Persuasive Apologetics: The Art of Handling Tough Questions without Pushing People Away

by Jeffrey M. Robinson

We cannot love others well without speaking the truthLoving our neighbors well includes engaging in robust conversations that destabilize false belief systems. In addressing the mind, will, and emotions of actual, complex people, Christian believers must develop various approaches to meet diverse personalities and multiple connection points. In Persuasive Apologetics, pastor and professor Jeffrey M. Robinson explores what's below the surface of intellectual-sounding objections to Christianity. He shows what it means to contend for the truth through real-life examples of communicating with those who hold differing beliefs. Robinson covers foundational and practical issues, such as • the importance of demeanor in being persuasive • various apologetic approaches • the influence of worldview presuppositions • using undercutting defeaters to expose faulty thinking • causes of nonbelief • the historical Jesus compared with figureheads of competing belief systems • the hope that Jesus offers Persuasive Apologetics will challenge serious seekers to peel back the layers of skeptical arguments and equip committed Christians looking to hone their apologetics skills.

Pesach for the Rest of Us: Making the Passover Seder Your Own

by Marge Piercy

Every year, poet and novelist Marge Piercy creates her own Passover seder with a group of family and friends. Babies have been born and grown up, friends have moved or divorced, but the principals continue to gather in her rustic Cape Cod home to participate in a seder that Piercy takes joy in tweaking each spring to make it more meaningful. In this journey through the ritual, Piercy coaxes us toward “a significant contemporary interpretation, rather than an emphasis on what is strictly ‘correct’ or traditional. ” She reminisces about her grandmother, who thought herself unworthy to lead a seder because of her limited Hebrew but presided “morally” at the table; she urges adding an orange to the seder plate; she even describes her heroic efforts to make her own gefilte fish (an experiment not to be repeated). Piercy offers her distinct slant on each element of the feast and provides dozens of her own wonderful recipes, which she delivers in the same warm, commanding voice as is heard in her poems and prose: “When I told Ira that I was going to explain how to cook matzoh brei, he thought I was crazy. Everybody knows how to make matzoh brei, he said. But I am of the opinion that there is no longer anything that everybody knows how to cook. ” It is in that spirit–no question too simple–that Piercy welcomes readers to her kind of seder: a homemade and personal affair, the kind we all wish we could attend. This charming and instructive book of Passover wisdom, brimming with favorite dishes and Marge Piercy’s own moving Passover poems and blessings, invites us to look at an important Jewish ritual in a whole new way.

Peter Abelard: Philosophy and Christianity in the Middle Ages

by Leif Grane

Originally published in 1970, Peter Abelard provides an exploration into the social and religious background to the story of Abelard and Heloise. The book presents the twelfth century as an age of renaissance, which saw the revival of Greek philosophy and Roman law, a renaissance just as important as that which was to come three centuries later. Through an examination of the life of Peter Abelard, the book offers an insight into this age of enlightenment in which dialects flourished and religious thought began to break away from the bonds of traditionalism. Peter Abelard will appeal to those with an interest in religious and social history, medieval history, and the story of Abelard and Heloise.

Peter -- False Disciple and Apostate according to Saint Matthew: False Disciple And Apostate According To Saint Matthew

by Robert H. Gundry

In this highly original book Robert Gundry argues that the ways in which Matthew portrays the apostle Peter fit the description of false disciples and apostates elsewhere in Matthew’s Gospel. After surveying various wide-ranging assessments of Matthew’s portrayal of Peter, Gundry offers a brand-new analysis, examining every Matthean passage where Peter’s name occurs as well as passages where Matthew apparently omitted the name though it occurs in his sources. Gundry places Matthew’s portrayal of Peter within the framework of two major, distinctive themes in the First Gospel -- the church as a mixed body of true and false disciples and persecution as exposing false discipleship.Gundry uses this investigation to support his claim that Matthew portrays Peter as a false disciple and apostate, like Judas Iscariot, and that Peter’s denials of Jesus rule him out of God’s kingdom.

Peter L. Berger on Religion: The Social Reality of Religion (Key Thinkers in the Study of Religion)

by Titus Hjelm

Peter L. Berger on Religion provides an overview and critical assessment of the work of one of the most influential sociologists of the 20th century.Situating Berger’s writings on religion and secularisation in the broader framework of social constructionism, the book argues that neither he nor the research influenced by him consistently followed the constructionist paradigm. This assessment is informed by a close examination of The Sacred Canopy (1967), in particular. The volume also offers a Berger‑inspired constructionist framework for the study of religion. This book is an excellent resource for students and researchers interested in the intersection of religion and social theory.

Peter, Paul & Jacob

by Jonathan Mitchell

A VITAL PERSPECTIVE flowing from the ancestral wells of first generation Christianity This volume is a collection of commentaries on nine letters in the New Testament: one by Peter, seven by Paul, and one by Jacob ~ also known as James Recent scholarship and the continual dynamic of the Spirit have emerged to present a clearer View of the original springs from which the faith has flowed. Ad fontes: to the sources, Here we engage conversations with the ancestors as we wrestle With the interpretation of these Scriptures as they applied to them and as they are now appropriate to our time Over the past nineteen centuries of the translation and interpretation of the Greek texts, divergent and partisan views have caused an accumulation of rubble which filled in the wells of the New Testament manuscripts with earth" cutting off access to the original "springs," The flow of the Living Water from many verses and passages has been blocked. Genesis 26 records Isaac digging again the wells that Abraham had dug The envious Philistines had filled them in With earth. cutting off their supply and flow of life Like lsaac, each succeeding generation must endeavour to re-dig the wells and reopen the providential springs to release a fresh flow of the Living Word to the land. The interpretation and comments of this volume are based upon a comprehensive translation of the New Testament by the author THE NEW TESTAMENT God's Message of Goodness, Ease and Well-being Which Brings God '5 Gifts of His Spirit, His Life His Grace, His Power, His Fairness, His Peace and His Love * The reader is given multiple renderings of the Greek texts * The perspective is relevant to the early cultural and historical setting * Comments on each letter begin With a concise introduction * Critical attention is given to the Significance of the Greek verb tenses * Each verse is presented in bold face for easy reading * Alternate renderings are parenthetically inserted in light face * Multiple references are made to other NT letters and the four gospels * Additional quotes from various commentators are also Cited About the Author Jonathan Mitchell is an author speaker and translator of the Greek New testament He holds a master's degree in Anthropology from NAU and is a frequent guest teacher at conferences He resides With his family in Arizona. Peter Paul Rubens and the Counter-Reformation Crisis of the Beati moderni (Sanctity in Global Perspective)

by Ruth S. Noyes

Peter Paul Rubens and the Crisis of the Beati Moderni takes up the question of the issues involved in the formation of recent saints - or Beati moderni (modern Blesseds) as they were called - by the Jesuits and Oratorians in the new environment of increased strictures and censorship that developed after the Council of Trent with respect to legal canonization procedures and cultic devotion to the saints. Ruth Noyes focuses particularly on how the new regulations pertained to the creation of emerging cults of those not yet canonized, the so-called Beati moderni, such as Jesuit founders Francis Xavier and Ignatius Loyola, and Filippo Neri, founder of the Oratorians. Centrally involved in the book is the question of the fate and meaning of the two altarpiece paintings commissioned by the Oratorians from Peter Paul Rubens. The Congregation rejected his first altarpiece because it too specifically identified Filippo Neri as a cult figure to be venerated (before his actual canonization) and thus was caught up in the politics of cult formation and the papacy’s desire to control such pre-canonization cults. The book demonstrates that Rubens' second altarpiece, although less overtly depicting Neri as a saint, was if anything more radical in the claims it made for him. Peter Paul Rubens and the Crisis of the Beati Moderni offers the first comparative study of Jesuit and Oratorian images of their respective would-be saints, and the controversy they ignited across Church hierarchies. It is also the first work to examine provocative Philippine imagery and demonstrate how its bold promotion specifically triggered the first wave of curial censure in 1602.

Peter Singer and Christian Ethics

by Charles C. Camosy

Interaction between Peter Singer and Christian ethics, to the extent that it has happened at all, has been unproductive and often antagonistic. Singer sees himself as leading a 'Copernican Revolution' against a sanctity of life ethic, while many Christians associate his work with a 'culture of death. ' Charles Camosy shows that this polarized understanding of the two positions is a mistake. While their conclusions about abortion and euthanasia may differ, there is surprising overlap in Christian and Singerite arguments, and disagreements are interesting and fruitful. Furthermore, it turns out that Christians and Singerites can even make common cause, for instance in matters such as global poverty and the dignity of non-human animals. Peter Singer and Christian ethics are far closer than almost anyone has imagined, and this book is valuable to those who are interested in fresh thinking about the relationship between religious and secular ethics.
