The Postcolonial Intellectual: Ngugi wa Thiong’o in Context

by Oliver Lovesey

Addressing a neglected dimension in postcolonial scholarship, Oliver Lovesey examines the figure of the postcolonial intellectual as repeatedly evoked by the fabled troika of Said, Spivak, and Bhabha and by members of the pan-African diaspora such as Cabral, Fanon, and James. Lovesey’s primary focus is NgÅ©gÄ© wa Thiong’o, one of the greatest writers of post-independence Africa. NgÅ©gÄ© continues to be a vibrant cultural agitator and innovator who, in contrast to many other public intellectuals, has participated directly in grassroots cultural renewal, enduring imprisonment and exile as a consequence of his engagement in political action. Lovesey’s comprehensive study concentrates on NgÅ©gÄ©’s non-fictional prose writings, including his largely overlooked early journalism and his most recent autobiographical and theoretical work. He offers a postcolonial critique that acknowledges NgÅ©gÄ©’s complex position as a virtual spokesperson for the oppressed and global conscience who now speaks from a location of privilege. NgÅ©gÄ©’s writings, Lovesey shows, display a seemingly paradoxical consistency in their concerns over nearly five decades at the same time that there have been enormous transformations in his ideology and a shift in his focus from Africa’s holocaust to Africa’s renaissance. Lovesey argues that NgÅ©gÄ©’s view of the intellectual has shifted from an alienated, nearly neocolonial stance to a position that allows him to celebrate intellectual activism and a return to the model of the oral vernacular intellectual even as he challenges other global intellectuals. Tracing the development of this notion of the postcolonial intellectual, Lovesey argues for NgÅ©gÄ©’s rightful position as a major postcolonial theorist who helped establish postcolonial studies.

The Poughkeepsie Brotherhood Box Set

by Debra Anastasia

Now get all four of the Poughkeepsie books in one place. From Poughkeepsie Begins to Saving Poughkeepsie you'll fall in love with the story of three brothers and their love for the women in their lives, and each other. Poughkeepsie Begins - It ends with the beginning. This legendary, indie, cult-favorite series ends its tale with the story of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood before the tattoo. Before the train station, before the church, before a criminal empire, there was a foster home and three teen boys who weren't related by blood. But damn if they aren't closer than most blood families by their choice. Still in high school, Beckett is already laying the groundwork for a grander life ahead, one where his brothers want for nothing and get some respect for once. But even as he plans, Beckett must decide if he's ready to make that choice-diving into a life that trades his chance at a future, his chance at something as simple as first love with a girl named Candy Cox, for the chance for his brothers to find happiness. Blake, Beckett, and Cole's devotion to each other is forged by fists and the driving need to belong somewhere, to do more than just survive this life. Readers of the series know they each get there in the end, but before we count smiles, we must first shed tears. These early days of the Poughkeepsie brotherhood will play on your heartstrings before serrating them with a knife; they'll lift your soul with music, only to leave you with nothing but a desperate prayer for hope. And when you reach the end of the beginning, you'll be ready to start the series all over again. Poughkeepsie - He counts her smiles every day and night at the train station. And morning and evening, the beautiful commuter acknowledges him - just like she does everyone else on the platform. But Blake Hartt is not like the others...he's homeless. Memories of a broken childhood have robbed him of peace and twisted delusions into his soul. He stays secluded from the sun, sure the world would run from him in the harsh light of day. Each day, Livia McHugh smiles politely and acknowledges her fellow commuters as she waits for the train to the city. She dismisses this kindness as nothing special, just like her. She's the same as a million other girls - certainly no one to be cherished. But special or not, she smiles every day, never imagining that someone would rely on the simple gesture as if it were air to breathe. When the moment comes that Livia must do more than smile, without hesitation she steps into the fray to defend the homeless man. And she's surprised to discover an inexplicable connection with her new friend. After danger subsides, their smiles become conversation. Their words usher in a friendship, which awakens something in each of them. But it's not long before their bond must prove its strength. Entanglements from the past challenge both their love and their lives. Blake's heart beats for Livia's, even if her hands have to keep its rhythm. Love is patient. Love is kind. Love never fails. Love never fails, right? In an interwoven tale of unlikely loves and relationships forged by fire, Debra Anastasia takes readers into the darkest corners of human existence, only to show them the radiant power of pure adoration and true sacrifice. Complicated families and confused souls find their way to light in this novel, which manages to be racy, profane, funny, and reverent all at once. Return to Poughkeepsie - Beckett Taylor is a murderer. His calling, his craft are destruction and intimidation--whether he wants it that way now or not. He left Poughkeepsie to keep his brothers safe, to keep Eve safe. Set up with happy lives to live, they're better off without him, right? But all his willpower crumbles when he hears his brother Blake's frantic voice on the phone. An unknown enemy has moved in on his old territory, and Livia's been taken. In an instant, Beckett knows it will take an attack only he and Eve can execute to bring her back. All his self-imposed embargoes are torn to shreds, perhaps along with the new man he's struggled to become....

The PowerBook

by Jeanette Winterson

With the same attention to the intricacies of love and language that has distinguished her body of work so far, Jeanette Winterson's The PowerBook unleashes a swirling narrative that uses timeless tales of passion as a springboard for a meditation on love and desire in the age of the Internet. Ali writes stories on e-mail for anyone who wants them. And while she promises freedom from who you are-"freedom just for one night"-she does not do so without a warning: the story might change you. Ask for an epic love story and you will get one, but Ali will be cast in it, too, and the lines between the real and the imagined may blur. Plucking characters from history and myth, as well as her imagination, Ali journeys through time and makes stops in London, Paris, and Capri, all the while weaving stories that question the boundaries of cyberspace, the human heart, and the novel. In The PowerBook Winterson has found a brilliant conceit through which to showcase her increasingly bold, and utterly unique, voice. From the Book Jacket
