What Good Is God? In Search of a Faith That Matters: In Search of a Faith That Matters
by Philip YanceyJournalist and spiritual seeker Philip Yancey has always struggled with the most basic questions of the Christian faith. The question he tackles in WHAT GOOD IS GOD? concerns the practical value of belief in God. His search for the answer to this question took him to some amazing settings around the world: Mumbai, India when the firing started during the terrorist attacks; at the motel where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated; on the Virginia Tech campus soon after the massacre; an AA convention; and even to a conference for women in prostitution. At each of the 10 places he visited, his preparation for the visit and exactly what he said to the people he met each provided evidence that faith really does work when what we believe is severely tested. WHAT GOOD IS GOD? tells the story of Philips journey--the background, the preparation, the presentations themselves. Here is a story of grace for armchair travelers, spiritual seekers, and those in desperate need of assurance that their faith really matters.

What Happened at Vatican II
by John W. O'MalleyDuring Four Years in Session, Vatican Council II held television audiences rapt with its elegant, magnificently choreographed public ceremonies, while its debates generated front-page news on a near-weekly basis. By virtually any assessment, it was the most important religious event of the twentieth century, with repercussions that reached far beyond the Catholic church. Remarkably enough, this is the first book, solidly based on official documentation, to give a brief, readable account of the council from the moment Pope John XXIII announced it on January 25, 1959, until its conclusion on December 8, 1965. Book jacket.

What Happened in the Garden: The Reality And Ramifications Of The Creation And Fall Of Man
by Abner ChouEvangelicals are no strangers to the creation versus evolution debate. Now the argument has spread beyond the contents of the creation account and into Genesis 2–3, with speculation about the historicity of Adam, and the fall. But does it matter which position one holds? Is anything really at stake? The faculty of The Master's College come together to contend that the second and third chapters of Genesis are indeed historical, that there are excellent reasons for believing so, and that it is an essential issue within Christian thought and life. The contents of these chapters establish the history of how everything in the world came to be what it is today. This Scripture passage—-Genesis 3 especially—-explains what we observe in the legal system, literature, gender roles, education, psychology, and science. Far from irrelevant, the theology and historicity of Genesis are in fact critical to our everyday lives. What Happened in the Garden? includes new scientific, literary, business, educational, and legal perspectives on creation. Through this multidisciplinary look at the debate, the contributors prove that to change our understanding of the fall is to change the way we understand reality, to revise the Christian worldview, and to reshape the faith itself.

What Happens in Mindfulness: Inner Awakening and Embodied Cognition
by John TeasdaleWell known for applying mindfulness to the treatment of depression, pioneering researcher John Teasdale now explores the broader changes that people can experience through contemplative practices. What goes on in our minds when we are mindful? What does it mean to talk of mindfulness as a way of being? From a scientific perspective, how do core elements of contemplative traditions have their beneficial effects? Teasdale describes two types of knowing that human beings have evolved--conceptual and holistic–intuitive--and shows how mindfulness can achieve a healthier balance between them. He masterfully describes the mechanisms by which this shift in consciousness not only can reduce emotional suffering, but also can lead to greater joy and compassion and a transformed sense of self.

You didn't feel scared, you felt comforted and you knew that the energy felt familiar, like that of a passed loved one. But your sceptical mind told you it was just your imagination. Signs from the spirit world come in many different ways; it could be just a small thing, such as sensing a presence or even the lights flicking on and off whenever you think about a passed loved one. Drawing on her many years of communicating with the spirit world Jade-Sky's sympathetic answers offer comfort and reassurance to anyone who wonders: 'What happens next?'
What Happens Next Bible Study Guide plus Streaming Video: A Traveler’s Guide through the End of This Age
by Max LucadoWhat comes to mind when you think about the end times? If you are like many Christians, you might not think about it much at all. You have a carpe diem kind of faith that focuses on the here and now. Why occupy your thoughts with the "not yet" when you have enough to deal with in the "right now"? The answer is simple: because Jesus focused on the end times. A full thirty percent of his teachings in the Gospels have to do with discourses on heaven, hell, and the events that will signal the final age. So, if Jesus made the end times a priority, it only makes sense that his followers would make it a priority as well.Perhaps one of the reasons why you don't like to think about the end times is because you know it will involve turmoil and strife. Indeed, Jesus said the final days would be marked by events that include economic turmoil, political conflicts, ethnic tensions, persecution of Christians, famines, wars and rumors of wars, diseases, false prophets, waning faith in Jesus, and other fearful sights. Jesus declared, "All these are the beginning of birth pains" (Matthew 24:9). Labor pains increase in frequency and intensity as the delivery draws near. Jesus was speaking of a day in which the same will happen in the world. Now, when it comes to considering these events that will signal the end of the age, you have a choice as to how you will respond. You can see these circumstances through the eyes of fear or faith. The eyes of fear see little reason for hope and ample reason for anxiety. However, the eyes of faith see history inching closer and closer to a new era that will usher in a heavenly destiny—a time when you will "reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize" (Philippians 3:14 nlt). God has told you what to expect not to scare you but to prepare you. He is like a pilot on the intercom telling the passengers about impending turbulence. A good pilot keeps his travelers informed. Your good Father does the same!God wants you to have a deep-seated confidence that he is firmly on his throne and the future is in his hands. He has given prophecy to empower his saints with the reassurance that whatever happens in this life, he is ultimately sovereign.

What Happens When We Practice Religion?: Textures of Devotion in Everyday Life
by Robert WuthnowAn exploration of the interdisciplinary methods used to understand religious practiceReligion is commonly viewed as something that people practice, whether in the presence of others or alone. But what do we mean exactly by "practice"? What approaches help to answer this question? What Happens When We Practice Religion? delves into the central concepts, arguments, and tools used to understand religion today.Throughout the past few decades, the study of religion has shifted away from essentialist arguments that grandly purport to explain what religion is and why it exists. Instead, using methods from anthropology, psychology, religious studies, and sociology, scholars now focus on what people do and say: their daily religious habits, routines, improvisations, and adaptations. Robert Wuthnow shows how four intersecting areas of inquiry—situations, intentions, feelings, and bodies—shed important light on religious practice, and he explores such topics as the role of religious experiences in sacred spaces, gendered social relationships, educational settings, the arts, meditation, and ritual.Suitable for undergraduate and graduate courses, What Happens When We Practice Religion? provides insights into the diverse ways that religion manifests in ordinary life.Summarizes the latest theories and empirical methods of religious practiceShows how the study of religion has changedIncludes chapters on theory, situations, intentions, feelings, and bodiesDraws from anthropology, psychology, religious studies, and sociologyAccessible for undergraduate and graduate courses
What Has No Place, Remains: The Challenges for Indigenous Religious Freedom in Canada Today
by Nicholas ShrubsoleThe desire to erase the religions of Indigenous Peoples is an ideological fixture of the colonial project that marked the first century of Canada’s nationhood. While the ban on certain Indigenous religious practices was lifted after the Second World War, it was not until 1982 that Canada recognized Aboriginal rights, constitutionally protecting the diverse cultures of Indigenous Peoples. As former prime minister Stephen Harper stated in Canada’s apology for Indian residential schools, the desire to destroy Indigenous cultures, including religions, has no place in Canada today. And yet Indigenous religions continue to remain under threat. Framed through a postcolonial lens, What Has No Place, Remains analyses state actions, responses, and decisions on matters of Indigenous religious freedom. The book is particularly concerned with legal cases, such as Ktunaxa Nation v. British Columbia (2017), but also draws on political negotiations, such as those at Voisey’s Bay, and standoffs, such as the one at Gustafsen Lake, to generate a more comprehensive picture of the challenges for Indigenous religious freedom beyond Canada’s courts. With particular attention to cosmologically significant space, this book provides the first comprehensive assessment of the conceptual, cultural, political, social, and legal reasons why religious freedom for Indigenous Peoples is currently an impossibility in Canada.
