by Laura Kinsale

The complete medieval romance series by a New York Times–bestselling author who &“creates magic&” (Lisa Kleypas). In this pair of unforgettable romances set in fourteenth-century Europe, the New York Times–bestselling author and RITA Award winner once again proves &“no one—repeat no one—writes historical romance better than Laura Kinsale&” (Mary Jo Putney, New York Times–bestselling author). Special to these ebook editions, each novel is presented in two versions, the first re-creating Middle English dialogue with deep period detail, the second reworked by the author to be a tighter read, with more modern words for dialogue. Whichever you decide to read, you&’ll come away agreeing with New York Times–bestselling author Julia Quinn: &“Laura Kinsale&’s work is unfailingly brilliant and beautiful.&” For My Lady&’s Heart: With Princess Melanthe di Monteverde widowed, a political marriage would tip the balance of power to any kingdom that possessed her. Determined to return to England alive and unwed, she hides behind a mask of witchery. Shadowheart: As the last unmarried princess of Monteverde, Elayne is trapped when her hand is promised to the land&’s ruler. Medieval Lays and Legends of Marie de France

by Eugene Mason Marie De France

An artful storyteller whose tales continue to enthrall modern readers, the12th-century poet known as Marie de France transformed folklore and legends into a distinctive variety of romance. Knights, fairies, princes in disguise, and werewolves populate her captivating variations on Arthurian myths and other stories of magic and mystery. Many of her tales are rooted in Celtic and Breton traditions; seven centuries later, her rhythmic and colored language retains its charm and offers insights into medieval customs and philosophy. In addition, this volume features two famous medieval romances, "A Story of Beyond the Sea" and "The Chatelaine of Vergi."

Medieval Misogyny and the Invention of Western Romantic Love

by Bloch R. Howard

Until now the advent of Western romantic love has been seen as a liberation from-or antidote to-ten centuries of misogyny. In this major contribution to gender studies, R. Howard Bloch demonstrates how similar the ubiquitous antifeminism of medieval times and the romantic idealization of woman actually are. Through analyses of a broad range of patristic and medieval texts, Bloch explores the Christian construction of gender in which the flesh is feminized, the feminine is aestheticized, and aesthetics are condemned in theological terms. Tracing the underlying theme of virginity from the Church Fathers to the courtly poets, Bloch establishes the continuity between early Christian antifeminism and the idealization of woman that emerged in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In conclusion he explains the likely social, economic, and legal causes for the seeming inversion of the terms of misogyny into those of an idealizing tradition of love that exists alongside its earlier avatar until the current era. This startling study will be of great value to students of medieval literature as well as to historians of culture and gender.

Medieval Studies and the Ghost Stories of M. R. James (G - Reference, Information and Interdisciplinary Subjects)

by Patrick J. Murphy

Montague Rhodes James authored some of the most highly regarded ghost stories of all time—classics such as “Oh, Whistle, and I’ll Come to You, My Lad” that have been adapted many times over for radio and television and have never gone out of print. But while James is best known as a fiction writer and storyteller, he was also a provost of King’s College, Cambridge, and Eton College, and a legendary and influential scholar whose pioneering work in the study of biblical texts and medieval manuscripts, art, and architecture is still relevant today. In Medieval Studies and the Ghost Stories of M. R. James, Patrick J. Murphy argues that these twin careers are inextricably linked. James’s research not only informed his fiction but also reflected his anxieties about the nature of academic life and explored the delicate divide between professional, university men and erratic hobbyists or antiquaries. Murphy shows how detailed attention to the scholarly inspirations behind James’s fiction provides considerable insight into a formative moment in medieval studies, as well as into James’s methods as a master stylist of understated horror.During his life, James often claimed that his stories were mere entertainments—pleasing distractions from a life largely defined by academic discipline and restraint—and readers over the years have been content to take him at his word. This intriguing volume, however, convincingly proves otherwise.
