Hooked!: Buddhist Writings on Greed, Desire, and the Urge to Consume
by Stephanie KazaAt one time or another, most of us have experienced an all-consuming desire for a material object, a desire so strong that it seems like we couldn't possibly be happy without buying this thing. Yet, when we give in to this impulse, we often find ourselves feeling frustrated and empty. Advertisers, of course, aim to hook us in this way, and, from a global perspective, our tendency to get hooked fuels the rampant over-consumption that is having a devastating impact on the world's stability and on the environment.According to the contributors to this unique anthology, Buddhism can shed valuable light on our compulsions to consume. Craving and attachment--how they arise and how to free ourselves of them--are central themes of Buddhist thought. The writings in this volume, most of which have never been previously published, offer fresh perspectives and much-needed correctives to our society's tendency to believe that having more will make us happier.Hooked! includes a range of writings on how to apply Buddhist thought and ethics to understand and combat the problem of over-consumption as individuals and collectively. Contributors include popular Western teachers, Asian masters, scholars, and practitioners such as: * Pema Chödrön--on what is actually happening at the moment we're "hooked," and how to get beyond that. * Joseph Goldstein--on how mindfulness training can help us stop "wanting to want." * Bhikshuni Thubten Chödrön--on how consumer mentality influences spiritual practice. * Judith Simmer-Brown--on how cultivating spiritually based activism and compassionate action can help us address the negative effects of consumerism. * Rita Gross--on how understanding moderation can curb overconsumption. * Santikaro Bhikkhu--on practicing generosity in a consumer world.

Hooligans, Ultras, Activists: Polish Football Fandom in Sociological Perspective (Football Research in an Enlarged Europe)
by Radosław KossakowskiThis book is the first comprehensive attempt to identify the deeper causes that have shaped contemporary behaviour patterns and motivations among football fans in Poland. Fan culture in Poland has long been based on a distinctively grassroots, spontaneous movements that ruled out any cooperation with local authorities and sports organizations. The activity of supporter groups has regularly failed to meet the principles set by official bodies, intentionally breaching the moral and legal standards of the day. Based on data derived from ethnographic fieldwork, content analysis of fan journals, magazines, social media and online forums, as well as a wide range of qualitative interviews conducted over the years, the book analyses the ways in which fandom culture in Poland has evolved: from its moderate beginnings in the shadows of a communist regime in the 1970’s, through the anomic, ‘uncivilized’ and pathological decade of the 1990’s, to the peculiar culture based on strong cohesion, capabilities of social mobilization and emerging 'resistance identity' in the 21st century. It thus provides a detailed analysis of Polish fandom’s multi-dimensional structure, and will be of interest to students and academics interested in the growing field of football research, as well as those researching the transformation of Central and Eastern Europe, or more generally in European Studies.

Hope: A Tragedy
by Shalom AuslanderSolomon Kugel wishes for nothing more than to be nowhere, to be in a place with no past, no history, no wars, no genocides. The rural town of Stockton, New York, is famous for nothing: No one was born there, no one died there, nothing of any import has ever happened there, which is exactly why Kugel decided to move his family there. To begin again. To start anew. But it isn't quite working out that way. His ailing mother stubbornly holds on to life, and won't stop reminiscing about the Nazi concentration camps she never actually suffered through. To complicate matters further, some lunatic is burning down farmhouses just like the one he bought, and he fears his is next. And when, one night, Kugel discovers history - a living, breathing, thought-to-be-dead specimen of history - hiding in his attic, bad very quickly becomes worse. Like nothing you've read before, the critically acclaimed Shalom Auslander's debut novel is a hilarious and disquieting examination of the burdens and abuse of history, propelled with unstoppable rhythm and filled with existential musings and mordant wit. 'Scabrous and determinedly iconoclastic . . . one of the funniest and most thought-provoking novels you'll read all year' Sunday Times 'A wonderful, twisted, trangressive, heartbreaking, true, and hugely funny book. It will make very many people angry. It will also make very many people very happy. ' A. L. Kennedy, author of Day 'Auslander writes like some contemporary comedic Jeremiah, thundering warnings of disaster and retribution. What makes him so terrifyingly funny is that he isn't joking. ' Howard Jacobson, author of The Finkler Question, winner of the Man Booker Prize 'Can the darkest events of the twentieth century and of all human history be used to show the folly of hope? And can the result be so funny that you burst out laughing again and again? If you doubt this is possible, read Hope: A Tragedy. You won't regret it. ' John Gray, author of Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals

Hope: A User's Manual
by MaryAnn McKibben DanaWhat hope is, what hope isn&’t, and how to find it in hopeless times. Hope is not optimism. It&’s not toxic positivity. It&’s not a promise of future success or progress. And it&’s definitely not something that can be reduced to a scripty-font platitude on an Instagram post. So what is it? One thing is certain: real hope demands that we do something with it. That we live it out. That we use hope to participate in a bigger story playing out behind the bleak world we see on the news or in our social media feeds every day. It doesn&’t matter whether you&’re a person of faith, or someone disillusioned with faith, or someone who hardly ever thinks about faith: if you&’re a human being who longs for a spiritual counternarrative to live by, this book points to one resilient enough to endure crises and crushing defeats. If you&’re tired of hearing about some heavenly hereafter amid the pressing need for justice here and now, this is a book about hope for this world—not the next. After exploring what hope isn&’t and then what it is, MaryAnn McKibben Dana reflects on the surprising place where hope is often found—in the messiness of our imperfect, flawed, beautiful human bodies. In the second half of the book, she talks about making hope real: sharing hope through stories, cultivating hope through simple practices, and nurturing hope in hopeless times—when only real hope can persevere.
Hope: The Dream We Carry
by Tia DeNoraThis book provides a concise, interdisciplinary perspective on the emotion and practice of ‘hope'. Based on the idea that hope is a dream that we carry in different ways, the five chapters draw on the author’s original research and align it with literature on the sociology of culture and emotion, to explore the concept in relation to cultural and community practices and mental health. The climate crisis, violence, hostility, pandemics, homelessness, displacement, conflict, slavery, economic hardship and economic downturn, loneliness, anxiety, mental illness – are intensifying. There is a need for hope. There is also a need to confront hope - what is hope and what can, and cannot, be achieved by hoping. This confrontation includes distinguishing hope from wishful thinking and blind optimism. Using examples from different spheres of social life, including health, religion, music therapy, migration and social displacement, the book sets the idea of hope in context of situations of uncertainty, challenge and pain, and goes on to highlight the practical application of these ideas and outline an agenda for further research on ‘hope'.

Hope After Faith: An Ex-Pastor's Journey from Belief to Atheism
by Jerry DewittAtheism's leading lights have long been intellectuals raised in the secular and academic worlds: Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and the late Christopher Hitchens.

By contrast, Jerry DeWitt was born and bred into the church and was in fact a Pentecostal preacher before arriving at atheism through an extraordinary dialogue with faith that spanned more than a quarter of a century. Hope After Faith is his account of that journey. DeWitt was a pastor in the town of DeRidder, Louisiana, and was a fixture of the community. In private, however, he'd begun to question his faith. Late one night in May 2011, a member of his flock called seeking prayer for her brother who had been in a serious accident. As DeWitt searched for the right words to console her, speech failed him, and he found that the faith which once had formed the cornerstone of his life had finally crumbled to dust. When it became public knowledge that DeWitt was now an atheist, he found himself shunned by much of DeRidder's highly religious community, losing nearly everything he'd known. DeWitt's struggle for identity and meaning mirrors the one currently facing millions of people around the world. With both agnosticism and atheism entering the mainstream-one in five Americans now claim no religious affiliation, according to a recent study-the moment has arrived for a new atheist voice, one that is respectful of faith and religious traditions yet warmly embraces a life free of religion, finding not skepticism and cold doubt but rather profound meaning and hope. Hope After Faith is the story of one man's evolution toward a committed and considered atheism, one driven by humanism, a profound moral dimension, and a happiness and self-confidence obtained through living free of fear.
