The Power and The Glory: Inside the Dark Heart of John Paul II's Vatican
by David YallopJohn Paul II and the dark heart of the Catholic Church... In 1984 David Yallops In Gods Name changed the way that the world looked at the Vatican. In The Power and The Glory David Yallop returns to Rome with another explosive story: the true history of the papacy of John Paul II. From the first moment of his papacy, Karol Wojtyla sought political influence and a role on the world stage. At the dawn of the twenty-first century, he was a leader to millions of Catholics at a time of tremendous change. Promising a renewed church, he was the first media Pope and travelled around the world to preach his message. It is said that he was central in the fall of Soviet Eastern Europe, in particular within his own homeland of Poland. But has the real truth of this Papacy been revealed? The Power & the Glory explores the continued financial scandal involving theVatican bank, the mafia, Freemasonry, illegal money laundering and arms sales. Exposes the true extent of the Pope's failure to control the child abuse scandal. Contains explosive revelations from the CIA, the KGB, the Polish secret service and the most secretive place on earth, the Vatican itself. Tells for the first time John Paul II's real involvement in the fall of the Iron Curtain and the liberation of Poland. Uncovers the myth of the Holy Alliance between Reagan's America and the Vatican.

Power and the Holy in the Age of the Investiture Conflict: A Brief History With Documents
by Maureen C. MillerHistorians tracing the emerging division between church and state in the West have long recognized the importance of the eleventh-century Gregorian reform movement and the investiture conflict — events that reached a dramatic climax in Pope Gregory VII’s excommunication of Emperor Henry IV. In her introduction to this ground-breaking volume, Miller recasts the narrative of reform and the investiture conflict — traditionally portrayed as an elitist struggle between church and state — in terms of a broad shift in conceptions of the nature of power and the holy. The volume brings together a wide selection of compelling documents — many of which have been largely unavailable — that allows students to place the investiture conflict within the wider context of social and political change in medieval Europe. Document headnotes, a chronology, a selected bibliography, and questions for consideration provide further pedagogical support.

Power, Authority, and the Anabaptist Tradition (Center Books in Anabaptist Studies)
by Benjamin W. Redekop and Calvin W. RedekopFounded in part on a rejection of "worldly" power and the use of force, Anabaptism carried with it the promise of redemptive power. Yet the attempt to banish worldly power to the margins of the Christian community has been fraught with dilemmas, contradictions, and, at times, blatant abuses of authority. In this groundbreaking book, Benjamin W. Redekop, Calvin W. Redekop, and their coauthors draw on classic and contemporary thinking to confront the issue of power and authority in the Anabaptist-Mennonite community. From the power relationships of the sixteenth-century Peasants' War to issues of contemporary sexuality, the topics of Power, Authority, and the Anabaptist Tradition are sure to interest a wide audience.Contributors: Stephen C. Power in the Portrayal: Representations of Jews and Muslims in Eleventh- and Twelfth-century Islamic Spain
by Ross BrannPower in the Portrayal unveils a fresh and vital perspective on power relations in eleventh- and twelfth-century Muslim Spain as reflected in historical and literary texts of the period. Employing the methods of the new historical literary study in looking at a range of texts, Ross Brann reveals the paradoxical relations between the Andalusi Muslim and Jewish elites in an era when long periods of tolerance and respect were punctuated by outbreaks of tension and hostility. The examined Arabic texts reveal a fragmented perception of the Jew in eleventh-century al-Andalus. They depict seemingly contradictory figures at whose poles are an intelligent, skilled, and noble Jew deserving of homage and a vile, stupid, and fiendish enemy of God and Islam. For their part, the Hebrew and Judeo-Arabic texts display a deep-seated reluctance to portray Muslims in any light at all. Brann cogently demonstrates that these representations of Jews and Muslims--each of which is concerned with issues of sovereignty and the exercise of power--reflect the shifting, fluctuating, and ambivalent relations between elite members of two of the ethno-religious communities of al-Andalus. Brann's accessible prose is enriched by his splendid translations; the original texts are also included. This book is the first to study the construction of social meaning in Andalusi Arabic, Judeo-Arabic, and Hebrew literary texts and historical chronicles. The novel approach illuminates nuances of respect, disinterest, contempt, and hatred reflected in the relationship between Muslims and Jews in medieval Spain.

Power in the Pulpit: How to Prepare and Deliver Expository Sermons

It&’s still used in Bible schools and seminaries today, and it shows no signs of slowing down: Power in the Pulpit is an ideal introduction to preaching. Dr. Jerry Vines and Dr. Jim Shaddix have achieved a balanced approach to sermon preparation in Power in the Pulpit. This primer combines the perspective of a pastor of forty years with that of someone who devotes daily time to training pastors in the context of theological education. It offers practical preaching instruction from a tradition that sees biblical exposition as a paramount and frequent event in the life of the local church. Power in the Pulpit is the combined work of Dr. Vines's two earlier publications on preaching: A Practical Guide to Sermon Preparation (Moody Publishers, 1985) and A Guide to Effective Sermon Delivery (Moody Publishers, 1986). Dr. Shaddix carefully organized and supplemented the material to offer this useful resource that closes the gap between classroom theory and what a pastor actually experiences in his weekly sermon preparation.

Power in Weakness: Paul's Transformed Vision for Ministry
by Timothy G. GombisEnvisioning cruciform community built on resurrection hope After Paul&’s encounter with the risen Christ on the road to Damascus, he turned from coercion and violence to a ministry centered on the hope of Christ&’s resurrection. In earthly terms, Paul had traded power for weakness. But—as he explained in his subsequent letters—this &“weakness&” was actually the key to flourishing community that is able to experience God&’s transformation, restoration, and healing. What would it mean for pastors today to take seriously Paul&’s exhortation in 1 Corinthians 11:1 to &“imitate me as I imitate Christ&” and lead their congregations in this way? Instead of drawing leadership principles and practices from the worlds of business, education, and politics—which tend to orient churches around institutional power and image maintenance—Timothy Gombis follows Paul in resisting the influence of the &“present evil age&” by making cruciformity the operating principle of the church. Gombis guides the reader through practices and patterns that can lead a congregation past a focus on individual salvation, toward becoming instead a site of resurrection power on earth.

Power Moves Study Guide: What the Bible Says About How You Can Reclaim and Redefine Your God-Given Power
by Sarah Jakes RobertsIn the Power Moves Study Guide, Sarah Jakes Roberts shares what the Bible says about how followers of Jesus can reclaim and redefine their God-given power. God's original intention for humankind was for them to subdue the earth and have dominion over it. He instructed Adam and Eve to "rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground" (Genesis 1:28). But the first humans allowed the enemy to talk them into giving up this authority and ended up undermining their mission in the world. We have been living with the repercussions ever since. But this is not the way it was supposed to be—and this is not the way it has to be. We do not have to buy into the enemy's lie that we are powerless. We can reclaim the power that God intends for us to have. We can allow His strength to move in us, through us, and work for us so that we can stand against the schemes of the enemy and make a positive impact for God in this world. As Paul wrote, we can "put on the full armor of God" so we can "stand against the devil&’s schemes" (Ephesians 6:10).The Bible states that God created us to be a force in this world. We no longer have to accept that we have no power to change our situation. We can rediscover God's power and allow it to move in us.
