times of loss and pain. Its insight will help you shed self-blame, heal childhood wounds, and gain strength from adversity so that you can find the goodness that is everywhere and feel the love that lights our universe." "This book also features a practical resource section listing books, tapes, and addresses of helpful individuals and organizations. One of its most comforting chapters contains stories, poems, and quotations to help restore and revitalize spiritual optimism. And that is the first step to leading a life filled with faith, love, and courage."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Fire Monks: Zen Mind Meets Wildfire
by Busch Colleen MortonA San Francisco Chronicle Best Book of the Year A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year In June 2008 more than two thousand wildfires, all started by a single lightning storm, blazed across the state of California. Tassajara, the oldest Zen Buddhist monastery in the United States, was at particular risk. Set deep in the Ventana wilderness north of Big Sur, the center is connected to the outside world by a single unpaved road. If fire entered the canyon, there would be no way out. Disaster struck during the summer months, when Tassajara opens its doors to visitors, and the grounds fill with guests expecting a restful respite. Instead, the mountain air filled with smoke, and monks broke from regular meditation to conduct fire drills. All visitors were evacuated, and many Zen students followed. A small crew of residents and firefighters remained, preparing to defend Tassajara. But nothing could have prepared them for what came next. When a treacherous shift in weather conditions brought danger nearer still, firefighters made the flash decision to completely evacuate the monastery. As the firefighters and remaining residents caravanned out the long road to Tassajara, five monks turned back, risking their lives to save the monastery. Fire Monks is their story. A gripping narrative as well as an insider’s portrait of the Zen path, Fire Monks reveals what it means to meet an emergency with presence of mind. In tracking the four men and one woman who returned-all novices in fire but experts in readiness-we witness them take their unique experiences facing the fires in their own lives and apply that wisdom to the crisis at hand. Relying on their Zen training, the monks accomplished the seemingly impossible-greeting the fire not as an enemy to defeat, but as a friend to guide. Fire Monks pivots on the kind of moment some seek and some run from, when life and death hang in simultaneous view. Drawing on the strength of community, the practice of paying attention, and the power of an open, flexible mind, the Tassajara monks were able to remain in the moment and act with startling speed and clarity. In studying an event marked by great danger and uncertainty, Fire Monks reveals the bravery that lives within every heart. .
