The Ulama in Contemporary Islam: Custodians of Change (Princeton Studies in Muslim Politics #38)

by Muhammad Qasim Zaman

From the cleric-led Iranian revolution to the rise of the Taliban in Afghanistan, many people have been surprised by what they see as the modern reemergence of an antimodern phenomenon. This book helps account for the increasingly visible public role of traditionally educated Muslim religious scholars (the `ulama) across contemporary Muslim societies. Muhammad Qasim Zaman describes the transformations the centuries-old culture and tradition of the `ulama have undergone in the modern era--transformations that underlie the new religious and political activism of these scholars. In doing so, it provides a new foundation for the comparative study of Islam, politics, and religious change in the contemporary world. While focusing primarily on Pakistan, Zaman takes a broad approach that considers the Taliban and the `ulama of Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, India, and the southern Philippines. He shows how their religious and political discourses have evolved in often unexpected but mutually reinforcing ways to redefine and enlarge the roles the `ulama play in society. Their discourses are informed by a longstanding religious tradition, of which they see themselves as the custodians. But these discourses are equally shaped by--and contribute in significant ways to--contemporary debates in the Muslim public sphere. This book offers the first sustained comparative perspective on the `ulama and their increasingly crucial religious and political activism. It shows how issues of religious authority are debated in contemporary Islam, how Islamic law and tradition are continuously negotiated in a rapidly changing world, and how the `ulama both react to and shape larger Islamic social trends. Introducing previously unexamined facets of religious and political thought in modern Islam, it clarifies the complex processes of religious change unfolding in the contemporary Muslim world and goes a long way toward explaining their vast social and political ramifications.

The 'Ulama in Contemporary Pakistan: Contesting and Cultivating an Islamic Republic

by Mashal Saif

In this book, Mashal Saif explores how contemporary 'ulama, the guardians of religious knowledge and law, engage with the world's first and most populated Islamic nation-state: Pakistan. In mapping these engagements, she weds rich ethnography with rigorous textual analysis and offers insight into some of the most significant and politically charged issues in recent Pakistani history. These include debates over the rights of women; the country's notorious blasphemy laws; the legitimacy of religiously mandated insurrection against the state; sectarian violence; and the place of Shi'as within the Sunni majority nation. These diverse case studies are knit together by the project's most significant contribution: a theoretical framework that understands the 'ulama's complex engagements with their state as a process of both contestation and cultivation of the Islamic Republic by citizen-subjects. This framework provides a new way of assessing state-'ulama relations not only in contemporary Pakistan but also across the Muslim world.

La última cruzada del Papa (The Pope's Last Crusade - Spanish Edition) (The Pope's Last Crusade - Spanish Edition): Cómo un jesuita estadounidense ayudó al

by Peter Eisner

by Casey Diaz

by Lita Donoso

by Marcus J. Borg

by Rev James Martin

«Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo»… «Ahí tienes a tu madre». «Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?».

The Ultimate: Your Self Revealed

by Marie S. Watts

What is the Ultimate? At first glance the title to this book, The Ultimate, may seem to present a challenge, or it could appear presumptuous. However, the answer to the above question will disclose that neither of these attitudes is implied. The Ultimate is that glorious point in revelation where the long struggle for Spiritual understanding is ended, where ever-present perfection is realized to be the entirety of the Life, Soul, Being, and Body of the seeker. Of course this does not mean that all revelation has come to an end. Rather it is from this point that the Truth reveals Itself from within in ever-increasing Light and clarity. Here you stand in the Light as the Light; and the Light is Consciousness, YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS.In the Ultimate there is no dualism. Here there is conscious awareness that God is in the Universe as the Universe. God is recognized to be the Life, Mind, Soul, Substance, and Body of all that has existence. This infinite Self-containment includes YOU, your entire Life, Mind, Soul, Substance, Being, Body, and Experience.

Through its strong personal effect upon the reader, each individual becomes aware of his responsibility for the situation and why it is necessary for him to contribute to its solution.Ringing with sincerity, the author's message extracts the very essence, the basic moral core that units all religions and reveals the identical ethics at the heart of all of them. This is no theoretical treatise on ethics, nor does it advocate any cult or creed. Based on a study of comparative religion, it brings into common focus, with burning brightness, the rays of light that emanate from all religions. The result is a central core of truth that shows not only how to prevent annihilation, but even more important, HOW TO LIVE.
