So much was on her mind, and her heart was flooded with emotions. She hoped the friendship she had made with Katie and Christy the past week during the Europe mission trip would last forever. She dreaded the flight back to the States, knowing that everything would be completely different when she returned home. While in England, Sierra's family had moved to a different state. She hated the thought of going to a new high school in the middle of her junior year, where everybody already had their cliques and boyfriends. The prospect of another dateless year made her heart sink. She wondered if she'd ever find love, and then in a London airport, she met Paul. Her heart, which had sunk so low, leapt! Only a Woman: There's a Hero in the Heart of Every Woman

by Terri Mcfaddin

Only a Woman deals with the felt need among women for surrender, growth, and service to the Lord. National conference speaker Terri McFaddin brings a motivational message for women to seek a deeper relationship with God by taking "radical action" for Him. While other books are centered around comforting and healing women, McFaddin recounts examples of women who reached beyond the traditional practice of Christianity "into biblical extremes designed to bring power, healing, and deliverance" to their lives -- and the lives of all around them. "Sooner or later you will find yourself searching for answers that can't be found at choir rehearsals and garden parties," says McFaddin, who offers clear answers here. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Ontological Arguments (Elements in the Philosophy of Religion)

This Element studies the most famous ontological arguments from Anselm, Descartes, Plantinga, and others besides. While the verdict is that ontological arguments don't work, they get us entangled in fun philosophical puzzles, from philosophy of religion to philosophy of language, from metaphysics to ethics, and beyond.

Onward Christian Soldiers?

by Clyde Wilcox Carin Robinson

Are groups such as the Moral Majority, the Christian Coalition, and the religious right the greatest threat to liberty since Hitler or the last defenders of religious freedom and family values in America? Clyde Wilcox tells us who they are, what their history has been in 20th-century American politics, and how they might organize themselves for future political effectiveness. He tackles the political dilemma of the proper role of religious groups in American politics and government while showing how the contemporary religious right does - and does not - fit into that context. They have money, influence, power - and they turn out to vote. They are credited with delivering a significant part of the Republicans' 1994 electoral success, foreshadowing their status as major players in the elections of 1996.

Onward Muslim Soldiers: How Jihad Still Threatens America and the West by Robert Spencer

Onward, Christian Soldiers

by Deal Hudson

Like a mighty army moves the church of God; Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod. We are not divided, all one body we. One in hope and doctrine, one in charity. -- From the nineteenth-century hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers" What keeps America a country of religious practice and traditional values? How has the U.S. avoided suc-cumbing to total secularism? The answer to these provocative questions is found in the religious commun-ities of America today: In the past thirty years, the religiously active voter has migrated to the Republican Party, and the story behind this shift, evidenced in the emergence of Evangelical dominance over mainstream Protestantism and the defeat of liberal Catholicism, is at the heart of this fascinating cultural history. In Onward, Christian Soldiers, the Washington insider who was at the vanguard of the sea change in religious and political history that propelled George W. Bush into the White House offers an intimate perspective on those remarkable years -- and their influence over the ones to come. Deal W. Hudson analyzes how, steadily over-coming age-old misjudgments and misunderstandings that separated them, conservative Catholics and Evangelical Christians drew together because of what they viewed as profound assaults on shared core beliefs. They became allies to battle the forces of secularization, relativism, and atheism. And together they forged a grassroots movement across America that astonished political activists and surprised commentators as well as members of traditional religious organizations. How, exactly, was this coalition achieved and who were its movers and shakers? What enabled them to deepen, enrich, and activate the resurgence of traditional values in society to make America radically different from the secularized Europe that was so widely believed to be on the verge of becoming the model for the United States? Deal W. Hudson details this phenomenon by examining the leading figures and institutions on both sides of the debate, exposing the dramatic encounters between those espousing fundamental Judeo-Christian beliefs and those heralding the "death of God" and the new age of secular humanism. Dealing with today's hot-button issues, Onward, Christian Soldiers provides an unprecedented look at the confrontation of the religious right with secularists in America, a confrontation that is not only timely but also timeless in its impact.

Oola for Christians: Find Balance in an Unbalanced World (Oola)

by Troy Amdahl Dave Braun

Oola is a "state of awesomeness.' When your life is balanced and growing, you are living the OolaLife. You were created to live that life—you were designed by God for greatness! Before you were even born, God placed within you a special gift that no one else has and a purpose that no one else can fulfill. It's not easy trying to live up to your true potential when life gets in the way. It's difficult to see the greatness within you when it becomes weighted down by the stress of a life out of balance. Even as a culture we are losing our way: we're forfeiting our health and self-esteem—37 percent of us are clinically obese; we're overcommitting and overspending—personal debt is at record high; we're not feeling the love and failing our relationships—46 percent of our marriages are ending in divorce; we're overworked and underappreciated—50 percent of us wake up each morning to face down a job we hate. On top of all that, we've forgotten how to have fun, our faith is weak, our hope is shaky and our Christian principles are constantly tested. Thankfully, the Bible has a lot to say about these things. The Oola principles incorporate biblical teachings into practical, effective platforms to help you overcome the world and create the awesome life you were meant to have. You'll learn how to avoid the 7 OolaBlockers that prevent you from accomplishing your goals and you'll learn how to apply the 7 OolaAccelerators that propel you forward toward your greatest potential. Plus, you'll learn how to create balance and fulfillment in your life by optimizing the 7 F's of Oola: Fitness, Finance, Family, Field (career), Faith, Friends, and Fun. Be a part of the 'Oola phenomenon' and experience that awesome feeling of living the OolaLife. God has built you for greatness. Why then settle for ordinary when extraordinary is within you? Start living the OolaLife today! "But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well." –Luke 12:31 (NIV)

Oorlog teen Okkultisme, Toorkuns en Vals Geloof

by Gabriel Agbo

by Gabriel Agbo

Open Heart, Open Mind: Awakening the Power of Essence Love

by Eric Swanson Tsoknyi Rinpoche

In Open Heart, Open Mind, Tsoknyi Rinpoche--one of the most beloved of the contemporary generation of Tibetan Buddhist meditation masters--explains that a life free of fear, pain, insecurity, and doubt is not only possible, it's our birthright. We long for peace, for the ability to love and be loved openly and freely, and for the confidence and clarity to meet the various challenges we face in our daily lives.Within each of us resides a spark of unparalleled brilliance, an unlimited capacity for warmth, openness, and courage, which Rinpoche identifies as "essence love." Timeless and imperishable, essence love is often layered over by patterns of behavior and belief that urge us to seek happiness in conditions or situations that never quite live up to their promise. Drawing on rarely discussed teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, Rinpoche describes how such patterns evolve and offers a series of meditation exercises to help us unravel them and, in the process, reawaken an energy and exuberance that can not only bring lasting fulfillment to our lives but ultimately serve to enliven and inspire the entire world, as well. With great humor, intelligence, and candor, Tsoknyi Rinpoche also details his own struggles to reconnect with essence love. Identified at an early age as the incarnation of a renowned Tibetan master and subjected to a rigorous monastic training, he ultimately renounced his vows, married, and is now the father of two daughters. As he recounts his own efforts to strike a balance between the promptings of his heart and an obligation to preserve and protect the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism, Rinpoche provides a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern life, and encourages each of us to rediscover the openness, fearlessness, and love that is the essence of our own life. From the Hardcover edition.

Open Hearts, Closed Doors: Immigration Reform and the Waning of Mainline Protestantism

by Nicholas T. Pruitt

A history of mainline Protestant responses to immigrants and refugees during the twentieth centuryOpen Hearts, Closed Doors uncovers the largely overlooked role that liberal Protestants played in fostering cultural diversity in America and pushing for new immigration laws during the forty years following the passage of the restrictive Immigration Act of 1924. These efforts resulted in the complete reshaping of the US cultural and religious landscape.During this period, mainline Protestants contributed to the national debate over immigration policy and joined the charge for immigration reform, advocating for a more diverse pool of newcomers. They were successful in their efforts, and in 1965 the quota system based on race and national origin was abolished. But their activism had unintended consequences, because the liberal immigration policies they supported helped to end over three centuries of white Protestant dominance in American society.Yet, Pruitt argues, in losing their cultural supremacy, mainline Protestants were able to reassess their mission. They rolled back more strident forms of xenophobia, substantively altering the face of mainline Protestantism and laying foundations for their responses to today’s immigration debates. More than just a historical portrait, this volume is a timely reminder of the power of religious influence in political matters.

Open Mind: View and Meditation in the Lineage of Lerab Linga

by His Holiness the Dalai Lama B. Alan Wallace Eva Natanya

Get to know the teachings and legacy of the celebrated Lerab Lingpa, the influential confidant of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama, in this collection of practical instructions on the Great Perfection and reflections on the nonsectarian (rimé) approach to Tibetan Buddhism.Lerab Lingpa (1856–1926), also known as Tertön Sogyal, was one of the great Dzogchen (Great Perfection) masters of the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries and a close confidant and guru of the Thirteenth Dalai Lama. This volume contains translations by B. Alan Wallace of two works that are representative of the lineage of this great “treasure revealer,” or tertön. The first work, composed by Lerab Lingpa himself, is The Vital Essence of Primordial Consciousness. It presents pith instructions on all the stages of the Great Perfection, which is the highest form of meditation and practice in the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. In this practice, the meditator comes to see directly the ultimate nature of consciousness itself. The work guides the reader from the common preliminaries through to the highest practices of the Great Perfection—the direct crossing over and the achievement of the rainbow body. The second work, Selected Essays on Old and New Views of the Secret Mantrayana, is a collection of seven essays by two of Lerab Lingpa’s close disciples, Dharmasara and Jé Tsultrim Zangpo. Dharmasara wrote six of the essays, providing detailed, erudite explanations of the compatibility among the theories and practices of Great Perfection, Mahamudra (a parallel practice tradition found in other schools), and the Madhyamaka view, especially as these are interpreted by the Indian pandita Candrakirti, the Nyingma master Longchen Rabjam, and Tsongkhapa, founder of the Geluk school of Tibetan Buddhism. The one essay by Jé Tsultrim Zangpo (a.k.a. Tulku Tsullo), “An Ornament of the Enlightened View of Samantabhadra,” contextualizes the Great Perfection within the broader framework of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism and then elucidates all the stages of practice of the Great Perfection, unifying the profound path of cutting through and the vast path of the spontaneous actualization of the direct crossing over. This volume will be of great interest for all those interested in the theory and practice of the Great Perfection and the way it relates to the wisdom teachings of Tsongkhapa and others in the new translation schools of Tibetan Buddhism.

Open Minded: Working Out the Logic of the Soul

by Jonathan Lear

Freud is discredited, so we do not have to think about the darker strains of unconcious motivation anymore. We know what moves our political leaders, so we don't have to look closely at their thinking either. In fact, the author argues, everywhere we look in contemporary culture, knowingness has taken the place of thought. This book is an assault on that deadening trend, especially as it affects our deepest attempts to understand the human psyche - in philosophy and psychoanalysis. It explodes the widespread notion that we already know the problems and proper methods in these fields and so no longer need to ask crucial questions about the structure of human subjectivity.
