El protagonista -a lo mejor tendríamos que decir con mayor propiedad «los protagonistas» puesto que de algún modo se trata de toda una generación- de esta novela tienen, literalmente, «hormigas en los pantalones» No en el sentido de inquietud que se da a la expresión en el inglés de América, ants in their pants, o tal vez no solo en ese sentido, puesto que los jóvenes de los años sesenta, los que vivieron la primera llegada de turistas, sentían la inquietud anímica de ver abrirse ante ellos un mundo nuevo -algo que la gente llamaba Democracia- y el ansia puramente sexual de descubrir la carne del sexo opuesto libre de los gravámenes de la penitencia religiosa en que fueron criados. Resultado: ¿quién sabe? A lo mejor tendríamos que buscar las consecuencias en la relajación de los tiempos posteriores. Pero los jóvenes de los años sesenta y primeros setenta -y Mark Hale, el protagonista, entre ellos- podrían calificarse muy bien de «nuevos románticos». Todos ellos, después de las veleidades de la primera juventud, encontraron el amor romántico y fundaron familias tan estables como lo habían sido las de sus progenitores. Tal vez incluso más sinceras, porque habían conocido de cerca la tentación de lo prohibido. Esta novela rehúye regodearse en lo sexual, lo trata con gran finura literaria y con un vocabulario muy adecuado a la época que describe; intenta retratar un trozo de vida en el que también inciden las fantasías, pero como dirían los jóvenes de entonces, y a lo mejor incluso los de ahora, «sin pasarse». Lo que queda asegurado es el buen sabor de boca que dejará a los amantes de la lectura.
