Now and Not Yet: Theology and Mission in EzraNehemiah (New Studies in Biblical Theology #Volume 57)
by Dean R. UlrichFor various reasons, the books of Ezra and Nehemiah have suffered comparative neglect in Old Testament scholarship. However, as Dean Ulrich demonstrates, EzraNehemiah as a literary unit is part of the Christian Bible that tells God's grand story of saving activity. It focuses not so much on how to be an effective leader but on how to be a godly participant in God's story. God may be concerned about human conduct, but the moral imperatives appear in the larger context of God's acts and promises. However exemplary Ezra and Nehemiah the men may be, EzraNehemiah has an interest in how God's people contribute to building the new (and New) JerusalemGod's redeemed community that is bigger than any single person. Missionthat is, participation in God's purpose for his worldfactors into the message of these books. In this NSBT volume, Ulrich views EzraNehemiah as the record of the beginning of a new work of God among his people after the exile. This new work, which led eventually to the first coming of Jesus, enables Gods people to be restored presently ('now') in their relationship with God. Such restoration involves a combination of hope in God's promises ('not yet') and obedience to his instruction concerned with mission. Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead.

Now Choose Life: Theology and Ethics in Deuteronomy (New Studies in Biblical Theology #Volume 6)
by Gary MillarThough written thousands of years ago, the book of Deuteronomy is unmatched in its relevance for the affluent Western church of today. Moses' words were meant to equip God's people for living godly lives in a prosperous, pluralistic world. The cultural changes now taking place in our own social setting make the parallel between Israel and the church—and what Deuteronomy has to say—both pertinent and instructive. This New Studies in Biblical Theology volume offers a significant study of Deuteronomy that recovers this Scripture's vibrant message for the contemporary Christian community. Showing the major contribution that Deuteronomy makes to our understanding of the Bible as a whole, J. Gary Millar explores Deuteronomy's ethical teaching in the light of its most important theological themes: covenant, journey, law, the nations and human nature. His perceptive analysis reveals the power with which Deuteronomy calls God's covenant people, from ancient Israelites to modern-day Christians, to hear God's voice and do his will. Whether read for its critical study of Scripture or for its practical insights into living faithfully today, this book will be a valuable resource for school, church and home.

‘Now I Know’: Five Centuries of Aqedah Exegesis
by Albert van der HeideThis book describes how medieval Jewish Bible scholars sought to answer the question of what is meant by the Angel’s message from God to Abraham: ‘Now I Know’, as written in Genesis 22 verse 12. It examines these scholars’ comments on the nineteen verses in Genesis that tell the story of Abraham’s readiness to sacrifice his own son Isaac, the Aqedat Yiṣḥaq. It explores the answers they found to the question of what, indeed, this story is trying to tell us. Is it a drastic way to condemn the practice of child sacrifice? Does it call for replacing human sacrifices with animal sacrifices? Is it a trial by which the Almighty tests the fidelity of one of His followers? Or is it His way to show the world the nature of true belief? The book starts with an introduction to familiarize readers with the many and varied manifestations of the Aqedah theme in Jewish culture and with the developments of medieval Jewish Bible exegesis in general. Next, it offers translations and analyses of the classical medieval Jewish Bible commentaries that deal with the exegesis of Genesis 22, exploring the many angles from which the Aqedah story has been understood. No less than five centuries of medieval Aqedah exegesis are reviewed, from Saadya (882-942) to Isaac Abrabanel (1437-1508). These texts from the commentaries are combined with hermeneutical key passages by Moses Maimonides, Joseph Ibn Kaspi, Ḥasdai Crescas, and others, which were familiar to the minds of the exegetes, or which, conversely, reflect the impact of biblical Aqedah exegesis on religious thought. Together, the passages discussed illustrate the growth and development of Jewish Bible exegesis in dialogue with the rabbinic sources and with the various trends of thought and theology of their times. The consistent focus on the Aqedah constitutes a unifying theme, while the insights presented here greatly advance our understanding of the various developments in medieval Jewish Bible exegesis.

Now Waiting: Hope for Today When All You Want Is Tomorrow
by Sarah JohnsonYour invitation to wait well in a world obsessed with having everything right now. No one likes to wait. But no matter how hassle-free the world around us has become, some things take time. Still, beginnings are fun—finish lines, thrilling. We love and celebrate those mountaintop moments. Life in the middle, however, is often hard and boring, certainly nothing to celebrate. Yet Sarah has discovered that the best parts of life can actually be those very moments between where we are and where we want to be. Waiting is a vital part of our stories, and what we do with our times of waiting matter. Life isn’t about navigating around seasons of waiting. It is learning to embrace them. We have spent too much time believing that we are waiting because God has forgotten about us. God can teach us what it means to fully trust him with our lives if we are willing. In Now Waiting, Sarah explains how you can: • remain confident in the goodness of God when your season of waiting leaves you feeling discouraged, frustrated, and left out of God’s plan; • embrace seasons of waiting as a time to thrive, not just to endure; • and find hope in the promises of God for today and tomorrow, even when things aren’t going the way you planned. Stop believing the lie that everyone else is living a better story. Live fully convinced of God’s plans for you, even during your next season of waiting.

Now You See Me: How I Forgave the Unforgivable
by Kathy SandersOn April 19, 1995, Kathy Sanders' life was changed forever when a bomb exploded and destroyed the Alfred P. Murrah building in Oklahoma City, killing her two grandsons Chase and Colton. For months, Kathy struggled with coping and wondered if the God she'd worshipped all her life even existed. After battling bitterness and contemplating suicide, she turned to the Lord and asked what He'd have her do. The answer was clear: Forgive your enemies. Thus Kathy forged a friendship with Terry Nichols, one of the men convicted in the bombing, via phone conversations, letters, and even face-to-face meetings. She also began searching for answers about what happened that fateful day in April and found opportunities to cultivate relationships with Nichols' children, mother, sister, wife, and ex-wife in separate turns. She demonstrated the same type of warmth to family members of Timothy McVeigh, the second man convicted of orchestrating the bombing. Her courageous efforts of extending compassion and grace gave her peace and removed the bitterness from her life. With photos, interviews, and actual letters exchanged between Kathy and Terry Nichols, Now You See Me tells the story of one woman who walked the road less traveled and forgave the unforgivable.
