The Second Testament: A New Translation

by Scot McKnight

Experience the New Testament afresh in Scot McKnight's bold translation. Typical translations of the New Testament make the biblical text as accessible as possible by using the language of our own day. At times this masks the distance between the New Testament text and modern readers. Scripture continues to speak to us but it speaks as an ancient text to the modern world. New Testament scholar Scot McKnight offers a translation of the New Testament with a daring approach to the ancient text. Clever in its expression and at times stunning in its boldness, The Second Testament will challenge readers to experience God's Word anew. God blesses the beggars in spirit because theirs is Heavens’ Empire. God blesses the grievers because they will be consoled. God blesses the meek because they will inherit the land. God blesses the ones hungering and thirsting for the rightness because they will be satisfied. (Matthew 5:3-6) Features include: Complete text of the New Testament Brief introductions to each book Maps of key locations and events Glossary of key terms in the translation Full-cloth hardcover with foil stamping

Secondhand Jesus

by Glenn Packiam

God has offered us firsthand knowledge of His love, His grace, and His power. Yet so often, we too easily settle for someone else's descriptions, the Cliff notes from another's spiritual journey. We are content for "God-experts" to do the heavy lifting and then give us the bottom line. And like any secondhand information, after enough times through the grapevine, the truth about God deteriorates and crumbs of rumor are all that remain. But when life derails, and things don't go as we had planned, our thin view of God is challenged. In those critical moments, we can choose to walk away from God, or to let our questions lead us home. When we choose to wrestle with God, to engage Him for ourselves, we-like Jacob and Job and David-will see rumors die and revelation come alive. It's time to hear the magnificent, Divine Invitation. It's time to take God up on His offer and embrace the mystery and majesty of knowing Him for ourselves.

Secrecy: Silence, Power, and Religion (Routledge Handbooks In Religion Ser.)

by Hugh B. Urban

The powers of political secrecy and social spectacle have been taken to surreal extremes recently. Witness the twin terrors of a president who refuses to disclose dealings with foreign powers while the private data of ordinary citizens is stolen and marketed in order to manipulate consumer preferences and voting outcomes. We have become accustomed to thinking about secrecy in political terms and personal privacy terms. In this bracing, new work, Hugh Urban wants us to focus these same powers of observation on the role of secrecy in religion. With Secrecy, Urban investigates several revealing instances of the power of secrecy in religion, including nineteenth-century Scottish Rite Freemasonry, the sexual magic of a Russian-born Parisian mystic; the white supremacist BrüderSchweigen or “Silent Brotherhood” movement of the 1980s, the Five Percenters, and the Church of Scientology. An electrifying read, Secrecy is the culmination of decades of Urban’s reflections on a vexed, ever-present subject.

Secrecy and Esoteric Writing in Kabbalistic Literature (Jewish Culture and Contexts)

by Jonathan Dauber

Secrecy and Esoteric Writing in Kabbalistic Literature examines the strategies of esoteric writing that Kabbalists have used to conceal secrets in their writings, such that casual readers will only understand the surface meaning of their texts while those with greater insight will grasp the internal meaning. In addition to a broad description of esoteric writing throughout the long literary history of Kabbalah, this work analyzes kabbalistic secrecy in light of contemporary theories of secrecy. It also presents case studies of esoteric writing in the work of four of the first kabbalistic authors—Abraham ben David, Isaac the Blind, Ezra ben Solomon, and Asher ben David—and thereby helps recast our understanding of the earliest stages of kabbalistic literary history. The book will interest scholars in Jewish mysticism and Jewish philosophy, as well as those working in medieval Jewish history. Throughout, Jonathan V. Dauber has endeavored to write an accessible work that does not require extensive prior knowledge of kabbalistic thought. Accordingly, it finds points of contact between scholars of various religious traditions.

Secret: 107 Women of the Bible

by Dorothy L. Johnson

Generations past and present have always debated gender role and gender stereotype with much variance. What is paradoxical is that many of the concepts governing women in society do not originate among women. Sad but true, in some cultures the value placed on women is equal to that of a commodity or a product used by consumers. Female bias can be less remuneration than their male counterpart for the same job. Within religious circles, although women and men received the same theological training, women are not recognized in the same manner. As a health professional, personal conversations with thousands of women from around the world revealed one trend. They had little self-worth, were not empowered and others saw them similarly. It must be noted that even historians portray no ancient writing as unique as the bible, whose successful female characters existed within an exclusively male dominant culture when women were excluded from the population statistic of their times (Exodus. 11:37) and (Matt.14:21 and 15:38). Significant changes are occurring in some areas of the world as women struggle for their rights to freedom and equity. While writing this book, British Broadcasting Cooperation (BBC) highlighted areas of breakthrough, the first story women drivers in Saudi Arabia allowed obtaining driver’s license. The second story featured a stewardess on a Turkish Airline taking legal action against the Airline for been paid less than her male counterpart. The third Malala Yousafzai (Noble Peace Prize Winner) who was shot in her head by the Taliban 2012 for campaigning for education among girls was fit to return home after six years. The fourth a major historical land mark; her campaign for women's right to vote during the 19th Century was memorialized in 2018 more than one hundred years later. In her honor Millicent Farcet the first female statue was erected and unveiled in London. Secret: Fame or Failure provides unbiased, biblical solutions, empowering women by positive role models (although not exclusively for women). It features life in the palace and life among ordinary people who did uncommon things. This unique book enhances the knowledge of men and women who have read and studied the bible for many years creating a hunger for cultural, ancestral heritage within scriptures. It is saturated with revelation and teachings linking the lives of the biblical women to women today.

The Secret (Seasons of Grace #1)

by Beverly Lewis

In the seemingly ordinary Amish home of Grace Byler, secrets abound. For instance, why does her mother weep in the night, and why does her father refuse to admit something is dreadfully wrong with his wife and with his marriage? Then, in one startling moment, Grace's mother unexpectedly leaves the family in search of something that will deliver her mother from the deep grief that she feels. With her mother's desertion, everything Grace assumed she knew is shattered. Her mother's disappearance leaves Grace reeling and unable to keep her betrothal promise to her long-time boyfriend. Left to pick up the pieces of her life, Grace questions all she has been taught about love, family, and commitment. Similarly, the other members of the family attempt to deal with their sense of abandonment and their feelings of betrayal. Finally, the larger community also tries to make sense of this irreproachable action. At the same time, Heather Nelson, an non-Amish, graduate student is plagued by a doctor's diagnosis of terminal cancer. In her denial and telling no one she is terminally ill, Heather travels to Lancaster County hoping to find the peace and rest that she desires. Lancaster is the last place she and her now deceased mother had visited together. Will Heather find healing for body and spirit? In this first book of the Season of Grace series, the lives of the wounded characters begin to weave together like an Amish patchwork quilt. They each discover missing pieces of their life puzzles and glimpse the gracious hand of a loving God who moves the characters toward spiritual wholeness. At the end of the novel, many questions are left unanswered leaving the reader ready to read the next novel in the series to finish his or her own patchwork quilt. Through this novel, the reader becomes acquainted with the community, culture, and personal dimensions of Amish life. The non-Amish reader becomes enthralled in the story as he or she travels to a different realm of existence. The reader learns to appreciate this often misunderstood culture.

Secret Anniversaries of the Heart

by Lev Raphael

"The power of Raphael's stories comes from his passion for telling the truth, however painful."--Hadassah Magazine"His characters are voices of reason, observers rather than judges. The prose is poetic, the sex scenes sweat with passion."--Los Angeles TimesWhen Lev Raphael published the controversial story collection Dancing on Tisha B'av, he broke new ground in the publishing world. Never before in one book had an American writer dealt with the conflicts between homosexuality and traditional Judaism, linked the chilling mind diseases of antisemitism and homophobia, and borne witness not only to the legacy of Holocaust survivors but the suffering and conflicts of their children. Winner of the prestigious Lambda Literary Award, Raphael opened the door to a new kind of American Jewish fiction.Secret Anniversaries of the Heart unites the best stories from Dancing on Tisha B'av with 12 new stories, including one never before published. Here we encounter tales of antisemitism on the college campus, of self-hatred and body obsession, and of survivor parents whose only response to the Holocaust is to isolate themselves, unconsciously committing a kind of emotional suicide. In a collection that encompasses over 25 years of his award-winning stories, Lev Raphael proves himself a visionary like James Baldwin and shares Anita Brookner's gift for dramatizing the pain of seemingly quiet lives in stories that are both passionate and precise.Lev Raphael is the author of 17 books published in a dozen languages. A winner of the Lambda Literary Award, among many prizes, his short works have appeared in numerous anthologies, including the star-packed Who We Are: On Being (and Not Being) A Jewish American Writer (Schocken/Random House). The author of a popular mystery series, he performs all over the country and hosts a weekly book show on NPR.
