Avoiding the Greener Grass Syndrome: How to Grow Affair-Proof Hedges Around Your Marriage
by Nancy C. AndersonExtramarital affairs are certainly not the social taboo that they once were, and may be more prevalent now than ever. Unfortunately, Christians are not exempt. With the anonymity of the Internet and the privacy of personal mobile phones, the temptation to cheat on one's spouse has fertile ground to grow. After straying to the other side of this marital fence--and returning to find forgiveness and restoration--Anderson brings this practical book about predicting and preventing an extramarital affair. Based on the principle that the grass is always greener when it's watered, Avoiding the Greener Grass Syndrome focuses on how to grow a beautiful marriage by establishing six protective hedges around it.This second edition includes a new chapter on repairing marriage following infidelity, as well as an appendix considering the Andersons' own marriage before and after the affair from Ron's point of view.
Avoiding the Pitfalls of Familiarity
by Mark T. BarclayBecause Jesus grew up in Nazareth and the people knew his whole family, when He came to teach in their synagogue, the people discounted Jesus' preaching, because they were too familiar with him as just one of their neighbors who was a carpenter, not a "learned" religious leader of their day. They didn't respect Jesus as being qualified to teach them the word. The same thing can happen today to us as church members if we lose our first love -- Jesus. If a member of a congregation speaks against the minister with the intent to take away the esteem he has in the hearts of the congregation by defaming and standing against him, the minister is reduced to just another peer, rather than a leader. This causes desention and strife, since the devil's work is being done. When a person doesn't sit at someone's feet to learn, he will sit at his own feet, foolishly leaning on his own understanding, and eventually being his own adviser, making him proud and unteachable. The sin of familiarity is as dangerous as a plague, because it can travel from heart to heart, mouth to mouth and head to head, weakening and spiritually killing the congregation. This sin can show up in life possessionally, vocationally or in marriages when the novelty wears off, because a person has the discontent of familiarity. This sin is nothing new. There are examples from the Bible -- both the Old and New Testament that illustrate this sin of familiarity. Idolatry can result when the sin of familiarity isn't dealt with. Other sins such as jealousy or envy, and greed and dishonesty can begin to rule an excessively familiar person. The author gives local church examples of people who can become too familiar. As the book progresses, the author shows how, with verses of scripture to rid yourself of this sin or to guard against becomming too familiar in the first place.

Awaiting the City: Poverty, Ecology, and Morality in Today's Political Economy
by Tom Pratt Chad BrandPeople of faith have always been on search for the homeland, first promised to Abraham in light of the Babylonian civilization he left. That future hope was reinterpreted by Jesus and taken up by St. Augustine in The City of God, reinterpreted again by John Calvin in Geneva, and given a final form by the Puritan pilgrims who came to America to establish the City upon a Hill. Fundamental to this quest for a just, holy civilization has been the progress of humankind on the earth in light of the mandate to fill and rule over it. Authors Chad Brand and Tom Pratt discuss that progress as they answer the vital questions for praxis: How should biblically oriented Christians think of and work toward God's justice along the way? How can we steer between a utopian vision and a limited vision to a new rational compassion?

Awake In The Heartland: The Ecstasy of What is
by Joan TollifsonThis is a book about waking up. It's not about techniques, dogmas, traditions, exotic states or future attainments. Rather, it points to the simplicity and wonder of what is, as it is. This is a book about discovering perfection in imperfection, and the extraordinary in the ordinary. It's about enlightenment, not a future attainment, but here and now. It celebrates life as it is, from the beautiful to the horrific, inviting the reader to see that everything is spiritual, and that nothing is a mistake. If there seems to be a gap between what the enlightenment books describe and what you find in your own life, if you still think enlightenment is something that will happen to you in the future (or not at all), if you're still chasing experiences or self-improvement, then this book may be just what you need to see that what you seek is already here. There is a vibrant energy that emanates from the pages of this book that cannot help but resonate with and stir the same essence in the reader and awaken them to the ecstasy of what is-their own true nature. Because the personal story is so beautifully interwoven, the book answers the question so often asked by seekers: "Yes, I under stand BUT...How do I live my life?" Joan is constantly showing the reader, by personal example, that life lives itself as IS no matter WHAT appears. I recommend it. - Sailor Bob Adamson
Awake in the Dark
by Shira NaymanBold and deeply affecting, Awake in the Dark is a provocative and haunting work of fiction about who we are and how we are formed by history. These luminous stories portray the contemporary lives of the children of Holocaust victims and perpetrators as they struggle with the legacy of their parents -- their questions of identity, family, and faith. Awake in the Dark is peopled by characters embarking on journeys of self-discovery; they unearth the past and the secrets that shaped them. In "The House on Kronenstrasse," a woman returns to Germany to find her childhood home; in "The Porcelain Monkey," the shocking origins of an Orthodox Jewish woman's faith are revealed; in "The Lamp," the harrowing experiences of a young woman leave her with the perfect daughter and a strange light; and in "Dark Urgings of the Blood," a patient is convinced that she shares a disturbing history with her psychiatrist. Rendered in clear, unaffected prose, Shira Nayman's powerful and heartbreaking collection explores the burden of history. Awake in the Dark is an illuminating and startling book about the disguises we don, the secrets we keep, and the consequences of our silences.

Awake in the World: Teachings from Yoga and Buddhism for Living an Engaged Life

The essence of yoga and Buddhist practice is opening the heart--our own and the heart of the world. With that awareness, Stone encourages us to get involved in our communities, to speak out when we see wrongdoing, and to find ways of helping others.

Awake, Not Woke: A Christian Response to the Cult of Progressive Ideology
by Noelle MeringThe long-simmering crisis that grips our culture has exploded in recent years, leaving us divided and intransigent. Discourse seems futile when we are no longer a people with shared principles or even a shared understanding of reality. What seems obvious to one person is patently absurd to the next. This collapse of meaning is not accidental. It has been plotted and documented for decades, and now presents in its current form as Woke ideology.
Awake to the Moment: An Introduction To Theology
by Laurel C. Schneider Stephen G. Ray Jr. editorsMost introductory textbooks in theology see their primary task as explaining Christian doctrines that no one quite understands anymore. While this is one of theology's jobs, it is by no means the only, nor even the most important, one. Theology has also been called to change the world, to help people connect deeply rooted beliefs about the world's source and goal to questions of personal meaning and communal thriving. Theology is here to help us make sense of the complex, flawed world into which we've been thrust and to assist us in our attempt to love our neighbors and live toward the common good. For more than forty years, the Workgroup on Constructive Theology has brought the liberal and liberationist theological traditions into creative encounter with lived human experience. In this introduction to the methods and tasks of theology, they invite a new generation of readers, many who will have little or no exposure to Christian doctrine, to see theology as a partner in the struggle for a better world. They demonstrate how theological ideas have "legs," playing themselves out not only in religious communities but in the public square as well. Theology, the authors tell us, is constructive when it joins in God's work of building human lives and human societies. Readers will learn to think about all of life in light of their religious commitments and to see theology as an essential tool for a life well lived.
