Hospital of the Transfiguration (The\mit Press Ser.)

by Stanislaw Lem

An early realist novel by Stanisław Lem, taking place in a Polish psychiatric hospital during World War II.Taking place within the confines of a psychiatric hospital, Stanisław Lem's The Hospital of the Transfiguration tells the story of a young doctor working in a Polish asylum during World War II. At first the asylum seems like a bucolic refuge, but a series of sinister encounters and incidents reveal an underlying brutality. The doctor begins to seek relief in the strange conversation of the poet Sekulowski, who is posing as a patient in a bid for safety from the occupying German forces. Meanwhile, Resistance fighters stockpile weapons in the surrounding woods. A very early work by Lem, The Hospital of the Transfiguration is partly autobiographical, drawing on the author's experiences as a medical student. Written in 1948, it was suppressed by Polish censors and not published until 1955. The censorship of this realist novel is partly what led Lem to focus on science fiction and nonfiction for the rest of his career.

The Hosts

by Pedro Pujante James Fields

It is a science fiction and fantasy novel, with lots of humor, irony and touches of nonsense. A somewhat odd and mediocre writer is surprised to receive an invitation to a 'Congress on Secret Literature', that will take place in a small and remote village in Extremadura, called Higueras. It is all wrapped in a strange mystery, and the information he receives on the subject is scarce and rather confusing. But since he has nothing better to do but get bored, he decides to participate in it. The picturesque and peaceful village of Higueras - after a strange journey of which little remembers - is exceptionally empty, fictitious and spectral. Only three other writers - Rocío, Román and Raúl - have attended this phantom and'secret' symposium. There, they are greeted by a strange character named Doctor Faustino. But the literary symposium will soon reveal itself as a farce and an excuse to keep them in the strange place. On what grounds? Are they really where they think they are? Do they live in the present or have they been moved to a remote, post-apocalyptic future? Is Higueras a village in Extremadura or a huge fiction? Is Faustino who he says he is? What are those strange noises? Why did you try to clone the illustrious writer Francisco Umbral? This novel is a journey back in time - we don't quite know when - in which a small town could be inhabited by clones with powers, grotesque TV presenters and creepy monsters.

After fifteen years of separation, Jack is contacted by his long-lost sister, Kate, to help her track down the source of her girlfriend Jeanette's sudden trance-like behavior. Referred by a mysterious stranger who gives only Jack's name and phone number, Kate is shocked to find out that the "repairman" she seeks is none other than her little brother-and not altogether happy to find out what little "Jackie" has been doing with himself for all these years. With Jack leading the way, Kate finds out that Jeannette's behavior can be traced back to the experimental therapy she underwent for a brain tumor: now Jeannette's brain and those of several other subjects are infected by a mutated virus. Like any good virus, it wants to multiply-and if Jack can't stop the virus in its path, there will be deadly results. Meanwhile, Jack is traveling on the 9 train when suddenly a passenger goes berserk and starts shooting at random-leaving Jack no choice but to throw himself into the spotlight by putting the shooter down. Worse for Jack, one of his fellow passengers is a reporter for the local tabloid, The Light , who sees Jack's heroism as his ticket to journalistic stardom.
