Montesquieu & the Despotic Ideas of Europe: An Interpretation of The Spirit of the Laws

by Vickie B. Sullivan

Montesquieu is rightly famous as a tireless critic of despotism, which he associates in his writings overtly with Asia and the Middle East and not with the apparently more moderate Western models of governance found throughout Europe. However, a careful reading of Montesquieu reveals that he recognizes a susceptibility to despotic practices in the West—and that the threat emanates not from the East, but from certain despotic ideas that inform such Western institutions as the French monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church. Nowhere is Montesquieu’s critique of the despotic ideas of Europe more powerful than in his enormously influential The Spirit of the Laws, and Vickie B. Sullivan guides readers through Montesquieu’s sometimes veiled, yet sharply critical accounts of Machiavelli, Hobbes, Aristotle, and Plato, as well as various Christian thinkers. He finds deleterious consequences, for example, in brutal Machiavellianism, in Hobbes’s justifications for the rule of one, in Plato’s reasoning that denied slaves the right of natural defense, and in the Christian teachings that equated heresy with treason and informed the Inquisition. In this new reading of Montesquieu’s masterwork, Sullivan corrects the misconception that it offers simple, objective observations, showing it instead to be a powerful critique of European politics that would become remarkably and regrettably prescient after Montesquieu’s death when despotism wound its way through Europe.

A Month of Sundays: Thirty-One Days of Wrestling with Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John

by Eugene H. Peterson

From the translator of The Message, thirty-one ruminations drawn from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.Eugene Peterson was quite concerned about the language we use between Sundays. He illustrated this passion in his writings and weekly sermons. A Month of Sundays is a devotional collection featuring excerpts of Eugene's Sunday sermons arranged into thoughtful readings for every day of the month, drawn from the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The four gospels give us snapshots of the earthly life and ministry of Jesus. Month with Jesus, A: 31 Days with a Surprising Savior

by Gary Holloway

These simple but profound reflections on stories from the Gospels invite Christians to look afresh at the One they follow daily. Why another book on Jesus? Surely if there is one Bible character we know, it is Jesus. But maybe the same old thing of "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" in our churches has blinded us to who he really was and really is. Perhaps our own walk with him is not what it should be because we feel too comfortable with him—or at least of our picture of him.A Month with Jesus is an invitation to spend a month with the biblical Jesus, the One who surprised his contemporaries. By looking at him through their eyes, maybe we too can be surprised. Surprised enough to shake us out of our old habits. Surprised enough to understand him as we never have before. Surprised enough to follow. Surprised enough that this familiar story—the greatest story of all—is no longer "the same old thing."

Monument Eternal

by Alice Coltrane

The long-awaited reissue of Alice Coltrane’s original spiritual teachings and reflections, which provide powerful insight into her transcendent music, cherished by millions across the globe ALICE COLTRANE (1937–2007) was a composer, master of various musical instruments, improviser, spiritual leader, and wife of John Coltrane. Throughout her adult life, she worked within and combined a broad range of musical genres, including gospel, R&B, bebop, free jazz, Indian devotional song, and Western art music. She recorded more than twenty full-length albums for Impulse and Warner Bros. Her music speaks to her experiences as a child playing for church congregations in Detroit; the transcendent and mind-bending avant-garde improvisations she performed with her husband John Coltrane; and her religious pilgrimages to India. When Monument Eternal was originally published in 1977, Alice Coltrane was living in Southern California and had recently become a swami, building and nurturing an alternative spiritual community. In these pages, she says that the book is “based upon the soul’s realizations in Absolute Consciousness and its spiritual relationships with the Supreme One.” Monument Eternal offers deep insight into Coltrane’s tremendous musical output, and shines a light on her transformation from Alice McLeod, Detroit church organist and bebopper, to sage thought leader Swami Turiyasangitananda. It also reflects the extraordinary fluidity of American religious customs in the mid and late twentieth century. Akashic’s long-awaited reissue of Monument Eternal includes a new foreword by Ashley Kahn.

Monumental Matters: The Power, Subjectivity, and Space of India's Mughal Architecture

by Santhi Kavuri-Bauer

Built in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, India's Mughal monuments--including majestic forts, mosques, palaces, and tombs, such as the Taj Mahal--are world renowned for their grandeur and association with the Mughals, the powerful Islamic empire that once ruled most of the subcontinent. In Monumental Matters, Santhi Kavuri-Bauer focuses on the prominent role of Mughal architecture in the construction and contestation of the Indian national landscape. She examines the representation and eventual preservation of the monuments, from their disrepair in the colonial past to their present status as protected heritage sites. Drawing on theories of power, subjectivity, and space, Kavuri-Bauer's interdisciplinary analysis encompasses Urdu poetry, British landscape painting, imperial archaeological surveys, Indian Muslim identity, and British tourism, as well as postcolonial nation building, World Heritage designations, and conservation mandates. Since Independence, the state has attempted to construct a narrative of Mughal monuments as symbols of a unified, secular nation. Yet modern-day sectarian violence at these sites continues to suggest that India's Mughal monuments remain the transformative spaces--of social ordering, identity formation, and national reinvention--that they have been for centuries.

Monuments to Faith: Ukrainian Churches in Manitoba

by Basil Rotoff Roman Yereniuk Stella Hryniuk

Ukrainians first came to Canada a century ago, seeking a new life on the western prairies. They brought with them an ancient and rich cultural tradition, deeply rooted in Christianity. The most visible symbol of this tradition is the Ukrainian church with its distinctive cupolas. As soon as the settlers were established in the new land, they began to reshape their environment by building churches in the styles they remembered from their homeland. In this richly illustrated volume, the authors trace the continuity of tradition in achitecture, art, and community life from Ukraine to the parishes of the Manitoba prairie. In a detailed examination of the exteriors and interiors of forty-nine churches, the book establishes a typology of Ukrainian church designs. Biographies of the architects, master builders, and artists are included, along with a guide to the art and architecture of a Ukrainian church.

Moods

by Yoel Hoffmann Peter Cole

Yoel Hoffmann--"Israel's celebrated avant-garde genius" (The Forward)--supplies the magic missing link between the infinitesimal and the infinite Part novel and part memoir, Yoel Hoffmann's Moods is flooded with feelings, evoked by his family, losses, loves, the soul's hidden powers, old phone books, and life in the Galilee--with its every scent, breeze, notable dog, and odd neighbor. Carrying these shards is a general tenderness, accentuated by a new dimension brought along by "that great big pill of Prozac." Beautifully translated by Peter Cole, Moods is fiction for lovers of poetry and poetry for lovers of fiction--a small marvel of a book, and with its pockets of joy, a curiously cheerful book by an author who once compared himself to "a praying mantis inclined to melancholy."
